Early life and education

Jason Dy was born in Cebu City, Philippines, on June 19, 1990, but his parents raised him in Butuan City. His parents divorced in 2003; they were given an annulment in 2014. Jason lived with his mother until she had to leave Singapore to seek jobs. He completed primary education at Enfant Cheri Study Centre Butuan City, high school at Father Saturnino Urios University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music at Philippine Women's University.

Dy started working as a "haranista" to help himself. In several places of their boyfriends or suitors, he serenades women. He also recorded demo tracks, including the original soundtrack of Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Mo?, which was re-recorded by Xian Lim for his XL2 album, as well as Sam Concepcion and Daniel Padilla's "Na Ang Lahat" and "Na Yo Na Ang Lahat." He also posted covers on YouTube and wrote an original song titled "2 Have U" (also posted on YouTube).

Dy performed Sam Smith's "Stay with Me" during ABS-CBN's second season auditions, which aired on November 9, 2014. Sarah Geronimo, Lea Salonga, and Apl.de.ap all voted for him, saying that he was able to bring out the song's emotion by his falsetto skills. Even if Bamboo Maalac did not turn out for him, Maalac expressed that it was "amazing display" on the island. Dy eventually decided on Geronimo as his mentor, as she felt she would be able to support him in his music career.

Dy defeated Monique Lualhati in the two-part semi-finals stage live at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila. He received both the highest votes earned by his instructor and the viewers' text votes, totaling 60.1 percent of the total votes. During the first set of the finals night, he performed "Wrecking Ball" and later performed "With You" for his solo appearance. Both musicians were lauded by the coaches. "You have grown so much in this sport, it's amazing work," Apl.de.ap said. I've seen you dance and do all sorts of things. Congratulations on your job."

Dye had a second round of the finale alongside Alisah Bonaobra after receiving one of the public's two highest votes. He defeated Bonaobra in the first round, winning 52.9 percent of the text vote, not including the first round's votes. Among other items, he was proclaimed the champion at the end of the competition, winning 2 million pesos, a house and lot from Camella Homes, as well as a recording and managing deal with MCA Music.
