This Opening Ceremony was chaotic and surreal but forget the critics - not even the torrential downpour could douse the joy of the return of the Olympics, writes OLIVER HOLT

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 26, 2024
OLIVER HOLT - CHIEF SPORTS WRITER IN PARIS: The boats that carried the Olympians along the River Seine through the torrential rain and the dark of night were festooned with strings of lights that made them look like chariots of fire. They sailed in a great flotilla of speedboats, water taxis and barges, past cardboard cut-outs of Madame Pompadour half-submerged in the river's dark waters. They sailed beneath bridges thronged with acrobats and dancers and past guitarists high on balconies as if they had been transported here from the set of Mad Max: Fury Road. The rain fell more and more heavily and drenched the pianist in his sequinned shirt as he sat at his grand piano on the Pont Royal and soaked the severed head of Marie Antoinette at a window overlooking the river. With every chaotic minute of it, the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics felt more and more like a movie made by Alain Resnais, Jean Cocteau or another of the great French surrealists.

Rashford hit that mark in Ten Hag's first season but dropped to eight last term after signing a new £300,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford. I ditched my London life for a madcap journey to the Hebrides with a rock band... and ended up living the dream as a bona-fide lady of the isles

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 26, 2024
The invitation which landed on the producer's desk at the BBC radio show, Steve Wright in the Afternoon, was as intriguing as it was cryptic. 'The KLF require your presence at a celebratory event to mark the summer solstice. You will be met at a location to be announced and transported to the lost continent of Mu.' It was the summer of 1991, and the esoteric nature of the summons was typical of the KLF. Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty were the world's biggest-selling pop group, with a reputation for elaborate, headline-grabbing stunts. Claire Pattenden, then a personal assistant at the Radio One show, was told to pack for the three-day trip. The 22 year-old, from a deprived corner of south London , had 'barely travelled north of Watford', so wherever 'Mu' was, she couldn't wait to get there.

And this week he laid bare his deeply personal motivation as he revealed his heartache over his estranged transgender daughter Vivian (left).

After all, she lives in Paris with her husband of six years while he drifts between a number of homes - and lady friends - in Europe and America. But Johnny Depp's striking depiction of his former partner Vanessa Paradis as The Empress, released for sale last week, is nevertheless a profound expression of his enduring love for her and their complicated relationship.

Andrew Flintoff is being lined up as England's new white-ball coach with former star, 46, set to make return to key cricket role just 18 months after Top Gear horror crash

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 26, 2024
RICHARD GIBSON: Until Friday night, Flintoff had not taken charge of a professional side, but neither had Brendon McCullum overseen a first-class match when Rob Key made him Test coach two years ago - an appointment credited with revitalising England's fortunes. Key also plumped for Matthew Mott soon after he arrived as the ECB's director of men's cricket in the spring of 2022, but has found himself conducting a white-ball review this week following two underwhelming World Cup title defences within the space of eight months. Change now feels inevitable after a team fronted by Mott and captained by Jos Buttler followed up crashing out in the group stages of the 50-over event on the subcontinent last November, with just three wins in nine matches, by losing to eventual winners India in the semi-final of the Twenty20 version in Guyana.

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 26, 2024
Kamala Harris was all smiles when she arrived at Joe Biden 's former Delaware campaign headquarters on Monday. She was there to lift the spirits of blindsided staffers, who after 15 months of toiling to re-elect the president, suddenly found themselves working for her. 'It is my great honor to have Joe's endorsement in this race,' she boasted to cheers from a crowd who were now on her payroll. But as the assembled readily applauded, some must have harbored private concerns. For, behind the recent public self-branding of Harris as a kindly, jovial 'Momala', she has earned a nasty reputation as an alleged 'soul-destroying' workplace 'bully'.
