Early life and career

Lee Gi-kwang was born in Naju, South Korea, on March 30, 1990. Gi-kwang became involved in hip hop and had a particular obsession with several classic hip hop bands. He was inspired by his family to pursue a musical career at first, but he later passed an audition and became a trainee. He was apprenticed under JYP Entertainment for four years before being banned. He was asked by the former president of Cube Entertainment to join the company without auditioning, making him the company's first trainee.

Gi-kwang was selected to debut as a member of Beast, initially identified as B2ST, which stands for "Boys 2 Search the Top," six months after debuting as a soloist.
