Early life and career

Lee Gi-kwang was born in Naju, South Korea, on March 30, 1990. Gi-kwang became involved in hip hop and had a particular obsession with several classic hip hop bands. He was inspired by his family to pursue a musical career at first, but he later passed an audition and became a trainee. He was apprenticed under JYP Entertainment for four years before being banned. He was asked by the former president of Cube Entertainment to join the company without auditioning, making him the company's first trainee.

When he premiered and launched a mini-album First Episode: A New Hero on April 4, 2009, he was known as the solo singer AJ or Ace Junior. On Mnet M.Countdown, he made his debut on April 2, 2009, and he was dubbed the Next Rain in Korea by Korean media. However, he caused controversies when his name was revealed among netizens for having a similar name with Paran's AJ (who later became a U-KISS member). When he re-debuted with Beast, he now goes by his original name. AJ opened Lady Gaga's Korean showcase on June 17, 2009. Yoon Doo-joon, Yong Jun-hyung, Jang Hyun-seung, and Yang Youn-seong were among the backup dancers for AJ before debuting in Beast. AJ appeared on MTV's Diary of AJ, a reality show hosted by MTV. On May 9, 2009, the show ran on two episodes, with a total of two episodes showcasing his early days as AJ.

Career

Gi-kwang was selected to debut as a member of Beast, initially identified as B2ST, which stands for "Boys 2 Search the Top," six months after debuting as a soloist. Their name was also changed to BEAST, which stands for "Boys of East Asia Standing Tall." In October 2009, the company debuted. Gi-kwang appeared in the MBC sitcom High Kick Through the Roof, which aired in 2009 and 2010.

Gi-kwang appeared in K.Will's music video for the song "Present" in 2010. He was also selected as the MC for MBC's Sunday Night segment Hot Brothers and the KBS talk show Win Win. Gi-kwang was selected as the model for DongSuh Foods' 'Ice Tea Tio' in May. Gi-kwang appeared on Ahn Jinkyung's single "Love is Pathetic" from the mini album Be the Voice as a rapper in August. On August 21, 2010, he, Yoon Doojoon, and IU appeared as special hosts on Music Core. Gi-kwang was given the Popularity Award from the 2010 MBC Entertainment Awards on December 29, 2010.

Gi-kwang and IU were selected to be the new MCs of Inkigayo in place of CNBlue's Jung Yonghwa, who had been on leave since March 20, 2011. Both were paired with Jo Kwon of 2AM and Sulli of f(x). In A Pink's music video, "I Don't Know" Sunny Hill's music video for "Midnight Circus", he was also selected as the leading man. Gi-kwang appeared on Brave Brothers' song "Break Up" with Electroboyz in July as part of Brave Brother's sixth project album, which was released on July 12, 2011.

Gi-kwang was cast in the romantic comedy My Princess starring Song Seung-hun and Kim Tae-hee, and she appeared in the drama Me Too, Flower. Gi-kwang received the Best New Actor award at the SBS Drama Awards for his role in My Princess.

Gi-kwang appeared in "Heaven," Ailee's first music video. On November 10, Gi-kwang appeared at a SBS K-Pop Super Concert in America with Tiffany Hwang and Jung Yong-hwa and Melon Music Awards, Infinite's Woohyun, Moon Hee-jun, and Danny Ahn.

Gi-kwang appeared on KBS Drama Special My Friend is Still Alive in 2013 as a terminally ill patient with leukemia. (Twenty Years Old) He appeared in the smartphone drama 20's in 2014.

Gi-kwang was the youngest detective on the team in SBS's drama Mrs. Cop in 2015. In the 2016 MBC drama Monster starring Kang Ji-hwan and the web drama Momin's Room, he appeared as the younger version of his character.

Gi-kwang's debut as a soloist on September's first mini album One was released in September 2017. "What You Like" was the lead single on R&B's "What You Like" the previous R&B single.
