Yoona was introduced to the world through various appearances in music videos and commercials prior to her debut; she appeared in TVXQ's "Magic Castle" music video in December 2004. In August 2007, she made her official debut as a member of Girls' Generation, becoming the organization's "center."

Yoona has appeared in several television dramas apart from Girls' Generation's activities. Her acting career began in 2007 with a small role in MBC's drama Two Outs in the Ninth Inning. She appeared in MBC's Woman of Matchless Beauty (2008) and was praised by veteran actress Bae Jong-ok for her cameo appearance.

Yoona played the role Jang Sae-byuk in KBS' drama You Are My Destiny in May 2008. Yoona's drama attracted viewership of up to 41.5 percent, and the drama attracted greater public attention. She considered the position a turning point in her career, and she received two "Best New Actress" awards at the 2008 KBS Drama Awards and the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards. Yoona and Kwon Sang-woo were cast in MBC's drama Cinderella Man in 2009.

Yoona was cast in a leading role alongside Jang Geun Suk in KBS2's drama Love Rain, a fantasy drama about fate in which the offspring of an ill-fated couple who met in the 1970s meet and fall in love with each other in the modern era. Yoona played two characters: Yun-hee of the 1970s and Ha-na of modern times. Although the drama received poor domestic viewership and was chastised for its inability to connect to the viewers, Yoona's performance received good feedback. "The speed at which her acting is improving is blinding," OSEN's Yoon Ga-ee wrote. She has grown to the point where you ask, 'When did she act so well?' The sarcastic comments that followed her during Cinderella Man are now nowhere to be found." "Yoona is completely immersed in her character, and she has now become 'Hana' herself,' according to Choi In-kyung of Hankook Ilbo. The drama sparked a lot of positive overseas interest and was sold to Japan for $10 million, the second highest price for a KBS drama at the time, owing in large part to Yoona's fame.

Yoona appeared in KBS2's romantic comedy drama Prime Minister & I in December 2013. Yoona played Nam Da-jung, a young and adamant reporter who falls in love with the prime minister while Loosely based on the musical film The Sound of Music. Yoona appeared in her debut Chinese drama God of War, based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The drama's viewership hit a record high of over 2%, which was described as "a huge success" in comparison to China's large population. Yoona's fame in China has also increased to more than ten billion viewers on various online video portals, highlighting the city's fame. Her performance earned positive viewers' praise and earned her critics' ire.

Confidential Assignment, Yoona's first film appearance in January 2017, made her debut in an action film. Yoona's appearance at the Asian Film Awards and the Newcomer Award at the Korean Film Shining Star Awards were both well-received, and she received several accolades, including the AFA Next Generation Award at the Asian Film Awards and the Newcomer Award.
