Choi Soo-young (born February 10, 1990), also known as Sooyoung, is a South Korean singer, actress, and songwriter.

She was a participant of the short-lived Korean-Japanese singing duo Route 0 in Japan in 2002.

Sooyoung came back to South Korea in 2004 and became a member of Girls' Generation, which went on to become one of South Korea's best-selling artists and one of South Korea's most popular girl groups.

Sooyoung has also appeared in several television dramas, including The Third Hospital (2012), Dating Agency: Cyrano (2013), Squad 38 (2016), and Man in the Kitchen (2017–2018). Sooyoung left SM Entertainment in October 2017, but she remains a member of Girls' Generation.

She began with Echo Global Group in 2018 and released her first solo single "Winter Breath" in 2018, before heading to Saram Entertainment in 2019.

Personal life

Sooyoung graduated from JeongShin Women's High School in 2009. She went on to specialize in film studies and graduated from Chung-Ang University in February 2016, receiving a lifetime achievement award at the graduation ceremony. Kwon Yuri, a fellow Girls' Generation student, attended the same university.

Jung Kyung-ho has been dating Sooyoung since 2013.

Life and career

Sooyoung was born in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, South Korea, on February 10, 1990. Choi Soo-jin, the younger sister of a musical theatre actor, appears in this series. Sooyoung was first discovered in fifth grade by a SM Entertainment Open Audition. She debuted in Japan as a member of Route 0. She later won first place at the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition and debuted in Japan as a member of Route 0. Before disbanding in 2003, the pair released three singles before disbanding.

Sooyoung returned to SM Entertainment and debuted in South Korea as a member of the Girls' Generation in August 2007. With the debut of their hit single "Gee" in 2009, the group gained a lot of attention. Sooyoung has said in a chat with her that she was also interested in acting before launching as a performer and that she had failed more than 70 auditions during her pre-debut days.

Sooyoung has participated in a number of musical and acting roles, in addition to Girls' Generation's activities. Her acting career in the beginnings consisted of several small roles and guest appearances, including KBS2's Unstoppable Marriage (2006), romantic comedy film Hello, Schoolgirl (2008), and SBS' drama Oh! My Lady (2010), SBS' Paradise Ranch (2011), and SBS' A Gentleman's Dignity (2012). Tiffany and The Blue, a South Korean duo, recorded two songs, one trot song named "KKok" with Girls' Generation member Yuri for the SBS' drama Working Mom, while the other one, "Feeling Only You," was a collaboration with Girls' Generation member Tiffany and the South Korean duo The Blue.

Sooyoung has dabbled in lyrics writing throughout her career, other than contributing her vocal to Girls' Generation's songs. While co-writing the song "Baby Maybe" (2013), she wrote the lyrics for three songs: "How Great Is Your Love" (2011), "What Do I Do" (2016), and "Sailing (0805)" (2016). She was first recognized actor in tvN's medical drama The Third Hospital in September 2012. Both co-actors Oh Ji Ho and Kim Seung-woo, as well as the viewers, were drawn to her emotional scene due to her natural display of emotion. Sooyoung was cast in TVN's romantic comedy drama in May 2013. Cyrano Dating Agency: Sooyoung. It was a spin-off of the 2010 Cyrano Agency. She worked as a dating specialist for a dating company that supports people in seeking their love. Park Ju-yeon of the Hankook Ilbo lauded Sooyoung for her energetic character role and said that no "overdone emotions often appear in acting newcomers."

Sooyoung played a lead role in MBC's melodrama, My Spring Days, in September 2014. Her character is that of a terminally ill patient who needs a heart transplant, and she meets her donor's husband, played by Kam Woo-sung. Sooyoung received the "Best Actress in a Miniseries" award at the 2014 MBC Drama Awards and the "Excellence Award for Actress" at the 2015 Korea Drama Awards, marking a major achievement for the actress. "Wind Flower" was her contribution to the album's soundtrack. Sooyoung appeared as the female lead in KBS2's special drama Perfect Sense, which was created by Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance in 2015 to help raise public awareness of the disabled. Ah-yeon, a visually impaired teacher, was used by her. Sooyoung appeared in the OCN crime drama Squad 38, alongside Ma Dong-seok and Seo In-guk.

Sooyoung appeared as a television producer in the JTBC's "Some You Might Know" web drama in early August. She appeared in the MBC drama series Man in the Kitchen later in August. Sooyoung joined Echo Global Group in November 2017 after her deal with SM Entertainment came to an end. With a change in name, her future interactions with Girls' Generation remain in question.

Sooyoung appeared in the Korean-Japanese film Memories of a Dead End and the action comedy film Girl Cops in 2018.

Sooyoung performed "Winter Breath," her first song to be announced after she dropped from SM Entertainment, in December 2018, with the song's music video posted online on the same day. To celebrate the single's debut, Sooyoung's official Twitter and YouTube pages were created.

Sooyoung is the founder of Sooyoung, a newly formed company that was not affiliated with Saram Entertainment in May 2019. Sooyoung appeared in the OCN drama Tell Me What You Saw in February 2020.

Sooyoung appeared in JTBC romance drama Run On in 2020. In 2021, she appeared alongside Choi Tae-joon in the Naver TV romantic comedy series So I Married the Anti-fan, based on the manhwa of the same name and appeared in Netflix's original series Move to Heaven.

In 2022, she appeared in If You Wish Upon Me, a KBS2 drama in the role of a nurse at hospice.
