Preeya Kalidas (born 21 June 1980) is a British singer and actress.

She appeared in the soap opera EastEnders as Amira Masood.

Having done so, she returned to singing, with her single "Shimmy" being released in July 2010 off her debut album (I'm Over It) Constant Craving, which is expected to be announced in September 2010.

Early life

Preeya Kalidas was born in Isleworth, India, and was raised in Twickenham, South-West London. Her father is a financial planner, and her mother works for British Airways. She began ballet lessons at the age of three and tap at five. She then studied at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. She has also worked at Songtime Theatre Arts.

In the drama Googleyes, Kalidas appeared for the first time on screen. She continued to act Usha in a short film called Jump Boy, directed by Menhaj Huda and written by Harsha Patel in 1998. Monica appeared in Gurinder Chadha's film Bend It Like Beckham after a string of roles in films and television, including East is East, Bollywood Queen, My Family, and Casualty. In the Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced show Bombay Dreams, written by A.R., she appeared as the female lead Priya. Don Black, Meera Syal, and Rahman are among the many celebrities to have appeared on television. She has appeared in the BBC television series Bodies as Dr. Maya Dutta.

Kalidas was the female lead in a West End revival of Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 2007. She appeared as the narrator in BBC One's Any Dream Will Do talent search series. She appeared in the multi-award-winning Channel 4 miniseries Britz last year. Kalidas appeared in the second series of BBC One's Mistresses in 2009 and joined EastEnders in April as Amira Shah, the woman and later wife of Syed Masood. In January 2010, she decided to leave EastEnders to pursue a pop career. On the 26th of April 2010, her last episode was broadcast. Kalidas announced in July 2011 that she would return to EastEnders in the latter part of 2011. Kalidas appeared on the show in March 2012 but then dropped it in March 2012. Kalidas was announced in September 2012 that it was briefly ended in EastEnders with Marc Elliott and John Partridge's departures, respectively, as Syed Masood and Christian Clarke.

Kalidas appeared in Hotel Babylon as Aisha Chaudhri, the daughter of a wealthy Indian hotelier. She appeared in Ramzi's "Love Is Blind" music video starring Ash King. She appeared in Leanne's ITV comedy drama Mister Eleven in December 2009. Sofia, the wife of protagonist Omar's mother (played by Riz Ahmed), was portrayed in the 2010 Chris Morris feature film Four Lions. On May 7, the film was released.

Kalidas began to pursue a career in music after leaving EastEnders, signing a Universal Records record deal. "Shimmy," her second album, starring Mumzy Stranger, was announced on June 26, 2010. Kalidas appeared on several television shows, including the National Lottery Results and Loose Women in favour of the single. The single has mixed feedback. Ruth Harrison of FemaleFirst said she "loved the single" but wasn't keen on the genre of music.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Kalidas said that her album would be made up of a variety of genres. Bashy, Skepta, Schorcer, Ramzi, and Mumzy Stranger have all confirmed that the album would feature collaborations with Bashy, Skepta, Schorcer, Ramzi, and Mumzy Stranger. Kalidas' collaboration with Skepta, "Cross My Heart," was released in October 2010 as the lead single from Skepta's second studio album, Doin' It Again, but Kalidas insists she was not included on her debut album at the time of publication.

Kalidas will no longer be releasing an album with Universal Records in 2011, owing to poor sales of "Shimmy." Kalidas was named Best Female Act at the UK Asian Music Awards in the same month, where she performed "I Like You" alongside "Shimmy" and "Cross My Heart" alongside "Shimmy" and her collaboration with Skepta. Kalidas signed a new All Around The World contract in July 2011. "It's A Problem" is Kalidas' second single on YouTube in September 2011. The single features vocals from rapper Scorcher, who had previously been speculated not to be on the album. "It's A Problem"'s music video premiered on October 3, 2011. On October 10, the single's digital package was announced, as well as a new song, "Dirty Kissin"; During an interview with Lorraine in November 2011, Kalidas revealed "A Woman Scorn" the album's third single. However, it was never announced. Kalidas later released her third single, "Love Between Us," starring British producer DaVinChe, who appeared on backing vocals.

Kalidas' single "Don't Give Up" was released in March 2014 and was a precursor to the debut of her debut studio album in 2015. "Can't Live Without You" was her first single released in April 2014. Both songs will be released on the album. Beyoncé's track "Blue" has also appeared on various magazines, including Beyoncé's.

In June 2015, Kalidas began playing Pinky in the new West End musical Bend It Like Beckham. Monica was in the role of Monica in the film version. Miss Hedge will appear in Everybody's Talking About Jamie from 19 November, and it will be released in 2019.

Kalidas co-hosted the Brit Asia TV Music Awards with Apache Indian in 2018.
