Jessica Simpson Career

Life and career

Simpson was born in Abilene, Texas, on July 10, 1980. She is Tina Ann Simpson (née Drew), a homemaker, and Joseph Simpson, a psychologist and Baptist youth minister. Simpson's parents married in 1978; they divorced in 2013. Simpson has said she grew up in Dallas and Waco, but her parents now live in McGregor, Texas. Ashlee is Simpson's younger sister. She attended Amelia Middle School for a short time in her early teens, while her father did outreach in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended J. J. Pearce High School in Richardson during her teenage years, but she had to drop out in 1997 as her career took off; a year later, she earned her GED through distance learning at Texas Tech High School. Simpson was brought up in the Christian faith and was given a purity ring by her father when she was twelve years old. Jessica and her family migrated often as a result of her father's work as a minister, though for the most part, they stayed in Texas; however, they did live in the Midwest for a few years.

She began singing in the church choir as a child. When she was eleven, she dreamed of becoming a singer at a church retreat. Simpson auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club at the age of 12, performing "Amazing Grace" and dancing to "Ice Ice Baby" (1990). She progressed through multiple rounds, eventually finishing as a semi-finalist for the show alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake. Simpson said she was getting anxious about her final audition after seeing Aguilera perform, but she wasn't chosen for the show, ultimately. Simpson returned to her church choir after being discovered by the head of a Christian music label later this year. He requested her for an audition and then signed her right away after she performed "I Will Always Love You" (1973) by Dolly Parton. She started working on her debut album with Proclaim Records and touring to promote the album. Jessica's mother revealed that she had to stop touring because the size of her breasts made her breasts too "sexual" for the genre.

Jessica's debut album was unveiled after Proclaim Records went bankrupt; despite this, her grandmother sponsored a limited pressing of the album personally. Simpson received numerous auditions soon after this, as Jessica was sent by several labels and publishers. She eventually attracted Tommy Mottola, who married Mariah Carey and became the head of Columbia Records. "She had a great little look and a positive mood," she said, and that she was something a bit different from Britney and all of them; she could actually sing." Simpson debuted in Orlando, Florida, where she was recording her debut album. Mottola hoped to sell Simpson as a countermeasure to Spears and Aguilera, both of whom had flourished in successful careers focusing on dancing and sexuality. Simpson enlisted her father Joe as her boss while on her debut as a singer; her mother became her stylist. Simpson met 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey and the pair began dating; Lachey said he left the party and told his mother that he would marry Simpson someday.

Simpson began recording on her debut studio album in 1998. In comparison to those of highly successful artists Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Mottola wanted Simpson to embrace an "anti-sex appeal" image when promoting the album. Simpson's appearance would make the image more "relatable" to listeners, thereby assisting in sales. Simpson went on to say that her plans to remain abstinent until marriage as a result of Mottola's decision. On September 28, her debut single, "I Wanna Love You Forever," (1999), was released. The single became a hit in many countries, with the most notable being at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song was given a platinum award by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales over one million copies in the United States. The album had some success in other regions, most notably in several European countries.

Sweet Kisses (1999), Simpson's debut studio album, was released on November 23. In its first week of appearance, the album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, peaking at number 60-five. "Where You Are" (2000), Simpson's boyfriend Nick Lachey was featured on the album to promote the album; "Where You Are" (1996) was the album's second single; Simpson's girlfriend Nick Lachey was included on the track. "I'm in Love With You" (2000) became the album's third and final single, as well as success in countries such as the United States. Sweet Kisses' third single's success, the album's third single, climbed to a new position of number twenty-five on the Billboard 200 in August 2000. The album received a double platinum award from the RIAA in the United States, despite a two-million copies in the United States. Simpson began to promote Sweet Kisses in 2000 with her boyfriend's band, 98 Degrees.

She began recording more "modern" and upbeat songs for the album in 2000 and later on. Simpson took a more mature public image on the album, a move Simpson and her record label made in the hopes of ensuring the success of musicians like Spears. Simpson ended her relationship with Lachey when she was on the record, to rely on furthering her education; however, the two reconciled romantically in September. Simpson said, "I wrote [Sweet Kisses] when I was seventeen years old and I'm twenty-one [this month], so there is four years of growth involved." In April, Simpson performed "Irresistible" (2001) as the lead single from the campaign. Despite being her second top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the single received mainly mixed feedback from critics due to its sexual themes.

In May, Simpson's second studio album, Irresistible (2001), was released. During its first week of release, the album sold 127,000 copies in the United States, debuting at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. Despite the fact that sales of 500,000 copies increased dramatically in the first week over her previous efforts, Irresistible's first week barely matched that of her previous efforts; the RIAA granted the honor in honor of her debut album's gold award. The album's second and final single, "A Little Bit" (2001), hasn't had a lot of success. Simpson joined Destiny's Child and Nelly on the Total Request Live Tour (2001) to raise the bar, as a co-headliner. Simpson added choreography and backup dancers to her shows following the September 11 attacks, and she later departed the tour to begin her own DreamChaser Tour (2001).

Simpson revealed her engagement to Nick Lachey in February 2002, and the two married in Austin, Texas, on October 26. Simpson's third studio album debuted in 2002. Simpson's lead single, "Sweetest Sin" (2004), dealt with the topic of Simpson losing her virginity to Lachey adroitly. The song was unsuccessful at commercial success. Simpson's father suggested that a reality show starring the couple be broadcast on MTV, resulting in the development of Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. Initially, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley's marriage was the subject, but the two grew apart, prompting Simpson and Lachey to replace them. The series, which mainly focused on the couple's marriage and the recording of Simpson's third studio album, premiered on August 19, 2003. Simpson's ostensible "dumb blonde" antics on the show gave the couple a household name and made it a pop culture phenomenon straight away, with Simpson's ostensible "dumb blonde" antics on the show assisting in the creation of the couple's household name. The series was a ratings hit for MTV and aired for three seasons until 2005.

In This Skin (2003), Simpson's third studio album, In This Skin (2003), was released the day after Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica premiered, with the show serving as a marketing tool for the occasion. In this Skin debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200, with 64,000 copies in its first week. The album's opening numbers were the lowest of Simpson's career at the time. This Skin quickly slowed down the chart, with only over 55,000 copies in the United States by December 2003. In October, Simpson released "With You" (2003) as the album's second single. The single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 and debuted at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Mainstream Top 40 chart based on radio airplay. Simpson appeared in the Super Bowl XXVIII halftime show. She recorded new content for a re-release of In This Skin, which was first launched in March 2004. The re-released album helped with album sales; In This Skin, the company's third edition, it sold three million copies in the United States. Both "Take My Breath Away" (2004) and "Angels" (2004) were released as singles from the re-release.

Simpson and Lachey appeared in The Nick and Jessica Variety Hour in April, which featured guest appearances by celebrities such as Jewel and Mr. T, among others. Jessica Simpson Cosmetics by Jessica Simpson cosmetics line, together with Randi Shinder, launched her Jessica Simpson Desserts by Jessica Simpson cosmetics line in the same month; all of the line's items were edible. Simpson embarked on her Reality Tour (2004) through North America, beginning in June; the tour was a financial success and came to an end in October. Simpson and her partner began appearing on The Ashlee Simpson Exhibition, chronicling Jessica's sister's music career at this time. ReJoyce: The Christmas Album (2004), Simpson's fourth studio album, a series of Christmas themed songs, was released on November 23. The album debuted at number fourteen on the Billboard 200, and the RIAA awarded gold for orders over 500,000 copies. Simpson produced a sitcom pilot for ABC in 2004, but the network didn't pick up in 2004. Simpson and Shinder introduced the Dessert Treats edible cosmetics line in February 2005, a continuation of their previous line but with a younger audience in mind. Following a string of lawsuits, both lines were cancelled.

In 2005, Simpson performed "The Spangled Banner" at the Indy 500. Simpson began The Jessica Simpson Collection in 2005, first collaborating with Tarrant Apparel Group to introduce the Princy and JS by Jessica Simpson clothing lines. The company has continued to expand over the years, and in 2014, it was reported that it had earned $1 billion in annual sales. Daisy Duke, the Dukes of Hazzard's film version, made her film debut in 2005. Although film critics generally gave the film poor marks, it took in over $111 million globally. Simpson performed "These Boots Are Made For Walking" (1958) to promote the film; it both samples and shares the name of a Nancy Sinatra song. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of Simpson's most popular singles to date. Simpson was portrayed in the music video for "unraveling" outfits and washing the General Lee car in her bikini. The outrage culminated in the ban of music videos in certain countries. Simpson and Lachey announced their split in November 2005. Simpson filed for divorce in December 2005, citing "irreconcilable inconsistencies" as the reason for the separation. Their divorce was announced around the world and finalized on June 30, 2006. According to reports, she had to pay Lachey $12 million in their divorce since she hadn't signed a pre-nuptial deal before they wed. Simpson referred to Lachey's marriage as her "biggest financial mistake" in a 2015 interview.

Simpson began recording her fifth studio album in 2005. She had left Columbia Records, with whom she had worked since the start of her career, and had signed a new recording deal with Epic Records, March 2006. On the Home Shopping Network in 2006, Simpson and stylist Ken Pavés introduced a range of hair and beauty products. On June 29, Simpson debuts her latest single, "A Public Affair." The song debuted on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and received a gold medal from the RIAA for sales over 500,000 copies in the United States. The single, which was an upbeat breakup song, was released the day before her divorce from Lachey was finalized. The song appeared in the top ten of the iTunes Store at the same time as her sister's album "Invisible" (2006), marking the first time that two siblings appeared in the store's top ten simultaneously.

With first-week sales of 101,000 copies, A Public Affair (2006), her fifth studio album, A Public Affair (2006), debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. The album failed to sell over 500,000 copies in the United States, with In This Skin (2003) securing just over 500,000 copies. The empowerment anthem "I Belong to Me" (2006), the album's second and final single, hasn't had a commercial success. Simpson appeared in the comedy film Employee of the Month (2006), which was released in October. Dane Cook and Dax Shepard performed together. The film received a critical reaction and did not succeed in commercial success. In December 2006, Simpson performed a recreation of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" (1980) as a salute to the artist at the Kennedy Center Awards. Simpson forgot the lyrics to the song and the show received scathing feedback; the possibility to redo the song for the cameras was also removed from the broadcast ultimately. Critics pointed to Simpson's fifth studio album and her second film's underwhelming, when her sister Ashlee suffered from a similar loss in success.

Simpson had an on-again, off-again relationship with singer-songwriter John Mayer from August 2006 to May 2007. In her 2020 book, Open Book, Simpson chronicled her friendship with Mayer long after their breakup.

Simpson began dating Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in November 2007. The relationship between the Cowboys and Simpson was tense, as some blamed Simpson for Romo's poor results in games after the pair began together. Some followers referred to Simpson's "Yoko Romo," a reference to Yoko Ono, to whom many followers of The Beatles attributed to the band's disbanding in 1970. And then-president George W. Bush wrote about the two couples' friendship, criticizing Simpson implicitly for Romo's lackluster results. Simpson and Romo broke off their friendship in July 2009. Simpson appeared alongside Luke Wilson in the film Blonde Ambition (2006); the film had a limited release in Texas before being released on home media. Later, she appeared in the direct-to-video film Private Valentine (Brown & Dangerous (2008), portraying an actress who joins the military. Following its unveiling, the film received mainly critical feedback. In 2008, Simpson co-created Fancy, her first fragrance, parlux Fragrances, to debut her first fragrance, Fancy. The fragrance, unlike Private Valentine's, had a positive commercial reaction.

Simpson began recording her sixth studio album in 2007, with her father announcing that she was playing with country music for the first time. Simpson claimed to have grown up around country music and wanted to "give something back." On June 20, she sang "Come On Over" (2008) as the project's lead single. The album debuted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at number forty-one, making it the first appearance on the chart for an artist's first appearance. Do You Know (2008) was first published on September 9. In the first week of its introduction, the project debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 chart, with 65,000 copies being sold. As of 2012, the album has only sold over 200,000 copies in the United States. Simpson opened the Bob That Head Tour (2009) from January to March 2009. Simpson's attempt to transition into country music received a critical reaction. Following a success at the Country Thunder Festival in Wisconsin, a crowd booed her. Simpson's work was also included in Eminem's 2009 song "We Made You" and Trisha Paytas portrayed her.

The Price of Beauty, Simpson's VH1 documentary series, began airing in March 2010. Simpson's popularity spanned the globe, exposing viewers to the variety of perceptions of beauty in different cultures. Simpson revealed that the premiere episode attracted one million viewers but that the series would return in 2011 with a new look; these plans never came to fruition. Simpson originally planned to record her seventh studio album with Epic Records, but later released the compilation album Playlist: The Very Best of Jessica Simpson (2010). Epic Records was released with no hype and with no success. Simpson later signed a new recording deal with eleveneleven and Primary Wave Music, and she began recording on her Christmas-themed seventh studio album. On November 22, she announced Happy Christmas (2010), but it only appeared on the lower half of the Billboard 200 chart for a brief period. Simpson began dating former NFL tight end Eric Johnson in May 2010 and the couple announced their engagement in November of this year.

Simpson debuted on the NBC reality television show Fashion Star as a mentor. Simpson sparked the weight gain she gained during her pregnancy when she signed a multimillion-dollar contract with Weight Watchers in 2012. Simpson produced television commercials for the firm, with the first airing in September 2012. Simpsons gave birth to Maxwell Drew Johnson on May 1, 2012, the year's first maternity clothing line was born. Vintage Bloom, she later launched a fragrance that was inspired by motherhood, was released. Simpson revealed in December 2012 that she was expecting a second child with Johnson. She introduced a bedding and drapery line in a sophisticated bohemian style with floral patterns. In August 2014, she introduced a signature fragrance.
