Barlow is one of Britain's most popular songwriters, having released fourteen number one singles and twenty-four top ten hits.

With Take That,Barlow has received six Ivor Novello Awards, six top-ten singles, and two number one albums, as well as three number one singles, six top ten singles, and eight number one singles.

He has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Early life and influences

Barlow was born in Frodsham, Cheshire, in 1971, his second son Colin (died 15 October 2009) and Marjorie Barlow (née Cowan). In 1982, he attended Weaver Vale Primary School and moved on to Frodsham High School. He begins his love of music at an early age and claims himself to be "one of those kids who's always dancing in front of the television viewing [his] reflection." He was heavily influenced by 1970s and 1980s pop music. Barlow began playing on top of the Pops at age ten, and he continued to play regularly afterwards. Trevor Horn, as well as future collaborators Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), as early influences, Barlow has cited Trevor Horn and future collaborators Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). He has credited Elton John with inciting him to play the piano. The Pet Shop Boys, who later sponsored Take That on the Progress Live tour in 2011, was the first CD he bought.

When Barlow was 15 years old, he competed in "Let's Pray for Christmas" at one of Christmas's best parties. He was invited to West Heath Studios in London to record his song after making it to the semi-finals. This inspired him to perform on the northern club circuit, as well as his own songs. Barlow's first appearance was in Wales, at the Connah's Quay Labour Club in the late 1980s, and he was £18 per performance on Saturday evenings, where he performed songs including Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "The Power of Love" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

Barlow's 1989-1991 named Wigan show business agent Barry Woolley to be his boss and released a single ("Love Is in the Air") that was never released commercially. Barlow was eventually connected with casting agent Nigel Martin-Smith, by respected celebrity photographer Doc Braham, who took Barlow's first commercial head-shots. Graham-Smith was a friend of Braham, who introduced Barlow to Graham, who was keen on starting a boy band. Martin-Smith decided to use Barlow as the lead singer after being inspired by his self-written work, including an early demo tape of Barlow's "A Million Love Songs," indicating that the band will be built around Barlow's vocals and songwriting skills.

Personal life

Barlow married Dawn Andrews, who appeared on Take That's 1995 Nobody Else Tour, in 2000. They have four children: Daniel (born 2000), Emily (born 2002), and Daisy (born 2009). He revealed on August 4, 2012, that their daughter, Poppy, was stillborn. "We're so sorry to learn that we've lost our baby," he wrote in a short letter. We're now focusing on [Poppy]'s funeral and adoreing our three children with all our hearts. We'd like to know that our personal information be treated at this difficult time." "I needed to understand this wasn't going to heal with time," he would say later. Despite the death of his daughter just a week earlier, Barlow performed the hit "Rule the World" at the London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, earning worldwide recognition for the courage and determination of Barlow to take the stage so soon after his tragic loss. Barlow would not attend the X Factor press launch due to the bereavement.

Barlow's autobiography, "My Takeaway," he said he was a fan of Liverpool FC, with their song "You'll Never Walk Alone" being one of the first songs he learned to play on the piano. He is also a fan of the Warrington Wolves and the New York Knicks. Barlow also stated in his autobiography that he was aboard the Edgware tube train, one of the victims of the London bombings on July 7, 2005.

Barlow's "Don't Give Up" (the 1986 duet between Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush) as the song that had most inspired him in 2009, was the one that had the most inspired him. "I don't think you can hear this song without feeling inspired," he said, "it might save anyone." The lyrics are so inspiring. Specifically, I was having a rough time in the 1990s when the song first appeared on the radio. This was one of the few times I've had to pull the car over to listen to a song.

With a competition called "School Stars," the Conservative Party declared their intention to promote musical achievement amongst young people in schools during the 2010 general election campaign. Barlow appeared at a school staged rally to celebrate the introduction of the programme by then-Conservative leader David Cameron's. At the same time, Barlow performed "Greatest Day" at the event. Barlow responded positively to the fact that he was supporting the Conservatives in the 2010 election: "I would not be here if I were not."

Barlow, along with Howard Donald and Mark Owen (and more than 1,000 others), invested £26 million in music industry investment schemes in June 2012. When it was announced that the plans might be used as tax shelters for wealthy people, the news ignited controversy. Barlow was accused of tax avoidance rather than tax evasion because the scheme was not unlawful at the time Barlow invested in it. Barlow's counsel rebutted the allegations by saying he "paid significant taxes" and that the plans were not intended to tax avoidance purposes but were legitimate commercial enterprises. A judge determined that the scheme was intended to save tax, with the program netting damages of £336 million to encourage Barlow and others to defray those taxes from other income. Barlow (and Donald and Owen, as well as their boss Jonathon Wild) reported in June 2016 that they would not appeal a decision that they are liable to re-pay the tax. "To anyone who was offended by the tax stories," Barlow apologised on Twitter. Paul Stenning, the band's financial advisor who worked for the band in 1995, told BBC Radio that they were "meticulously disseminated."
