FKA Twigs Life

Tahliah Debrett Barnett (born 16 January 1988), also known as FKA twigs, is a British singer and songwriter.

Born in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, she became a backup dancer after moving to South London when she was 17 years old.

She made her musical debut with the extended plays EP1 (2012) and EP2 (2013). LP1, her debut studio album, was released in August 2014 to critical acclaim, debuting at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and number 30 on the US Billboard 200.

It was later nominated for the 2014 Mercury Prize.

M3LL155X EP was released in 2015 to further critical acclaim, as well as her second studio album Magdalene four years later.

Her work has been described as "genre bending" and based on various genres, including experimental music, trip hop, R&B, and avant-garde.

Early life

Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born and raised in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Her mother, an English woman of partially Spanish descent who used to be a dancer and gymnast, and her father, a composer, is a Jamaican. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, a "jazz fanatic of English, Spanish, Jamaican, and Egyptian descent," and she did not know her father until she was 18 years old. Barnett grew up in Gloucestershire, and described the area as "kind of in the middle of nowhere." She attended St Edward's School, Cheltenham, a private Catholic academy for boys and girls aged 11 to 18. An academic scholarship funded her education at the school. She began taking opera and ballet lessons as a young girl and appeared in many St Edward's School productions.

Barnett began playing in youth clubs at the age of 16. At 17, she moved to South London to pursue a career as a dancer, where she also attended the BRIT School. She transferred from the BRIT School to Croydon College to pursue an education in fine arts after changing her concentration from dance to music. She appeared in music videos by musicians including Kylie Minogue, Plan B, Ed Sheeran, Taio Cruz, Jessie J, and Wretch 32. Barnett appeared in her 2011 film "Do It Like a Dude" as a backup dancer for Jessie J and appeared on "Do It Like a Dude" as a back dancer, and she appeared in her "Price Tag" video. She appeared on Dionne Bromfield's "Yeah Right" video. She appeared in Beyoncé Wants Groceries, a two-minute BBC comedy sketch in which she was a back dancer in a supermarket in 2011. Barnett started searching for what she calls "her sound" at 18 years old. It's about this time that she wrote "I'm Your Doll." She ended up with a lot of "poor demos." She served as a hostess in a strip joint for a time and performed at The Box often.

Personal life

Barnett began dating actor Robert Pattinson in September 2014. The couple, who were engaged, ended their marriage in the summer of 2017. Barnett was targeted in high-profile instances of racial and sexist online bullying as a result of their friendship.

Barnett revealed on Instagram in May 2018 that she underwent surgery to remove fibroid tumors from her uterus. She referred to her experience as "living with a fruit bowl of pain every day" and praised other women with the condition. Barnett revealed in a podcast interview with Nigerian-British entrepreneur Irene Agbontaen that she went vegan in order to avoid exacerbating tumour symptoms.

Barnett was in a relationship with American actress Shia LaBeouf from mid-2018 to May 2019. They met on the set of Honey Boy, which was on their way to the film Honey Boy. In December 2020, she filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf in Los Angeles alleging sexual harassment, assault, and emotional pain in the course of their relationship. "Ibusive" to himself and those around him "for years," LaBeouf said in his response, and that he was "ashamed" and "sorry to those [he] injured." LaBeouf denied all charges made by Barnett later.

Many sources have incorrectly reported that the letters stand for "Formerly Known As," but Barnett has stated in multiple interviews that the letters do not refer to anything in particular: "I"t stands for a series of letters. I was going to be like FK1 Twigs...or AFK Twigs...I just wanted a series of letters that seemed to be both masculine and strong. FKA worked fine. It's nothing; it's just capital letters."

Is this the most bizarre event EVER? Fashionistas in London are split on Met Gala, with some being baffled over the all-star party's 'randomness,' while others applaud a "love letter to theatre."

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 15, 2023
On Thursday evening, the great and good of fashion descended on London for the Vogue World bash, which was branded the UK's Met Gala. Though the annual New York event has been praised as the most important on the fashion calendar, London's version did not appear to be on point as talent was on display at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which was not particularly impressive. Newspaper commentators were split on the occasion, which acts as a fundraiser for the UK's performing arts industry, with the magazine's Editor-in-Chief Anna handling proceedings and Vogue editor Edward Enninful attending.
