Personal life
In 2017, Johnson talked about her experience with Rita Ora, a former X Factor coach, who said that she was "still in touch with Rita."
In 2018, Johnson was chastised for several homophobic tweets she had made as a schoolgirl in 2013, which included the regular use of the homophobic word "faggot." "I was young and stupid, and hanging around with the wrong crowd, and she didn't know any better," she apologized for the tweets.
Career
Johnson auditioned for the twelfth series of The X Factor, a singing American pop music family group The Jackson 5's "Who's Lovin' You" from 2005. "It's a really difficult song to sing," she said, but she wanted to make a good impression." Following the performance, she received a standing ovation from all four judges and the audience and then moved to "bootcamp." With 4th Impact (formerly known as 4th Power), Sherilyn Hamilton-Shaw, Neneth Lyons, Jasmine Leigh Morris, and Andre Batchelor, and was accepted into the next challenge at "bootcamp." In the second challenge, she performed "Lay Me Down" and made it to the six-chair competition.
At "bootcamp," Johnson was mentored by Rita Ora, who determined the public's discretion. Jennifer Hudson's "And I Am Telling You That I'm Not Going" by Jennifer Hudson made it past the six-chair challenge to "judges' houses; when Johnson arrived, all six chairs were packed; Ora described the atmosphere as "like a zoo." At judges' houses, she sang "Respect" by Aretha Franklin in front of Ora and American musician Meghan Trainor in Los Angeles; this performance drew media notice because Johnson wore two separate pairs of shoes, with some viewers suggesting some sort of faking. Monica Michael, a wildcard entrant, returned to Ora for the live shows two weeks after it was recorded; Lauren Murray and Kiera Weathers were selected by Ora for the live shows.
Following Weathers' demises in the second week, Michael and Murray in the third week and Murray in the semi-finals, Johnson and ChΓ© Chesterman performed a cover version of "I Believe I Can Fly" by Yolanda Adams, making him the final female in the competition. On December 12, she duetted with her mentor, Ora. She performed her winner's single the next night, as a front of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" album. She won The X Factor on December 13, 2015, becoming the first female winner since Alexandra Burke in 2008 and also the youngest winner ever in the Girls category, defeating Joe McElderry, who was 18 years old when he won in 2009.
Johnson released "Forever Young" after winning The X Factor. On the day after winning, she plugged the single on Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, and This Morning, a day after. X Factor judge Nick Grimshaw aired the single on The X Factor's radio show, Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and This Morning, continuously. On December 18, 2015, her version of the song debuted at number nine on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the youngest ever position on entry for a debut single from an X Factor winner. This can be attributed in large part to the chart day's shift from Sunday, when she was announced as the winner, to Friday, which resulted in her single only receiving four days' sales. The single descended to number twelve on the Christmas Day chart, becoming the lowest ranking X Factor winner's song on the Christmas Day chart ever. Overall, the single is the lowest charting X Factor winner's single to date, with all other champion's singles achieving top the charts or at least reaching the top ten. On the 2015 Text Santa radio broadcast, Johnson performed "Forever Young" on December 18, 2015.
Her debut studio album was expected to be out as soon as possible, possibly as early as February 2016, and it would feature her debut single "Forever Young." The singer later tweeted, "If I don't like it, there's no way it will be out." People will know me from this album, so it needs to be perfect."
