Eric Chou (born 22 June 1995) is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter.

Chou's been dubbed "king of the lovelorn people" by Taiwanese television for his ballads such as "How Have You Been" and "The Distance of Love."

Personal life

Chou revealed in January 2019 that he has been in a relationship with Sanlih news anchor Dacie Chao, who is six years older than him, since March 2018, although previously denying the allegations. The couple broke up in October 2020 and reformed in 2021.

Life and career

Eric Chou was born in Taiwan on June 22, 1995. Jimmy/James, his younger brother Jimmy/James, and his older brother Alex () who is also active as a singer-songwriter. He learned chess to develop his character and even won a championship at a young age. When he was nine years old, his uncle took him to Jay Chou's concert rehearsal. "I heard him sing "Hair Like Snow" at the time, but it was the time I was determined to become a singer-songwriter like him," Chou said. He and his family immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, where he attended Fay School and Northfield Mount Hermon School at the age of 12. Chou recalled that he didn't have to sit still when he first started playing the piano and was forced by his mother to coerce him. However, playing the piano had become his outlet to express his emotions, and he began to play more often during his spare time in the United States. He gets his inspiration for songwriting from movies, his family, and personal experiences. During his stay in Boston, he composed "The Distance of Love," which was inspired by his failed attempt to impress a girl he loved from high school. "I was hoping I'd really get into music to make myself more charming," Chou said, "and that was really the first motivation." Chou returned to Taiwan after his parents' lives in Shanghai at eighteen.

Chou was talent scouted by Taiwanese actor Edison Huang () who learned from a friend that his son "can sing" and was asked to perform at his wedding with actress Queenie Tai when he was seventeen. In the Taiwanese drama The Distance of Love performed by Hector, who would later be selected as the ending theme of the film The Way We We Were where Tai also appeared. He made his acting debut in the same story by appearing as a singer.

Chou's first single under Sony Music Taiwan was "The Distance of Love" in August 2014. The song will appear on his debut studio album My Way to Love, which was released on December 24th. Since its debut, the album soared to the top 18 charts. In 2015, he was named "The Distance of Love" at the Hito Music Awards, winning the TV Theme Song Award for "The Distance of Love."

Chou was a composer for the Chinese television series Magical Space-Time in 2016. He wrote three songs, including "I Love You So" by his brother Alex Chou, "Fleeting Happiness" by Taiwanese singer A-Lin, and "Back to the Day" by Chou himself, as well as the opening, ending, and theme song of the drama respectively. He was also involved in a microcosmic launch for a ramen brand and debuted the theme song, "I Loved You."

Chou's second studio album, What Love Has Taught Us, was released on August 5, 2016. "How Have You Been?" It contained his hit song, "How Have You Been?" Its music video received 185 million views as of July 2022, leading the KKBOX Mandarin Weekly Singles Chart for 30 weeks in a row. The song earned him the reputation of "king of the lovelorn people." The album's success was revealed, as well as a solo concert, "This Is Love," which has been announced to help promote the collection. Within two minutes, tickets for the Taipei show in November sold out in a matter of seconds. On October, the festival opened in Singapore, followed by Taipei in November, and then Malaysia in Malaysia.

Chou received the Artist of the Year award at the 12th KKBOX Music Awards in 2017, making him the youngest singer to do so. He held his Valentine's concert in Macau in February 2017, where he performed his latest song "Unbreakable Love" and a cover of Hebe Tien's "A Little Happiness." Chou performed in his sold-out show in Taipei on May 21, 2017, where he also revealed that he is currently working on his new album. In August 2017, he revealed the ticket-selling for his second concert tour, "22 TWENTY TWO," in Taipei, and the tickets sold out within 6 minutes. Tickets were also sold out within an hour after a second date was announced, and a third date was confirmed. Chou wrapped up his concert tour "This Is Love" on October and launched his second concert tour "22 TWENTY TWO" in November, where he premiered his new song "Without Her" which will eventually appear on his new album. Chou's third studio album, The Chaos After You, debuted on December 15, 2017. The album features ten songs, with the same name appearing on the title track. He brought an end to the year by appearing at the Eve countdown party in Taoyuan New Year.

Chou's album "The Chaos After You" received two accolades at the Hito Music Awards, including the friday Digital Song Award. In August 2018, he competed in the Tencent competition Chao Yin Idols, where participants collaborated with various artists to create a new musical style. He co-wrote the song "What's Wrong" with Chinese singer and actor Wu Jiacheng during the competition. On the same month, the live version of Su Yunying performed with Chinese singer Su Yunying was released digitally on Chinese streaming platforms. Chou appeared in The Elfin's Golden Castle, the male lead in IQIYI web drama, in November 2018. Chou's album, "Nobody But Me," debuted in December 2018. The single was followed by a music video.

Chou's first EP, Freedom, was released on January 10, 2019, which features five tracks. It contained the songs "What's Wrong" and "Nobody But Me," which had been released the previous year. Chou performed a medley of his songs, including "At Least I Remember" from his latest album, at the 15th KKBOX Music Awards. Chou's "How Have You Been" concert tour began on May 11, 2019 in Seoul. It was his first time to perform in Taipei Arena in front of 11,000 fans. According to reports, tickets were sold out in two minutes. In August, the festival in Kaohsiung Arena began. Chou's album "Forever Beautiful" was released in October 2019 to raise money for a breast cancer campaign.

Chou re-released a deluxe version of his EP Freedom in December 2019 as his fourth studio album, which featured the original five songs as well as additional four new songs. In addition, YouTube's music video for his song "What's Wrong" was named as the most watched Mandopop music video in Taiwan, second only popular singer in Taiwan behind Jay Chou and above Jolin Tsai throughout 2019. Chou was also on G.E.M., which was also featured on G.E.M. "Don't Forget It" is the singer's song.

Chou's fifth studio album, When We Were Young, was released on January 7, 2020. The album contains eleven songs, including "I'm Happy."

Chou performed at Taipei Arena on August 8th, becoming the first artist to perform at the COVID-19 pandemic as part of his "How Have You Been Tour" tour. The performance attracted 10,000 concertgoers, who attended the show at full capacity. Eric Chou sung together with other Asian Sony artists to raise funds for the COVID-19 pandemic.
