Ong Seong-wu (born August 25, 1995) is a South Korean singer and actor.

He is best known for his appearance in Produce 101 Season 2, where he finished in fifth place and was a former member of the show's derivative boy group Wanna One.

Early life

Ong Seong-wu was born in Incheon, South Korea, ong Seong-wu. He is the youngest of two children, with one older sister as his elder sister. He attended Guwol Middle School and Hanlim Multi Art School, both graduating in 2014. He graduated from Dong Seoul University as a dance and acting major. During this period, Ong also performed professionally as part of several street and B-boy dance companies.

Since his sister began playing the piano, Ong's mother encouraged him to buy a musical instrument and begin playing the drums. Ong was spotted as a trainee by the now-defunct entertainment company Lion Media while playing the drums at a band contest in 2008. However, internal challenges with the company and its eventual closure caused the deferral of his debut, as well as contractual issues that barred him from working with other companies for a long time. He joined Fantagio as an acting trainee at the recommendation of one of his university professors in August 2016.

Career

Despite being an acting student, Ong was sent by his employer as a representative of his company in Produce 101 (season 2) due to his extensive experience in singing and dancing. He received an 'A' rank in the assessments and finished in fifth position in the finale with 984,756 votes. He will make his debut as a member of Wanna One as part of the top eleven contestants.

Ong was involved in a short film called Short Film Project: Beginning before his participation in Produce 101. On June 19, 2017, the short film Seong-wu Is Alright, was released. In addition, he made a special appearance on the mobile drama Idol Fever, which aired from July 7 to July 17, 2017.

Ong debuted as a member of Wanna One on August 7, 2017. He continued to represent the organization on several television programs, including Happy Together, The Return of Superman, and Saturday Night Live Korea. He also served as a special emcee on M Countdown and Inkigayo's music show broadcasts. Ong, alongside fellow groupmate Kang Daniel, was cast for the pilot episode of Master Key and later confirmed as a cast member. His appearance on the show attracted positive feedback from media outlets, including praise for his skilled deception of his co-stars in the show's biggest win to date.

Ong appeared in singer Huh Gak's music video for his digital single "Only You" in November.

Ong was named one of the top emcees of Show in February 2018. Music Core. He resigned from his position in September 2018. He has appeared on a number of variety shows as well. Kang Daniel and Kim Jae-hwan appeared on Living Together in Empty Room, and later became a cast member of the Jungle Sabah's reality show Law of the Jungle Sabah, alongside his fellow groupmate Ha Sung-woon, which aired from July 27, 2018.

On December 31, 2018, his Wanna One deal came to an end. However, he continued to perform with the group until the company's formal farewell concerts on January 24–27, 2019.

Ong embarked on his first solo fan-meeting tour, "Eternity," in March and April 2019. He was also named PR Ambassador of the Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education on March 7, 2019.

Ong unveiled the single "Heart Sign" as part of Pepsi and Starship Entertainment's 2019 Pepsi K-Pop Collab Project. "Energetic," was written by producers Flowblow, who produced Wanna One's hit debut single. On June 11, 2019, the music video was released.

Ong made his acting debut in the second half of the year, appearing as the male lead in JTBC's youth drama At Eighteen alongside Kim Hyang-gi and Shin Seung-ho. The drama explores some of the challenges that youth in South Korea face, from first love, the pressures of school, and parental aspiration, to topics such as school bullying and bullying. Ong played Choi Jun-woo, a transfer student who is incorrectly accused of school violence. He received many accolades for his emotive performance and went on to win multiple awards for the role, including Best Rookie Award and Hallyu Star Award at the Korea Drama Awards. At the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards, Ong was nominated, and he was commended. In the Best New Actor – Television category, we have a winner. Ong also performed "Our Story" as part of the official soundtrack for the drama, which was released on August 8, 2019.

Ong launched "We Belong" in January 2020, his second solo fan-meeting tour. On January 9, the digital single "We Belong" was released. Ong appeared on the second season of Traveler's travel variety show Traveler, alongside fellow actress Ahn Jae-hong and Kang Ha-neul. The variety show, which debuted on February 15, was focusing on the trio's backpacking adventures in Argentina and began airing on February 15. On the first episode, he attracted a lot of attention for his photography skills.

Ong's debut as a musician with his first solo album, Layers, ong made his comeback as a performer. On March 25, the EP, as well as lead single "Gravity," was released. Ong, the male lead in the JTBC drama More Than Friends, alongside Shin Ye-eun and Kim Dong-jun, and play photographer Lee Soo, began appearing as the male lead. The drama premiered on September 25th. Ong's soundtrack included "Late Regret" on the drama's soundtrack.

In addition, Ong will make his film debut in Life is Beautiful, starring Ryu Seung-ryong and Yum Jung-ah. In the second half of 2022, the film will premiere in theaters. Ong will appear in the film Jung's Ranch, alongside Ryu Seung-ryong and Park Hae-joon. This will be his second time working with Ryu.

Ong has been confirmed to appear in the drama Shall We Have A Cup of Coffee in 2021. It airs on KakaoTV and is confirmed to be a part of Netflix's Seoul Vibe, which is expected to air in 2022. In Lee Seung-hwan and Sunwoo Junga's music video for the song "How Can You," released on November 18, 2021, Ong appeared alongside dancer Noze in "How Could You."

In 2022, Ong revealed that the fan meeting 'RE:MEET' would be held for the second time in March 2022, both offline and online.
