Dua Lipa (born 22 August 1995) is an English singer, songwriter, and model.

She joined Warner Music Group in 2015 and soon released her first song, "New Love," after being on the road. In 2017, her eponymous debut album was released, containing seven singles, including two UK top-one single "Be the One" and "IDGAF" and the UK number one single "New Rules," which also reached number six in the United States.

Calvin Harris' single "One Kiss" debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and became the longest running number one for a female artist in 2018.

The singles' success led her self-titled album to become the most streamed female album on Spotify, as well as platinum in several countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.

She released lead single "Don't Start Now" from her upcoming second album Future Nostalgia, which is set to be released in 2020 in late 2019.

Lipa has been named in three Brit Awards and two Grammy Awards.

Early life

Dua Lipa was born in London and the eldest child of Kosovo Albanian parents Anesa (née Rexha) and Dukagjin Lipa from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia. (present-day Kosovo) Her family is Muslim. She is of Bosnian descent, according to her maternal grandmother.

Her ancestry can also be traced back to Peja, Kosovo. Both of her grandfathers were historians. Rina and Gjin have a sister and a brother named Gjin. Lipa was heavily influenced by her father, who was the lead singer and guitarist of the Kosovan rock band Oda. Her father continued to perform music at home, including his own compositions and songs of musicians such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Sting, the Police, and Stereophonics. Lipa began singing at the age of five.

Lipa grew up in West Hampstead, London. Fitzjohn's Primary School, where the cello was part of her music lessons. The teacher told her that she would not sing when she auditioned for the school choir. She began singing lessons at the Sylvia Young Theatre School at the age of nine. After Kosovo declared independence in 2008, Lipa and her family migrated to Pristina. She enrolled Milenium i Trett' School, learned more about the Albanian language, and considered a career in music.

Lipa returned to London at the age of 15. She completed her A-Levels at Parliament Hill School and then rejoined Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time. She performed her own songs on SoundCloud and YouTube. On YouTube, she began posting videos of herself defending songs such as "If I Ain't Got You" (2004) by Alicia Keys and "Beautiful" (2002) by Christina Aguilera. Lipa modelled with Topshop and signed with a modeling company, giving her a "singer" role in an ITV commercial for The X Factor in 2013, which was filmed in 1979, "Lost in Music." She acquired a designer and a manager.

Personal life

"Dua" was her grandmother's idea and it means "love" in Albanian.

Dula Peep is a mispronunciation that originated from Wendy Williams, a daytime television presenter, in 2018. She has since embraced the name in a positive way.

Albanian is her native tongue, and she also speaks English with a British accent.

Lipa began her on-again, off-again relationship with English chef Isaac Carew, from whom she first broke in February 2017. Paul Klein, then-lead singer of the American band LANY, from August 2017 to January 2018. She resurfaced her acquaintance with Carew, who then dated from January 2018 to June 2019. On June 14, she began a relationship with American model Anwar Hadid. In December 2021, Lipa and Hadid broke up.

Music career

Lipa signed a 2013 deal with Tap Management, led by Ben Mawson and Ed Millett, while serving as a waitress in a cocktail bar. Lipa's lawyer told Mawson that she wasn't allowed to sign another newspaper contract, which was the opposite of what she had expected. They later gave her a monthly salary to quit her job and concentrate on recording music. Lipa co-wrote the song "Hotter than Hell" during one of the sessions, which would later lead to her signing a contract with Warner Bros. Records in 2014. Millett rebutted: "Dua was really smart," she told Warner Bros. Parts because they didn't have a big female pop star and they needed one." They really wanted her, so the team's attention began on day one." Lipa's first album, "New Love," was released in August 2015 by Emile Haynie and Andrew Wyatt. "Be the One" was her second single released in Europe in October 2015, debuting in the top ten in over eleven European territories as well as charting in the top ten. The song became a hit on airplay in Australia and New Zealand, with figures 6 and 20 respectively. She was unveiled in November 2015 as one of the BBC Sound of...2016 long list. She began in January 2016 and finished in November 2016.

Lipa's third album, "Last Dance," was released on February 18, followed by "Hotter than Hell" on May 6th. The former was extremely profitable, particularly in the United Kingdom, where it reached their high rank of number 15. "Blow Your Mind (Mwah) was her fifth overall single, peaking at number 10 in the United Kingdom on August 26th. It was the singer's first appearance on the US Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 72. The album also ranked on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and ranked number 23 on the Billboard Top 40 chart. Lipa's self-titled debut studio album was released on June 2nd, 2017. "New Rules," Lipa's first top-one in the United Kingdom and first by a female solo artist since Adele's "Hello" in 2015. The song's best-selling single to date, the album has also charted in top ten of other nations, including number two in Australia, number six in the United States, and number seven in Canada. Lipa appeared at the Glastonbury Festival in June. Lipa appeared at the We The Fest, an Indonesian music festival in Jakarta, for the following month. In October, Jools Holland of the BBC appeared on BBC's Later... Lipa was named as the most streamed woman of 2017 by Spotify in December. On the album "High" by American DJ Whethan for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack, which was released in February 2018. In March 2018, she began working on new material for her second album. Lipa and Calvin Harris launched the single "One Kiss" on April 6th, making it Lipa's second top-one on the chart; Lipa also credited as a writer. The single went on to become the UK's most popular song of the year, and topped the charts for eight weeks in a row. On May 26, she appeared in the first ceremony of the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. Lipa will announce collaborations with other artists later this year, including one with Mark Ronson and Diplo's newly formed superduo Silk City, which was announced. In September, Lipa appeared at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Lipa endorsed Jaguar's latest hybrid car, the I-PACE, in the same month. Lipa's "Want To" was a brand new product that included fans of Dua Lipa x Jaguar's song "Want To" and a service that allowed fans to create their own version of Dua Lipa x Jaguar's song on the Join the Pace website, based on their own driving habits or the music they listen to and post it on social media. Jaguar and Lipa's team set the world record for the "most remixed song ever" on Lipa's website. The singer's debut album, Dua Lipa: The Complete Version, an extended version of her debut album on which three new songs are included, including the aforementioned "Want To" and her previous collaborations with other artists, was released in October. "Kiss and Make Up" was a project that culminated in a joint effort with Blackpink's South Korean girl group "Kiss and Make Up."

Lipa released "Swan Song" as part of the 2019 film Alita: Battle Angel's soundtrack. Lipa spent the previous year writing for her second studio album, which was also published in the same month. Future Nostalgia reached number one on the Official UK Albums Chart the following week in April 2020, while four of the album's singles landed in the top ten of the Official Singles Chart. When the album was first week, it held the record for having the lowest one-week sales when it was at the top of the charts in the modern era; when it was first week, the album hit its high-point—the week beginning 15 May 2020—the album had only sold 7,317 units. Lipa became the first British female artist since Vera Lynn to have three top-ten singles in a single calendar year, with Lynn having three in 1952. Lipa eventually broke this record with the single "Levitating," which also peaked inside the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, for her third top-ten in the United States overall. She was appointed global ambassador of Évian, France's mineral water brand, on August 11, 2020. Lipa made the announcement on social media, where she said that "working with the brand has been an honor." Lipa unveiled a remix of "Levitating" starring American artists Madonna and Missy Elliott on August 13th. It was the lead single from Club Future Nostalgia, a remix collection of Future Nostalgia tracks by Blessed Madonna and Mark Ronson that was released on August 28th. Lipa's second remix of "Levitating" starring American rapper DaBaby was released on October 2nd, 2020; Lipa also posted the music video for the second remix on the same day. Angèle, a French and Belgian singer, was photographed on the set of a music video on October 14, 2020. The singers' collaboration, "Fever," was revealed later this month; it was announced on October 30th, 2020. Future Nostalgia's French re-released it. Lipa appeared on "Prisoner," a song from Miley Cyrus' seventh studio album Plastic Hearts. Along with the music video, the single was released on November 19, 2020. On the 19 December episode of Saturday Night Live, it was revealed that Lipa will be the musical guest on the 19 December show. Lipa performed in Studio 2054, a livestream concert hosted by FKA Twigs, as well as several songs from Future Nostalgia, a newly unreleased track for FKA Twigs, as well as "New Rules," "One Kiss" and "Electricity" on November 27th. Among other special guests on the occasion were Blessed Madonna, Angèle, Kylie Minogue, and Elton John. Future Nostalgia was the most streamed album by a woman and the fifth most streamed album overall on Spotify in 2020.

Lipa and Future Nostalgia: The Moonlight Edition co-released a single titled "We're Good" on February 11, 2021. On June 20,21, Lipa performed the song "Can They Hear Us" from the film Gully's soundtrack. Lipa performed again with Elton John on the song "Cold Heart (Pnau remix) on August 13, 2021), which was John's lead single from John's studio album The Lockdown Sessions. The single debuted on the UK Singles Chart on October 15th, becoming Lipa's third song to do so. Lipa launched Service95, a weekly lifestyle newsletter, as well as the accompanying podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service, which was available in February 2022.
