Stephen Anthony James Duffy (born in Alum Rock, Birmingham, England), is an English singer, guitarist, and songwriter.

Duran Duran's founding member, singer, bassist, and later drummer.

He went on to record as a solo performer under various brand names and is the co-founder and songwriter for The Lilac Time with his older brother Nick.

Robbie Williams and Steven Page have also co-written with Robbie Williams and Steven Page.

Duran Duran and other early work

John Taylor was introduced to John Taylor while attending the School of Foundation Studies & Experimental Workshop at Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University). Duran Duran Duran and Taylor's childhood friend, Nick Rhodes, joined the group together. Though Taylor was the guitarist (later switching to bass) and Rhodes played the synthesizer, Duffy was the band's vocalist/lyricist and bassist. Duffy switched to drums when bass player Simon Colley arrived. Duran Duran Duran Duran Duran Duran Duran Duran Duran left both the academy and the band in 1979 before he signed with EMI in 1980.

He went on to form Clearly Five Believers, also known as The Subterranean Hawks or The Hawks, and he made his first four-track recordings. In 1981, the Hawks' only single, "Words of Hope," was released.
