Hucknall rose to international prominence in the 1980s as the lead singer and songwriter of the soul-influenced pop band Simply Red, with whom he enjoyed a 25-year career and has sold more than 50 million albums.
Hucknall was described by Australian music magazine Rhythms as "one of the most iconic blue-eyed soul singers," while Q credited him with "the most elooping voice this side of Motown."
Early life
Hucknall, who was born in Manchester on June 8, 1960, was the only child. His mother abandoned his family when he was three years old; this upheaval inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years," which would be one of Simply Red's most popular and best-known hits. Reginald (1935–2009), a barber in Stockport, was brought up in Denton by his father. He had a good childhood until the age of ten, when he began to argue with his father "because there was no woman to act as referee." He attended Audenshaw School before beginning his studies at Tameside College and Manchester Polytechnic's School of Art, where he was a fine art student: although he was not in art school, he lived in Hulme. He would not reunite with his mother, Maureen, who was then living in Dallas, the United States, would not be until the mid-1990s. He had only seen her twice since she left when she was last seen in a 2008 interview. He has ancestry from his mother, and his paternal grandmother is from County Offaly. His maternal grandmother was Jewish.
Personal life
In 2010 at the 16th-century Fortress Castle in Glenisla, Scotland, Hucknall and his wife Gabriella Wesberry married. Romy True Hucknall's daughter was born in June 2007.
He spent a considerable amount of time in Ireland, where he and bandmate Chris De Margary purchased the Glenmore Estate near the village of Cloghan, County Donegal, in Ireland. Hucknall and De Margary are avid fishermen. From the estate, they run a fishing and hunting tourism company. In March 2014, Hucknall and a neighbor in Ireland settled a hunting and fishing rights case, which is now in its fifth year. Judge O'Hagan had asked both sides to leave and discuss reaching a compromise or else the trial will drag on for years.
Ask Property Development, a firm that builds city squares and public buildings, is owned by him.
He lives in Catania, Sicily, where he produces wines under the name "Il Cantante" (The Singer).
Hucknall is both a Manchester United fan and a promoter of Manchester United. The 1996 UEFA European Football Championship's "We're in This Together" was the competition anthem, and he performed it at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Music career
In June 1976, Hucknall was one of the audience at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, where the Sex Pistols were playing. He began his career in the late 1970s, when he was part of the band Frantic Elevators. The Frantic Elevators released four singles, including a version of "Holding Back to the Years" that he later performed with Simply Red.
As the lead singer and key member of Simply Red, he became the band's most popular front man. On album artwork and in films, his face and long curly red hair were prominent.
Despite being white, Hucknall received an Outstanding Achievement award from the Music of Black Origin Awards in 1997 (MOBO Awards).
