Rosa Isabel Buena (born 21 May 1985) is a British singer and songwriter who rose to fame as a member of the Sugababes.

Buena had four UK number one singles, six top-ten hits, and three multi-platinum albums with Sugababes.

After leaving the company in December 2005, she released Real Girl, her first solo album, in June 2007.

Buena's Sound of Camden: Mutya Buena was released in October 2010 as a compilation album dedicated to British singers.

Buena and her late Sugababes bandmates Donaghy and Buchanan announced their reunion on July 20th.

Early life

Buena was born in Kingsbury, London, and attended Kingsbury High School. Her father, who is partially Spanish, is a Filipino, and her mother is of English and Irish descent.

Personal life

Buena gave birth to her daughter Tahlia on March 23, 2005. On the Sugababes album, Three, Buena dedicated a song to her late sister Maya.

Buena lodged a lawsuit for the Sugababes name with the European Trademark Authority in March 2010. Although Buchanan and Donaghy's names appear on the trademark application, Buena was the sole applicant for the application, and Donaghy and Buchanan were not concerned. The fourth line-up sparked an objection on the grounds that the firm's goodwill and fame in the mark and trading name "Sugababes" related to the company, not an individual.

Buena has buttock implants and previously had breast enlargements. Buena had the implants removed in November 2013.

Buena was declared bankrupt by a High Court judge in September 2014. She chastised the media for failing to mention that she immediately paid off her £100,000 tax invoices when she first learned of her accountants' administrative mistake.

Career

The Sugababes were established in 1998 by Siobhán Donaghy, Keisha Buchanan, and Buena. One Touch, the band's debut album, debuted in November 2000 and peaked at number ten on the UK Albums Chart, before receiving a gold medal. One Touch produced four singles, three of which made it to the top of the charts, while the album's lead single "Overload" was nominated for a BRIT Award for "Best British Single." The album's sales did not correspond to that of London Records, and it was later discontinued. Angels with Dirty Faces, the group's second album, was released in August 2002 by Island Records. The album, which was influenced by the 1980s' new wave, dance, and pop music, enjoyed success in the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number two and went triple platinum. At the 2003 BRIT Awards, it was nominated for two number one singles and was nominated for "Best British Album."

Sugababes' third album, Three, was released in October 2003. It debuted at number three in the United Kingdom and launched four singles, none of which made it to the top ten. Taller in More Ways, the group's fourth album, was released in October 2005. In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number one and went double platinum. Buena had left the Sugababes on December 21, 2005. Buena debuted on her first album in early 2006 after separating with her previous company, Universal Island Records. She has also contributed to Groove Armada's album Soundboy Rock. "This Is Not Real Love" was Buena's first single to be released in the United Kingdom starring Buena. It was launched in November 2006 and ranked 15 in the United Kingdom. "Reality Girl," the album's title track, was released in early 2007. It debuted on number two in the United Kingdom and received a BRIT Award nomination for "Best Single" in honor of the BRIT Awards. "Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control)", her dance duo Groove Armada's collaboration in the UK in July 2007, ranked No. 8 in the UK. Buena received the Celebrity Big Brother 6 as a housemate on January 2, 2009. She walked out of the Big Brother house on day 15 of the series on January 16, 2009, the night before surviving eviction the same night. After both Buena and Buchanan tweeted that they were in the studio with "two other females" and British rapper Professor Green in January 2012, further rumors that the group would reunite were sparked. Buena later denied this on Twitter, saying, "No track [with] keisha or professor G who was around the studio." At this moment, I'm still working on my stuff. (sic)" Despite this, Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé revealed to MTV UK that she had written new songs for Buena, Buchanan, and Donaghy. "Yes, that is correct," she said. I've written about the Sugababes' original line-up, which makes me very happy because I just adored them when they first came out. Their music was so cool. It was very different, so I'm glad to have been involved in the entire Suffrage process. It's amazing." In April 2012, it was announced that the line-up had signed a £1 million record with Polydor Records. Buena regained control of the Sugababes name and reformed the band alongside original members Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy in September 2019. They appeared on a DJ Spoony album and announced that they would debut new music and tour in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the plans were later cancelled. In a Guardian story, she was ranked as #2 among the best girl band members of all time, second only to American singer Beyoncé.

In February 2020, she released the single "Black Valentine," on which she has writing credit, in collaboration with London-based pop duo Electric Pineapple. Later this year, she expressed an interest in the unveiling of an R&B album.
