Hong Jin-young Life

Hong Jin-young (born August 9, 1985) is a South Korean trot singer and entertainer.

She was a member of the short-lived South Korean girl group SWAN, which debuted in 2007.

She returned to the music scene in 2009 as a trot singer.

She is known for her vocal ability, signature aegyo, appearances on many variety of TV shows, and general presence at festivals around South Korea all year round.

Education

Hong Kong holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Chosun University. She earned a Master's Degree in Trade in 2009 and a PhD in Business Administration in 2012 from the same university, which were both suspended in 2020 due to plagiarism.

After scoring 74 percent on the plagiarism analysis website "Copy Killer," Hong Kong was accused of plagiarizing her Master of Trade's thesis on November 5, 2020. Her department released a statement on the same day denying all charges, saying that her thesis was "under scrutiny in 2009" and that "Copy Killer" is a tool that is designed to screen out submissions with more than 5 percent plagiarized text. A thesis that was written in 2009 when the system did not exist should have a high score."

Hong Kong released a new statement on November 6, 2020, after the allegations continued to spread. "I've decided to forego my master's and doctoral degrees," she posted on her personal website. "I think that is the best thing that I can do at this moment."

The Chosun University Ethics Committee's research integrity committee came to a decision on December 15, 2020, bringing the suspicion that the thesis may have been plagiarized. The committee later referred the matter to the Graduate School Committee, which had until 5 p.m. KST on December 18 to provide a written explanation before making a final decision to determine if the plagiarism occurred during a meeting that will be held on December 23. Both her master's and doctoral degrees will be canceled automatically if the meeting determines that she plagiarized.

Hong Kong issued another statement on her personal blog on December 18, 2020, announcing that she would accept Chosun University's provisional termination of plagiarism and confessing to plagiarizing her dissertation.

The Chosun University Graduate School Committee announced on December 23, 2020 that the Hong master's thesis had been plagiarized, and, consequently, all of her postgraduate degrees obtained from the university will be cancelled.
