Matthew Sheridan Cardle (born 15 April 1983) is an English singer and songwriter.

Cardle was born in Southampton and grew up in Halstead, Essex.

Cardle has been involved in music since his early teens and has been a member of two different bands; Darwyn and Seven Summers.

Cardle rose to fame after winning the seventh series of The X Factor, and received a £1 million recording contract with Syco Music and later signed a deal with Columbia Records. Following Cardle's victory on The X Factor, the winner's single and his debut single, "When We Collide", was released.

The track was made available to purchase on 12 December 2010, shortly after the show had ended.

On 19 December 2010, the track debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, as well as on the Irish Singles Chart.

The track also became the second biggest-selling single of 2010 with 815,000 copies sold within two weeks.

In June 2012, it had sold 1 million copies, the fourth single by an X Factor contestant to have done so."Run for Your Life" was the follow-up single released by Cardle which charted at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart.

Cardle went on to release his debut album, Letters, in 2011, which debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and the Irish Albums Chart.

The album saw two more singles released, "Starlight" and "Amazing".

Cardle then parted ways with record labels Syco Music and Columbia Records, and signed a recording contract with So What Recordings in early 2012.

He released his second studio album, The Fire, which charted at number eight on the UK Albums Chart.

In October 2013, Cardle released his third album, Porcelain, in association with Absolute Marketing as an independent release.

It reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart.

The lead single was a duet with Melanie C, called "Loving You", which was released on 18 August and reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart. Cardle is a guitarist, and plays frequently on tour and other performances.

He also plays other instruments including drums and piano.

He has toured the United Kingdom and Ireland on his Letters Tour in 2012, Unplugged Tour in 2013, Porcelain Tour in 2014 and Intimate and Live Tour in 2016.

Matt Cardle Career

Life and career

On the 15th of April 1983, Cardle was born in Southampton, Hampshire, to David and Jennifer Cardle (née Horner). Dominic, his older brother, with whom he has a close friend. Before heading to Essex, his family lived in Bristol. At the age of 11, he began playing guitar and writing songs and knew that music was what he wanted to do with his life from that point. He began singing lessons at this point, but he had to stop going after missing a class. He performed in bands and attended a summer band camp during his teens. He attended the University of Suffolk's free Stoke College and then took a music course at the University in Colchester. He then went on to complete a media course at Braintree College. Cardle spent a majority of his college years in skate parks rather than studying, and subsequently felt that education was not the right option for him. When he was a young adult, he applied for a music degree at Bournemouth University but he didn't make it. He said he was "probably rubbish at the time."

Cardle joined alternative rock/pop band Darwyn in 2005, and the band's album, When You Wake, was also released in 2006. The band has referred to themselves as an acoustic rock band. "Violet" and "When You Wake" were among the band's first albums. They were given an Arts Council England grant to film the EP Little Sunlight. The band appeared at many festivals, including the Stortford Music Festival and Brownstock Festival, and they also performed at the venue and recording studio in Essex. Ali McMillan, a member of Cardle and Darwyn, also performed as a duodie under the name Darwyn, playing acoustic cover versions of famous songs in and around Suffolk, and YouTube videos of them performing together have gathered a lot of attention.

Cardle, a lead singer and guitarist of the Seven Summers, joined them in 2009 as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band. In December 2009, the band appeared live on Sue Marchant's BBC radio show. In January 2010, they released their self-titled album. Alternative rock, pop, urban, and folk influences were present on the album. The album contained the songs "Youngblood," "Way to Be," and "Dirt" as a follow-up to "Picture of You," as well as the album's companion "Picture of You." Despite the fact that the band did not have a recording deal and released their music independently, they reached No.30 on the Official UK Independent Album Charts and No.11 for week ending 25 December 2010, and No.1 on the Official UK Independent Album Breakers Charts for week ending 25 December 2010. Following Cardle's success on The X Factor, the band saw a surge in fame, with their music videos receiving a large number of views on YouTube.

In 2010, Cardle auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor, performing Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good." He sang "The First Time I Saw Your Face," a performance that prompted Simon Cowell to wonder, "Why haven't we noticed him before?" on the Bootcamp stage of the show. "He's the biggest surprise of today for me," Louis Walsh says. When the age limit was lowered to 28 years old, Dannii Minogue was his mentor. Before the live shows until the end of the series, Cardle was expected to win with some of the lowest odds the show had ever seen. On his first live show, he performed "When Love Takes Over," which received high praise from all four judges. He performed "The First Time I Saw Your Face" again in week five, earning him the first standing ovation from all four judges of the series. With over 29 million views to date, it is his most watched performance on YouTube. He had to recover from a shady X Factor gig in London due to throat difficulties, causing him to miss the show that weekend. He performed a duet with Rihanna in the final.

After receiving 44.6 percent of the vote, Cardle was declared the winner on December 12, 2010. He received the most votes every week from week two, losing only to Mary Byrne in week 1. Cardle's cover version of "Many of Fear," which was originally released by Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro and renamed "When We Collide" on the UK Singles Chart, climbed to the top of the UK Singles Chart this week and stayed there for three weeks in a row. At the 2011 BRIT Awards, the song was selected in the Best British Single category. The song reached the one million sales mark in June 2012, making it the 123rd single to sell a million copies in the United Kingdom and fourth by an X Factor contestant. As of 31 December 2015, it is Ireland's fourth best-selling single of all time and the country's highest-succest single of the century so far.

Cardle remains a good friend with fellow contestant Aiden Grimshaw and mentor Dannii Minogue. Cardle signed a record deal with Columbia Music in a joint venture, making it the first The X Factor winner not to be exclusively signed to Simon Cowell's brand.

Cardle claims he watches the show in his spare time rather than appearing on The X Factor.

Cardle's debut album, Letters, would be released in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2011. As previous male X Factor winners haven't been particularly popular, Cardle's anxiety about announcing his album was debating, and female finalists Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke achieved a lot of success. When working on the album, Cardle collaborated with various writers, including Eg White and James Walsh. "Run for Your Life," Gary Barlow's album's first single, was premiered on The Chris Moyles Show on September 5, 2011. On September 1, Cardle appeared on the BBC Breakfast show to give a preview of the film. The video was then premiered in full on his YouTube channel on September 5th. The single was released on October 9, 2011, Cardle performed the song on The X Factor on the same day. On ITV2's show The Xtra Factor, he performed another track from the album, "All For Nothing." The UK Top 40 Charts' "Run for Your Life" reached its highest position on the UK Top 40 Charts. Prior to the album's release, Cardle went on a five-date tour that ended in London on October 3rd. Letters were released on October 17th, debuted on the UK Albums chart at number two and spent 16 weeks in a row.

On December 4, 2011, there was a second single, "Starlight," which was released on December 4th. It was supposed to be the first single before "Run for Your Life" was sent to him, and supporters and journalists alike responded well to it. Despite this, it only charted at number 185, but it did result in an album sales increase, with "Letters" returning to the top of the album charts shortly after "Starlight" was announced. The third and final single to be released from "Letters" was amazing, with a new song titled "All Is Said," written by Cardle with James Walsh, a new album of "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and a live version of the album track "Slowly" on sale. In February 2012, he began the Letters Tour, a sell-out tour. Hammersmith Apollo's tour ended on March 29, 2012. In September 2012, he said this was his favorite gig so far in his career.

Cardle revealed on Twitter on May 20 that he had left Columbia Records earlier this year. Cardle said in October 2012 that he left Sony through his own initiative because he wasn't a priority. "I would have been left to get to it," One Direction ruled the world." Which is amazing for them – I'm so proud of them – but I'm also selfish. I begged Sony to let me go, and they said okay." He later said that another reason for his departure was due to a lack of control he had with songs like "Run for Your Life" being released as his first single rather than "Starlight" which he'd written and preferred.

So What Recordings, a part of the Silva Screen Music Group, announced on September 9, 2012 that Cardle's second album, The Fire, would be released on October 29, 2012. "It's Only Love," Cardle's lead single, "It's Only Love" was posted online on Cardle's YouTube channel on September 11, 2012, as an audio only video. On October 3, the song's video premiered. Despite being advertised as the lead single, the song was not released as an exclusive product and was only available to buy at the same time as the album, and therefore did not make it to the singles chart. The Fire debuted at number 8 on the UK album charts, giving Cardle his second top ten album. He said the album is more like what he did before The X Factor than Letters, and it is more honest. "I'm getting closer to myself and getting back to what I do and what I've always done." On December 31, 2012, the artist "Anyone Else" was released as a second single. On Tuesday, Unplugged Tour was announced on Cardle's website. On December 12, tickets went on general sale, with some dates selling out on the first day. The tour ran across the United Kingdom and Ireland between April and May 2013.

Cardle revealed on Facebook on April 16, 2013 that he was in the process of releasing his third album. After Moving on from So What Recordings, Music Week revealed that he had collaborated with Absolute Marketing for the album, which is an independent release. Porcelain's name was revealed on August 19, 2013, with the release date set to October 28, 2013. It's been described as combining "everything from Rock, Funk, Soul, Gospel, Pop, Pop, and Blues" to produce his most musically diverse piece of work to date. On July 2, the first single, a duet with Melanie C, premiered on The Ken Bruce Show on BBC Radio 2 in Newcastle, Georgia. It was released on August 18, 2013 and received a positive response on the UK charts. On the single chart, it reached number 14 on the single chart, number 2 on the Independent charts, number 11 in the Scottish charts and top 50 in the Irish charts, and number 14 on the top 50. On October 13, 2013, a second single, "When You Were My Girl," was released. Cardle signed a worldwide publishing contract with BMG Chrysalis on October 8, 2013. On the UK Albums chart, Porcelain came in ranked eleventh. On February 25, 2014, he revealed that the album's next single would be "Hit My Heart."

At the Miss World 2013 in Bali, Indonesia, Cardle did a tribute to "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." On October 30, 2013, the Porcelain Tour in support of the album was announced, beginning in April 2014.

Cardle performed a free gig at the Portadown People's Park of Portadown, Northern Ireland, on June 20, 2014. The activity is part of the Peace Process in Northern Ireland and is financed and backed by the EU.

It was announced on May 11th that Cardle would take over Huey Calhoun's lead role in a Memphis production from 6 July 2015 to the end of its run in October. It was his first acting debut.

Cardle revealed in August 2014 that he was working on his fourth album. He took the Intimate and Live Tour, his summer tour, to market the new music and put it on display before recording. Following the tour, a limited edition live album from the tour was released shortly. Cardle explained that the longer-than-average gap between albums was because he was "running on empty" right before the release of his last album and that he needed to recharge. "The more relaxed aspect of the writing and recording process has been a revelation for me this time around." "I've had gaps where I've been able to live, recharge, and inspire," says the author. He describes it as a lot more electronic than his previous albums.

Time to Be Alive, his fourth album, was released by Sony on April 27, 2018. On March 13, 2018, BBC Radio 2's lead single "Desire" premiered.

Cardle returned to the West End on July 31, 2018, playing Wally Strand in Strictly Ballroom until it closes on October 27, 2018.

From 4 July to August 19, Cardle appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Barbican from 4 July to 24 August 2019.

He reunited with his ex band Seven Summers for a live show in Chelmsford later this year, and the pair have started to perform new music together.

Cardle, who moved to Swansea in 2019, revealed "Purple Crayon" on January 2021, just a few weeks before his fifth studio album was released on January 2021. On January 15, 2021, the album was released digitally. "Purple Crayon is a song about my battle with Valium and the relief I found by using it," Cardle says. The songs' emotions are intertwined with images from Harold and the Purple Crayon, my childhood favorite children's book. "We're the Butterflies" is Cardle's second single from his forthcoming album.
