Personal life
Jones was born at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, to a Flint Foundation Academy teacher. Ruth Jefferson Morris, Ruth Jefferson Morris, was raised by her grandmother Ruth Jefferson Morris.
Jones, who was only a child, began singing at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church at age five. She was classically trained, but gospel music is her current obsession. Jones had always aspired to become a singer.
She was homeschooled in Flint, then enrolled Flint Central High School, where she appeared in a play called Lead Poisoning in one of her first performances. Jones was a member of the Madrigal Singers while in high school, performing with one of the Madrigal Singers. Jones graduated in 1998 and attended the University of Michigan-Flint, majoring in music. She appeared in the role Godspell in college. In an Idol interview, Jones said Flint, Michigan, was her home. She was a single mother with a five-year-old daughter who encouraged her to try out for Idol.
Jones moved to Houston, Texas, where she lived for six years. One of her first jobs in Houston was as a secretary at Abundant Life Cathedral, a cathedral of 7,000 parishioners. Jones performed in the 70-member choir before coming to the church. Yolanda Adams, a well-known gospel singer, has been among the choir's members. Jones moved to Fort Meade, Maryland, in 2006, in order to be closer to her cousins and other relatives. Jones, who left Millersville, Maryland, to compete in American Idol, returned to Hollywood to work as a bank teller at Provident Bank.
