James Labrie Life

Kevin James LaBrie (born May 5, 1963) is a Canadian singer and songwriter best known as the lead singer of the American progressive metal band Dream Theater, which he has fronted since 1991.

Early life

Kevin James LaBrie was born in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada, and started playing drums at the age of five. He was a front man in many bands by the time he was in his mid-teens and/or drumming. He stopped playing drums at the age of 17 and 1981, when he was 18, he moved to Toronto.

Personal life

In several older interviews, LaBrie said he was Christian and actively followed the faith. However, in 2005, he confessed that he has since deviated from organized religion and now describes himself as a "more spiritual-directed individual."

In high school, LaBrie met Karen. They have been married for 33 years as of 2022.

James Labrie Career

Career

When they first launched a new lineup, LaBrie joined Coney Hatch in 1986. The band made a number of demonstration tapes in their rehearsal room and performed live in Ontario clubs for many months. In a last ditched effort at advancing without Carl Dixon, the band's record company (Anthem) expressed their disapproving of the lineup. That lineup was supposed to be short lived as well.

LaBrie became the vocalist for the glam metal band Winter Rose shortly after parting ways with Coney Hatch. Richard Chycki on guitar and bass, Randy Cooke on drums, and Sebastian Bach on vocals were among the band's members. Chycki had previously worked with Bach under the band names Sebastian and Hope. Bruce Dies and Rob Laid law, as guest artists, appeared on several demos between 1988 and 1989. Inside Out Music's 1989 compilation Inside Out Music's self-titled album. All of the songs on the album were written by Richard Chycki and James LaBrie, except two that Richard Chycki wrote alone.

LaBrie discovered that American progressive metal band Dream Theater was looking for a new singer, so he sent a tape and was quickly taken to New York for a complete audition. The tryout went well, and he was selected ahead of 200 other people to fill the band's full-time vocalist position.

LaBrie has since had a major influence on each Dream Theater album's vocal arrangements, but has had no influence on Dream Theater's instrumentation; 2011's A Dramatic Turn of Events includes LaBrie in the music credits on three songs. He has written or co-written lyrics for at least one of the fifteen albums Dream Theater has released with him, Images and Words, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, Dream Theater, and The Astonishing, which include none of these.

When asked by Prog-Sphere.com what is his favorite Dream Theater song to perform live, James says, "I love doing it live." And...well, Octavarium, the whole freakin' thing.

LaBrie has released five solo albums under various names (Mullmuzzler, James LaBrie's Mullmuzzler, and simply James LaBrie).

James LaBrie said in an interview with Beyond The Dark Horizon on June 12, 2010 that his upcoming solo album, Static Impulse, is in the mixing stages and will feature 12 tracks. "I'm really bloated and I'm excited," James said.

Static Impulse would be released on September 27, 2010 through Inside Out Music on July 27, 2010. It features longtime collaborator Matt Guillory on keyboards, Marco Sfogli (who also appeared on LaBrie's Elements of Persuasion) on guitars, Peter Wildoer of Swedish melodic death metal band Darkane on drums and screaming vocals, and Ray Riendeau on bass.

"The announcement of Static Impulse is something that the entire band is excited about," James LaBrie said. This is modern metal and as strong and relevant as any other band out there performing in a similar musical direction. There are riffs that will blow your head off and melodies that are both musically and vocally hypnotic. Let the ears bleed as you get into the driver's seat. Enjoy and support this debut, as well as a tour to follow up and assist this release.

In 2011, LaBrie said the US tour was postponed because it was so disorganized last time. That's why I wrote, 'You don't have the visas yet.' We're at a point where we're at; by the time you get the visas processed, we'll have one rehearsal and then we'll go out.' "I'm not doing that," I said.

Inside Out Music released LaBrie's album Impermanent Resonance in July 2013.

LaBrie has contributed to many other artists' albums as well as tribute albums throughout his career with Dream Theater. He sang background vocals on Fates Warning's Parallels album "Life in Still Water" in 1991, not long after joining Dream Theater (and before ever appearing on a Dream Theater recording). He has appeared on numerous Trent Gardner publications (including Leonardo: The Absolute Man and Explorer's Club), as well as appearing on albums by artists such as Shadow Gallery, Tim Donahue, and Frameshift.

In 2015, LaBrie performed the lead vocals for the main character in Ayreon's rock opera album The Human Equation; in 2015, he reprised his role in Ayreon's live version, The Theatre Equation. In the album The Source, he was also depicted as the character "The Historian."

LaBrie is also a featured vocalist on Henning Pauly's "Babysteps" project, which also stars John LeBrie, the arrogant doctor.

Since 2004, LaBrie has been associated with the True Symphonic Rockestra project, as well as Thomas Dewald, Vladimir Grishko, Dirk Ulrich, Christoph Wansleben, Sebastian Martinez, Marvin Philippi, and Igor Marin. Brainworx and Marinsound's album, Concerto in True Minor - 3 Rock Tenors, was released on iTunes and in Amazon on March 28, 2008.

In 2016, LaBrie was the special guest on the Last Union's debut album, which was originally intended to be titled "Most Beautiful Day." "President Evil," "Taken," and "A Place In Heaven" were three of his songs. The album was eventually titled "Twelve" and was eventually released on December 21, 2018. Over a two-year period, "Twelve" was written and pieced together.
