John Bush Career

Career

Bush began his singing career at Woodrow Wilson High School (Los Angeles) in 1979, fronting a short-lived rock band called "Reality Decoyal" Sandoval (lead guitar) and Gonzalo "Gonzo" Sandoval (drums), and bassist Joey Vera, as well as Woodrow Wilson High School alumni. They were all founding members of Armored Saint in 1982, as well as new lead guitarist Dave Prichard from South Pasadena High School.

Bush appeared in the Huey Lewis and the News' "The Heart of Rock & Roll" at 1:38 p.m. in 1984 (exiting from the limousine).

Armored Saint has released six full-length albums, one EP, a live album, a greatest hits compilation, and two DVDs, all with Bush on vocals.

In the early 1980s, Metallica invited Bush to perform with them as lead singer. Even after the introduction of Kill 'Em All, Metallica vocalist James Hetfield was left uncertain about his own singing abilities. Hetfield wanted to concentrate on his guitar and ordered Bush to join Metallica, but he refused. Bush was the only vocalist the band considered a frontman. He turned down the bid because he wanted to remain with Armored Saint. Bush claims that part of his Armored Saint loyalty stems from the band's making up of his closest childhood friends.

On the recording of Symbol of Salvation, original Armored Saint guitarist Dave Prichard died of leukemia in 1990. Jeff Duncan and the band completed the recording of Symbol of Salvation, with Prichard and the band going out on tour afterwards. Despite rave reviews from the metal press, the band decided that they did not want to go without Prichard and that they had amicably disbanded.

When Bush was a member of Anthrax, he collaborated with Armored Saint bassist Joey Vera in 1999. They decided against using the Symbol of Salvation for an Armored Saint reunion. In 2000, the resultant album Revelation was released, but a short tour was followed. In the two-disc set Nod to the Old School, Armored Saint released a series of demos, live tracks, and other unusualities over the next year. Win Hands Down in 2010, and Punching the Sky in 2020 have since released three more studio albums, La Raza in 2010, and Punching the Sky in 2020.

Following Armored Saint's dissolution in 1992, Bush received a call from Scott Ian of Anthrax, who gave Bush the opportunity to fill the role left vacant by singer Joey Belladonna, who had been suspended from the band. Bush accepted and joined the band, bringing alternative rock sensibilities to the party. The Threat Is Real With Bush in the 90s before going into a temporary hiatus in 1999. Despite Bush's reunion with Armored Saint during the same year, he remained an Anthrax member. Bush sang of his fourth album with the band, the critically acclaimed We've Come for You All in 2003. The WCFYA tour was chronicled on DVD with the title Music of Mass Destruction. With the then-current line, Anthrax released The Greater of Two Evils, a re-recording of several of the band's most popular songs from the pre-Bush period.

Anthrax's Among the Living lineup was reuniting in early 2005, according to a press release. Bush had not been fired, according to Anthrax, but with Joey Belladonna's return and talk of a new album in the works, it was unclear if Bush would record with them again. However, Joey Belladonna's departure from Anthrax in January 2007 fuelled rumors that Bush would return. However, Anthrax has chosen Dan Nelson, a new vocalist. During an interview in June 2007, Bush said he was not bitter about the Anthrax split, implying that they had invited him to participate in the reunion tour, which would have seen him and Belladonna split vocal duties, but that "it wasn't right" for him. Following Belladonna's departure, he was encouraged by the band to re-join, who said: "I couldn't go back and say, 'Here I am...' It's like coming in with my tail between my legs, and that's not right for me." I couldn't do it because I was too lazy to do it. It didn't feel right to do so. It was about your soul, not your gut.

How does that feel?

Does it feel right?

It's just right. Sold. "Answer" is the question that comes first.

Bush revived his former bandmates in Anthrax after they parted out with their replacement singer Dan Nelson in August 2009 at the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth, England. Following his success, there had been several calls for him to return full time. On October 17, 2009, Bush appeared with Anthrax at the Loud Park '09 Festival in Japan, followed by five concerts on the Soundwave tour in Australia in February 2010.

It was announced on December 14, 2009, that the "Big Four" thrash bands would perform in Poland and Czech Republic during the following year, as well as many other shows during the Sonisphere festival. Anthrax had been expected that it would remain with Bush, but the other participants decided to rejoin Joey Belladonna as Bush was not up for recommitting to the organisation full time. Belladonna has since toured and recorded again.

Bush caused some minor controversies in September 2015 after going public about Anthrax's royalty problems, including Anthrax: "They've had a lot — a lot — of accounting and management problems that were affecting me personally." Dan Spitz has a problem with the band [...] he claims he hasn't been compensated by the band. With Anthrax, the dude set seven records. Also, the dude should be compensated for those recordings he made with the band. [...] It's like, I'm out there signing Anthrax records I made. I just want to be compensated for the [that] were] made and sold. And it gives me a great deal of pride in those records. And if you don't get paid, you become very angry about it, and it isn't cool." However, he did announce that the band had a new accounting firm and that "they seem to be on the up and up right now."

Nonetheless, he was compelled to respond to his remarks on Armored Saint's Facebook page after fans mocked Anthrax for not paying Bush, saying, "In hindsight, I would have preferred to keep this between myself and the members of Anthrax." He had royalties from the band but that they had been "inconsistent," before revealing himself "Done with this subject."

Bush has worked with Burger King in order to gain commercial voiceovers.

Long Distance Calling, a German instrumental rock band, released a self-titled full-length album in April 2011, which features John Bush on vocals for the track "Middleville." The only track on the album with vocals is "Middleville."

Metallica's 30th anniversary show in December 2011 featured many guests, including Bush, who joined Metallica onstage to perform "The Four Horsemen," a song from Kill 'Em All in which Bush took the lead vocal just as Hetfield had intended him to do nearly three decades ago. After the performance, drummer Lars Ulrich said, "It could have been a whole different story" and expressed in awe at Bush's appearance: "Wow!"

Bush sang of the 2013 action video game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. On the tracks "Return to Ashes" and "The Hot Wind Blowing," he appears. Bush performed vocals on Metal Allegiance's 2018 album Volume II – Power Drunk Majesty's "Bound by Silence" on the track "Bound by Silence." He appeared on David Ellefson's album Sleeping Giants in 2019, supplying lead vocals for the track "If You Were God."
