Mike Mangini Career

Early life and career

Mangini, a Boston boy from Newton, Massachusetts, began playing the drums when he was two and a half years old, being inspired by Ringo Starr of The Beatles. He would train two to four hours a day, and by the time he was nine years old, he was already imitating Buddy Rich's appearances. Bobby Colomby, Danny Seraphine, John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Terry Bozzio are among the many influences.

By high school, he was playing in bands and performing in the prestigious All-State and All-Eastern United States ensembles.

Mangini, who graduated from Waltham Senior High School in 1981, dropped his music studies to pursue a computer science degree at Bentley University. After graduating, he began writing for the Patriot Missile project. He was also working on a project that looked at the brain's interaction with the body.

Mangini appeared in 1987 for one of his first high-profile appearances, playing drums for Boston's Rick Berlin Band. This will be his first collaboration with bassist Philip Bynoe. During this period, he also taught drums privately in Boston.

Mangini joined Annihilator, a thrash metal band, and he appeared on several tracks for the band's album Set the World on Fire. He continued to tour with the band in favor of this album until 1994. He joined Boston's hard rock band Extreme the year after, replacing original drummer Paul Geary. Mangini appeared on three songs on Extreme's 1995 album Waiting for the Punchline, and on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Mike was alerted by drummer Jonathan Mover that guitarist Steve Valiant was auditioning drummers for his live band after Extreme disbanded in 1996. Mike auditioned for Vain's band and moved to Los Angeles. Mangini was the highly regarded drummer of Valiant's live band, from 1996 to 2000, which also included bassist Philip Bynoe, guitarist Mike Keneally, and guitarist Dave Weiner, who appeared on stage from late 1996 to early 2000. Mangini appeared on Vain's studio albums Fire Garden and The Ultra Zone, as well as the live album Alive in an Ultra World.

Mangini returned to Boston, where he worked as an associate professor at Berklee College of Music, during a hiatus on Vain's Ultra Zone tour in 2000. Gary Cherone, the ex Extreme frontman, and bassist Pat Badger also formed Tribe of Judah. During this period, Mangini appeared on other albums, including a Rush tribute album titled Submittivisions and his second and third Annihilator albums titled Both for You and Metal. Sal DiFusco, Bill Lonero, and Chris Emerson also recorded tracks for artists Sal DiFusco, Bill Lonero, and Chris Emerson.

Mangini accepted a full-time teaching position at Berklee College of Music in the Percussion Department in 2005. He resigned in 2010 after joining Dream Theater.
