John Petrucci Life

John Peter Petrucci (born July 12, 1967) is an American guitarist, composer, and producer.

He is best known as a founding member of the Dream Theater, a progressive metal band.

Mike Portnoy, his ex bandmate, created all Dream Theater albums from 1999's Metropolis Pt.

2: Scenes from a Memory to 2019's Distance Over Time.

Since Portnoy's demise in 2010, he has been the sole producer of the band's albums.

Petrucci was selected as the third performer on the G3 Tour seven times, more than any other invited guitarist.

Petrucci takes second place in Joel McIver's 2009 book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists Ranks Second, behind Dave Mustaine.

GuitarOne magazine also ranked him as one of the "Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time."

According to a Guitar World magazine reader's poll, Petrucci was ranked as the 17th greatest guitarist of all time in 2012.

Early life and influences

John Peter Petrucci was born in Kings Park, New York, on July 12, 1967, to an Italian American family. He picked up the guitar around age eight because his older sister was able to go to bed later in order to play the organ. However, when his attempts to stay up late were unsuccessful, he decided to quit the guitar. At the age of 12, he picked up the guitar for the first time. Petrucci confessed to playing guitar six hours a day, when he discovered it was his passion. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and later became interested in progressive rock and heavy metal, which was exemplified by Rush, Yes, Iron Maiden, Dixie Dregs, and Metallica.

Personal life

Petrucci and his partner Rena Sands, a guitarist in the all-female heavy metal band Meanstreak, live in St. James, New York, and the three children have three children. Jake Bowen, a guitarist in the Periphery's progressive metal band Periphery, is uncle.

Petrucci is a big fan of bodybuilding and devotes a considerable portion of his free time to weight training. He is a voting member of NARAS.

In a Dream Theater Q&A session with DreamTheaterForums, Dream Theater bandmate Jordan Rudess revealed in an interview that Petrucci is a practicing Catholic and Petrucci himself told about it.

Kevin Moore, his childhood friend and future Dream Theater keyboardist, eventually accepted Petrucci to join his cover band. Petrucci and his childhood buddy John Myung (bass), who was a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they met future bandmate Mike Portnoy (drums). Although in Berklee they often covered two of their major influences, Iron Maiden and Rush. The band Majesty was made up of these three members in lieu of Kevin Moore. The group later became Dream Theater because there was already another band with the same name.

Although Petrucci is best known for Dream Theater, he is also in the Liquid Tension Experiment, and has appeared on recordings by other artists, such as the Explorer's Club's Age of Impact album.

Petrucci has released a guitar instructional video called Rock Discipline, which discusses warm-up exercises, lifting, chords, and other techniques for improving one's guitar playing. Petrucci's Wild Stringdom, "Guitar World Presents John Petrucci's Wild Stringdom," was also published in a book that was compiled from columns he wrote for Guitar World magazine under that heading.

Joe Satriani and Steve Vain invited Petrucci and Steve Vain to tour with them on the famous G3 guitar tour, which brought him to a large number of new followers and inspired a solo album. Suspended Animation, a film that appeared on March 1, 2005, was available for purchase from his web site. Petrucci has appeared on the 2005 and 2006 G3 tours, as well as in 2007, when touring the G3 Tour for the second time with Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani. Petrucci revealed in a video with Larry DiMarzio that he is working on a sequel to his 2005 album, Suspended Animation, and a new Dream Theater collection.

Petrucci also wrote and performed two original soundtrack songs for Sega's game titled Digital Pinball: Necronomicon. Both tracks are about two minutes long and are titled simply Prologue and Epilogue. Johnny James, the Dream Theater players' changing instruments for encores, was used in a spoof rock band called Nightmare Cinema (which was the Dream Theater members' changing instruments for encores).

Petrucci was invited along with Steve Morse in 2012 to join Joe Satriani on the G3 tour for the second time. Dave LaRue, a bassist, and Dream Theater bandmate Mike Mangini joined him.

Petrucci joined Joe Satriani on the G3 tour in 2018. Uli Jon Roth on the European leg of the tour and Phil Collen in North America were accompanied by Phil Collen. In 2020, Terminal Velocity, his second solo album, was released. For the first time since the drummer left Dream Theater in 2010, Petrucci's first solo album in 15 years reunited him with Mike Portnoy.
