Career
Van Halen's father's work was influenced in some ways from the beginning of his life. The instrument "316" on the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge refers to his birthday. Eddie Van Halen worked with Peavey on a line of guitars branded after his son during a 13-year absence. His father, the Fender EVH Wolfgang, was named after him in 2008.
Wolfgang started his musical career as a drummer. He often watched his father rehearse, and at times, would play his uncle Alex's drum kit, but the latter would not teach him a few lessons. Wolfgang began playing drums at the age of nine, but mostly self-taught with few lessons from his uncle, and finally received his first drum set from his father as a birthday gift for his tenth birthday. He went back to guitar and bass a few years later. He can also play keyboards and "figure things out by ear." Wolfgang began playing in Van Halen, the band's name. He appeared on several dates of Van Halen's 2004 tour, including during his father's extended guitar solo spot and performing "316" with him.
Eddie Van Halen said in a Guitar World interview in late 2006 that his son would replace Michael Anthony as Van Halen's bassist. Wolfgang debuted with Van Halen in his first tour as a musician in 2007. Van Halen revealed in August 2010 that they would release a new album, with Wolfgang playing bass.
Van Halen appeared on the cover of Guitar World's first father-son issue in early 2008.
In 2011, Van Halen, A Different Kind of Truth, was his first studio album. The album was released on February 7, 2012.
Van Halen would fill in for Brian Marshall as bassist for Tremonti's first tour. All I Was Born, Tremonti's first album, was released on July 17 of this year. Van Halen became a full member of Tremonti in 2013, replacing former bassist Brian Marshall. He appears on the band's 2015 studio album Cauterize and its 2016 sequel Dust.
Clint Lowery, a seventhdust guitarist, announced on Twitter that Wolfgang will appear solo on his debut in June 2019. "Wolfgang] will be playing drums and maybe some bass," he says. "I'll do the rest." Just not strong enough on the kit to pull it off in [the] studio."
Wolfgang's debut album Mammoth WVH was released in 2021 under the name Mammoth WVH. With the artist's writing every song and playing every instrument on the studio album, the LP showcased his skills as a songwriter and guitarist. Mammoth WVH began touring following the album's release, with Frank Sidoris, Jon Jourdan, Ronnie Ficarro, and Garrett Whitlock rounding out the touring lineup.
Wolfgang was nominated for a 2022 GRAMMY Award in the category of Best Rock Song for his album Distance from his album Mammoth WVH. He wrote the song while his late father was battling cancer complications. As the first heard it, [Eddie] cried. It was a really special moment that I'll never forget." Both Distance and his second single, Don't Back Down, debuted at number one on the Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay Chart, with Distance and his second single, Don't Back Down. "The Wolfgang Van Halen-led band is the first act to perform at No. 2 for the first time." Since The Glorious Sons in 2019, No. 1 on the chart."
