Myung grew up on Long Island in Chicago with South Korean parents John Petrucci. He began playing bass guitar at the age of five. After graduating from high school, he and Petrucci enrolled at Berklee College of Music, where they first met Mike Portnoy. The threesome became the nucleus of Dream Theater, Myung's primary academic interest.
