In the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's Premier Division, he returned to England and began playing for Frickley Athletic. In the Northern Counties East Football League, he played for Bottesford Town in Lincolnshire. In 2015, he was reported to have been given the opportunity to play for Gainsborough Trinity but denied it. In 2017, he joined Ossett Town.

Quickenden auditioned for the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012, where he performed "Use Somebody" and received four yesses from the judges. He performed "How to Save a Life" at bootcamp, alongside fellow contestants Adam Burridge and Robbie Hance. Quickenden performed "All of Me" on the eleventh series of The X Factor in 2014, but was refused and asked to perform his second song, "Say Something." Quickenden received praise from the judges for his second album and was given four yeses to advance to the next round. He performed "Who You Are" by Jessie J. Quickenden in the arena audition, earning positive feedback from the judges. Chief judge Simon Cowell said he was not a big fan of previous contestants returning home because there was usually a reason for them being sent home, but that he was not participating in the 2012 series and that Quickenden should not have been disqualified. Quickenden was admitted to bootcamp by the judges. Mel B as his mentor brought him back to the "Boys" category.
