Dong Young-bae (Korean: 동영배; born May 18, 1988), better known by his stage names Taeyang (meaning "sun" in Korean) and SOL (when performing in Japan), is a South Korean singer, songwriter and dancer.

After appearing in Jinusean's music video "A-yo," Taeyang began training under YG Entertainment at the age of 12.

Six years later, he made his debut in 2006 as a member of the South Korean boy band Big Bang.

While the quintet's debut was met with lukewarm receptions, their follow-ups cemented their popularity, becoming one of the best-selling digital group of all-time in Asia and one of the best-selling boy bands in the world.Following the release of several albums and extended plays with his group, Taeyang pursued a solo career in 2008, releasing his first extended play, Hot.

The EP was acclaimed by critics, and went to win the award for Best R&B & Soul Album at the 6th Korean Music Awards.

Hot was followed by his first full-length studio album, Solar (2010), that garnered sales of over 100,000 copies.

His second studio album, Rise (2014), peaked at number 112 on the US Billboard 200, becoming the highest ranking album by a Korean soloist in the chart, while its lead single, "Eyes, Nose, Lips", peaked at number one on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100, giving him his first solo chart-topper on that chart.

"Eyes, Nose, Lips" was awarded Song of the Year at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards and 29th Golden Disc Awards.

His third studio album, White Night, was released in 2017.

Taeyang Career

Career

Dong Young-bae's first exposure to music was playing the piano, where he loved classical music performed by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. Dong saw the need for a job to help their families at a young age when they were struggling financially. He auditioned and won the role of "mini Sean" in Jinusean's music video "A-yo," where he was introduced to hip hop music and became captivated with hip hop music. Dong met Yang Hyun-suk, the founder of the record company YG Entertainment, on the occasion and begged him for the opportunity to be a singer. Since he wasn't able to answer him, he went to his office specifically to fulfill his goal. Yang gave him the opportunity to audition, where he was successful, and he was accepted by the record label as a trainee. He met fellow trainee and future bandmate Kwon Ji-yong while on vacation in Hong Kong. Dong spent the first two years as a trainee sweeping the studio for the other artists in the company and fetching water bottles during dance performances, but later admitting that new artists weren't all inclusive toward him or Kwon. In singer Wheesung's single "Player" on the latter's second album, Dong provided the rap verse.

Despite the fact that Dong was supposed to debut with Kwon as the hip hop duo GDYB (with Kwon choosing the stage name G-Dragon), the scheme was shelved by their record label. Rather, they were joined by four other trainees (TOP, Daesung, Seungri, and Hyun-seung) to form the group Big Bang, which eventually became a family. Their formation was chronicled on television, but Hyun-Seung's initial appearance was disregarded and their final lineup consisted of five members months before they were announced on television. Dong was initially concerned about being in a band, but eventually warmed up to the other members. "The sun is the brightest star from the infinite stars of the universe," Taeyang dropped the idea of rapping in favour of singing.

Big Bang's first album, Big Bang Vol., follows the release of several single albums. a teen's first solo album "Ma Girl" was a modest success since 2007, which also included Taeyang's first solo album "Ma Girl." The group's debut of "Lies" (Korean: Reformed Romanization: Geojitmal) from their first extended play Always (2007) has had a commercial success. "Last Farewell" (Korean) was followed by "Mega) (Korean; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru) from Stand Up (2008); both were chart-toppers.

Taeyang announced that he would release a solo album after contributing to singer Lexy's album. The project was originally scheduled for a September launch but was postponed due to a lack of resources with his organization. Rather, Taeyang released the EP Hot in May 2008, backed by a production team that included 1TYM's Teddy Park, Yang Hyun Suk, Kush, and his fellow member G-Dragon. Taeyang's album included mainly R&B songs, indicating that it was his "main focus" despite the Hip-Bang's hip-hop style. He expressed disappointment with the album but also admitting that he did not write any of the songs. He later announced that he would do so in the future to fully express and incorporate his thoughts and ideas into his music. "Only Look at Me" (Korean: Revised Romanization: Naman Barabwa), an R&B song written by Teddy and Kush, and "Prayer (Korean: Revised Romanization: Teddy)" featured Teddy. Both promotional and promotional videos were shot. He also staged his first solo performance, the Hot Concert Series, in support of his album. Two awards were given to Taeyang from the 7th Korean Music Awards: Best R&B/Soul Song for "Only Look at Me" and Best R&B/Soul Album for Hot.

Taeyang was instrumental in the majority of 2009's company's success. After promotional work came to an end, he returned to the studio to record new solo songs. Two digital singles were released: "Where U At" and "Wedding Dress" were among the promotional videos. On an online music survey for a Dutch radio station, the latter single ranked third.

Solar's first full-length album was released in two versions: a "Regular Version" and a "Deluxe Version." The regular edition had eleven songs, while the deluxe edition, which was limited to only 30,000 copies, featured 13 songs, including "Only Look at Me" and "Prayer" from Hot. On the first day of introduction, the "Deluxe Version" was sold out. Two singles were announced for promotions: "I Want a Girl" and "I'll Be There." Taeyang contributed to the group's success by composing, co-writing four songs ("Solar," "Where U At," "Wedding Dress," and "Take It Slow"), as well as writing lyrics for "Take It Slow." At the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards, Taeyang received the "Best Male Artist" award. Both the regular and the deluxe versions of the Gaon Album Chart reached their top position on the Gaon Album Chart.

For their Korean EPs Tonight (2011) and Alive (2012), as well as the Japanese studio album Alive (2012), Taeyang took two years to record new materials and participate in advertising campaigns with Big Bang. As school resumed, he turned his attention to preparing for his second studio album. The single "Ringa Linga" was released in November 2013, the first album to follow in 2014. Although he used Teddy Park, G-Dragon, and Choice37, Taeyang himself participated in its production, releasing six tracks. "Ringa Linga" choreography earned several articles on YouTube, including label-mates Akdong Musician, Tablo, Lydia Paek, Korean singer Eric Nam, and Canadian pop star Michael Bublé. Yoo Jae-suk, a comedian, has also parodied it on the popular variety show Infinite Challenge. "Eyes, Nose, Lips" was South Korea's second best-performing single of 2014.

Taeyang started on the Rise World Tour in honor of the album, visiting 9 countries and 16 cities in Asia in August 2014. The tour came to an end in early 2015 with a crowd of over 100,000 people. Taeyang received Best Male Artist, Best Vocal Performance, and Song of the Year for his album "Eyes, Nose, Lips" at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

In November 2014, Taeyang collaborated with G-Dragon to release the single "Good Boy" for YG Entertainment's latest hip hop project. The song received critical feedback, with Fuse naming it one of the year's best songs of the year, and debuting at number one on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart for the third time a Korean act topped the charts and first for a male group. Together with bandmate G-Dragon, Taeyang appeared in the biennial Infinite Challenge music festival in 2015. The pair collaborated with ZE:A's Hwang Kwanghee to produce the album "Mapsosa," which peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. He appeared on Mnet's Show Me The Money as a featured musician on labelmate Song Min-ho's album "Fear," produced by Zico during the semi-finals, which became one of the year's best-selling singles.

Taeyang is currently working on his latest album, as well as solo concerts, as well as solo shows. With stadium concerts in Japan, Taeyang started his second world tour, White Night, in Japan. The album debuted at number three on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart, with over 57,000 copies sold in August.

Taeyang will be eligible to vote on Mix Nine's upcoming JTBC survival audition program. Along with CL and Oh Hyuk, Taeyang was named as one of the cast members of tvN's latest variety series, Livin' the Double Life.
