Victoria Monet Career

Career

Monét's interest outside of dance rehearsals began exchanging poetry with an older cousin and discovering a new passion. She began writing her own songs soon after. During that time, she had been researching into the production industry, learning about producers, and performing live at a local recording studio. She heard about Rodney Jerkins (aka Darkchild) and decided to add him to Myspace. She was invited to Los Angeles and audition for a new girl group called Purple Reign, which was shortly after. A year later, the group signed a record with Motown, but it was not released any music before. Monét turned to songwriting to make money after the group's demise, while waiting for her own music career to develop. Last Train to Paris, Diddy Money's 2010 album, was the first song she performed on. She continued to write song hooks and performed the demos herself before releasing them out. She hoped that the labels would like her version enough that they would keep her on the show as a feature.

Craig Kallman, the CEO of Atlantic Records, heard one of her demos in a meeting and offered her a record contract later that day. Even though she was signed, Monét confessed that her songwriting "took off" before her debut, even though she was living on both directions. During the early stages of her career, her songwriting became her main income stream. Monét's debut EP Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1 was released on October 30, 2014, and her follow-up EP Nightmares & Lullabies was released on June 17, 2015 under Atlantic Records' Act 2. Monét chose the name because it reflected the EP's tone: a dark beat mixed with soft melodies.

Monét released "Better Days" with Ariana Grande following the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile and the Dallas Police shooting.
