Baek Ayeon (born March 11, 1993) is a South Korean singer and songwriter who has performed under Eden Entertainment.

She is best known as the second runner-up contestant of K-pop Star.

Early life and education

Baek was born in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, on March 11, 1993. She underwent cancer treatment in her fifth year of elementary school. She is presently enrolled in the Department of Practical Music at Howon University.

Career

Baek appeared on the first season of competition television show K-pop Star. She was one of the top three contestants alongside Park Ji-min and Lee Hi. Since being turned down by a string of entertainment companies trying to recruit her, she was approached by a number of entertainment companies attempting to hire her. Baek eventually joined JYP Entertainment, the parent of K-pop Star judge JYP.

I'm Baek, Baek's debut EP, was released on September 10, 2012, with five songs on the album, including the lead single "Sad Song." Baek performed "Stay" and "Sad Song" on September 16, her official debut on Inkigayo's music program Inkigayo.

Baek's first original soundtrack "Daddy Long Legs" for the SBS drama Cheongdam-dong Alice premiered on December 15, excluding Julia.

"Introduction to Love," MBC's drama "When a Man Falls in Love" in April 2013. Baek's second EP, A Good Girl, was released on June 17, 2013, with the lead single "A Good Boy." For the MBC's drama Goddess of Fire OST, she recorded "Tears Are Also Love" one month later.

"The Three Things I Have Left" for the SBS drama Angel Eyes was released in May 2014. She debuted "Morning of Canon," MBC's "You Are My Destiny" two months later.

On May 20, 2015, Baek released "Shouldn't Have" (featuring Day6's Young K) her first single and first self-composed song. A month after the song was announced in front of fierce competition, it went to become a sleeper hit on several Korean music real-time charts. Following the success of the album, she began promoting it on music radios, beginning with Show! Core Music Core was born on June 13. She appeared on the SBS drama "So We Are" later this year.

Baek's digital single album in May 2016 featured lead track "So-So," written and produced by herself, as well as side track "Something to Say." "So-So" followed the success of "Shouldn't Have," securing the top spot on all major Korean music charts within a day of its launch. "Just Because" was released on November 30th, her holiday single, after which she mocked Got7's JB.

Bittersweet, Baek's third EP, was released on May 29, 2017, sparking the media to coin the phrase "May Queen" for her regularity in releasing music during that month. The EP featured six songs, with lead single "Sweet Lies" starring vocal trio The Barberettes. Despite the fact that Bittersweet did not have the same success chart-wise as its predecessors, the album was praised for its consistency with Billboard, with Billboard naming it among their top five critic's picks of the K-pop albums of the year.

Dear Me, Baek A Yeon's fourth EP, was released on November 21, 2018 with the lead single "Sorry To Myself" and five other songs. She was revealed to have earned a role in Korea's first virtual reality (VR) film "Anna, Mari," which earned the 2018 "VR Frontier Content Project" by Korea's Korea Creative Content Agency.

Baek A Yeon's JYP Entertainment deal came to an end on September 16, 2019. She decided not to renew her deal and left the company, not to return it. On December 7, she announced that she had joined Eden Entertainment on a formal basis.

Baek A Yeon was supposed to release her fifth EP, Observe, on July 13, 2021, but it was postponed due to increasing incidences of COVID-19 in Korea. It was later announced that the new release date would be September 7.

The track "DOCTOR," which was included in the Pokémon Exhibition Track, was released on August 17, 2022, by Baek.

Baek has renewed his deal with Eden Entertainment, as reported on October 21, 2022.
