Musical career
Fletcher began writing music at a young age, particularly at the age of 14. He tried to audition for band Busted but lost out on the spot to Charlie Simpson after the record company Island Records decided that the band should be a trio rather than a four-piece; Fletcher claims he was in the band "for about 24 hours." This led to a job with the band's songwriting staff, primarily because of the band's intrigue with his writing skills. Fletcher learned about Busted band member James Bourne, which would then result in a fruitful songwriting collaboration between the two bands. Since being able to plan a pop hit, Bourne has said that it was him.
Fletcher asked by the record company if he was available to film auditions for a new band, V. Unlike the expected, all-sing, all-dancing boy band for which they were intended, the band was formed in Busted's second album, A Present for Everyone. Fletcher, who was captivated by Jones' style, invited him to write with him and Bourne. As the writing projects for Busted came to an end, the two musicians began working with their own (as yet unidentified) band and then moved to the InterContinental Hotel in London to concentrate on writing together. Fletcher and Jones produced the majority of their first album, Room on the 3rd Floor, during this time together. Dougie Poynter and drummer Harry Juddd were subsequently recruited through a classified advertisement. After Marty McFly, the main character from his favorite film Back to the Future, Fletcher came up with the idea to name the band. After Busted helped them launch by inviting them to be the first act on their tour in March 2004, McFly came to fame.
McFly made it into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2004, beating the Beatles' record for "the youngest band to have a debut album go straight to number one." With occasional contributions from Judd, Fletcher has written the majority of McFly's songs; Bourne has also assisted with songwriting on occasion. McFly has five studio albums and two compilation albums as of November 15, 2010. Memory Lane: The Best of McFly, a collection of B-sides from earlier albums, original demos of well-known artists, as well as three new singles, was released in November 2012. Fletcher, in addition to being the founding member of McFly, performs rhythm guitar, shares lead vocals with Danny Jones, and occasionally assumes the role of ukulele player and pianist.
"Crashed the Wedding" and "Who is David?" Fletcher has written or co-written ten UK number-one singles: "Who's David?" "Assembly" and "Thunderbirds" for Busted; and "Five Colors in Her Hair" for McFly. He co-wrote eight of the songs on A Present for Everyone, as well as all but one (Not Alone), written by Jones) of McFly's debut album, Room on the 3rd Floor. He is the primary writer on the majority of tracks on all five of the band's albums. He has "the most songwriting credits and, therefore, the most money" among McFly's four members.
"On a Rainbow," the official song of the 2012 Summer Olympics' mascots Wenlock and Mandeville, Fletcher, wrote. He and his sister Carrie Hope Fletcher appear on the album, as well as his brother. He produced the song "I Want" on One Direction's debut album Up All Night, and co-wrote "Don't Forget Where You Belong" for their third album Midnight Memories, as well as "Don't Forget Where You Belong" (with Dougie Poynter and Danny Jones). He has co-written several songs with James Bourne, including "Chills in the Evening," which was released by V. He also co-wrote "High Hopes" with all four members of the Vamps for their debut album, Meet the Vamps. In addition, Fletcher is credited with co-writing the 5 Seconds of Summer song "Touch Hard" by the Fletchers. The song first appeared on YouTube on June 1, 2013, and it was compared as a B-Side to their hit song "Don't Stop" in 2014. "Own This Town" was also written by him with the British band Chapter 13 for their Britain's Got Talent semi-final performance.
