Todrick Hall (born April 4, 1985) is an American singer, writer, actor, producer, choreographer, and YouTuber.

He first made national news on the ninth season of the reality singing competition American Idol, where he made it to the semi-finals.

Following this, he amassed a following on YouTube, with numerous viral videos including original songs, parodies, and skits.

In 2015, MTV premiered a documentary series titled Todrick about his video-making process. Hall became a resident choreographer on RuPaul's Drag Race and occasional judge beginning with season 8.

Early life and education

Todrick Hall was born in Plainview, Texas, on April 4, 1985, a farming community in the state's panhandle. He was raised by a single parent until she married as a child, and then when he had a brother and stepfather, he was attracted to them. The family will return to Dallas later this year.

He adored The Wizard of Oz as a child. He'll be the creator of Oz, the musical; the pop hit The Wizard of Ahhhs starring the pop a cappella quintet Pentatonix; and the visual album and tour Straight Out of Oz. Hall was led by an elementary teacher in Dallas to the theater, the orchestra, and ballet.

Hall is gay and lived out to his family when he was 15 years old. He began performing on weekends at Six Flags Over Texas' amusement park; this was the first time he combined singing and dancing. He has appeared on cruises with Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Hall has attributed his work ethic to a lack of opportunities for him as a black gay man in the entertainment industry.

Personal life

Hall came out as gay at the age of fifteen and has stated a desire to be a role model for LGBTQ individuals and people of color.

In May 2021, Hall revealed an interest with model David Borum via Instagram.

Many former dancers and collaborators on Hall's YouTube videos and pictures accused him of never compensating them for their jobs. Hall has refuted these allegations. Hall's former assistant reported that Hall was complicit in a sexual harassment lawsuit and that he observed predatory conduct. Following Hall's tumultuous appearance on Celebrity Big Brother in 2022, the allegations were reiterated.

Career

When Hall was 20 years old, he auditioned for Oprah Winfrey and Fantasia Barrino's Broadway production The Color Purple. For the role of Harpo, he was both actor and understudy. Barrino rose to fame as the champion of the third season of the reality singing competition American Idol, and it was her role that inspired Hall to perform again. He appeared in Memphis after The Color Purple's appearance on Broadway: Beauty and the Beast, the Rockettes' musical and touring productions, and Hairspray.

Hall has migrated to Los Angeles, where he resides in a four-story "nondescript three-story home in the Hollywood Hills." In May 2006, he joined YouTube and made over 300 videos in the next five years. "A funny clip of him singing his order to a McDonald's drive-through speaker (complete with backup artists)" was his first video, which was shot while still living in Texas. The video has since been watched over ten million times. In 2008, he posted a video of a "Hard to Say Goodbye" performance, which increased his followers to two million. In 2011, YouTube became a full-time job for Hall. "how I can write a song, design the ideas, execute them, direct, choreograph, and do hair and makeup," he says. Many of his popular films were based on later concert tours, such as "Twerk Du Soleil" and the "Toddlerz Ball."

Hall auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol in Dallas, Texas, in August 2009. Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, and guest judge Joe Jonas performed a self-composed song mentioning the judges to support his admission into the program. Hall said the audition song was his "fondest memory" from his time in Idol. All four players were supportive of his participation; he went to Hollywood week and then the semi-finals. In the Top 24 he performed Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and "What's Love Got to Do With It" in the Top Twenty and Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It." On March 11, 2010, he was cut from the Top 16 after his interpretation of Queen's "Somebody to Love;" he was one of four contestants disqualified in the final round, and ranked between 13th and 16th overall. "Wantant" would not refer to anything beyond a Broadway actor," Judge Simon Cowell told Hall. Later Hall confessed to hiding his sexuality on the program: he regretted it: he had a girl wait for his post-audition walk outside with his golden ticket.

Hall performed in the musical Memphis in August 2010. Hall claims that his Broadway performances were less stressful because he was an employee who did his job before being banned from doing so. As a producer, he was responsible for every facet of production.

Hall's following has increased dramatically since June 2019, with 3.1 million followers on YouTube as of June 2019, and his videos have been watched 531.9 million times as of March 2018. Many of Hall's original songs and music videos, choreographed flash mobs for Ariana Grande and Beyoncé's performances in a real Target store, the latter of which Beyoncé personally acknowledged Hall for, musical collaborations with Pentatonix, and personal information.

"I Wanta Be on Glee" was a video audition for the third season of Glee in May 2011. Despite the fact that the video was popular, Hall was not cast in the program. Virgin America produced a pop-music safety video directed by Jon M. Chu in November 2013 with music by Jean-Yves Decornet. Hall wrote the song and lyrics and appeared in the film. Hall's "This Christmas" and "Sleigh Bells" was released in December 2013, as well as original songs "So Cold" and "SplitsOnXmasTrees" on the CD.

Hall was recalled as a full judge for RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars 3 later this year and again in 2017. Straight Outta Oz, Todrick's second album, was released on June 23, 2016. Hall's performance in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots brought the Straight Outta Oz Tour to a halt. Hall revealed in May 2019 that he would be releasing a trilogy of extended plays over the course of six months. Pt. "Glitter" is the first single from the artist's debut. The EP also featured "Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels," as well as a Ciara remix. The EPs were accompanied by the Haus Party World Tour. Hall performed "Magic Happens" on Disneyland's new twice a day parade in February 2020. "I learned to dance by attending Disney parades," Hall says. Hall revealed on social media on Thursday that he had spent the past week writing and recording Quarantine Queen, based on the COVID-19 pandemic. The album was released on April 29, 2020. Hall joined CAA Management in May 2020. On November 26, 2020, Hall released a live album of the Haus Party world tour recorded in Atlanta, as well as a full video recording on YouTube for free.

After being postponed sixteen months since its initial launch date, Hall released the third volume of the Haus Party trilogy on February 12, 2021. Hall finished second place in season six of The Masked Singer in December 2021.

Hall was revealed in January 2022 that it would be competing in the third season of Celebrity Big Brother as a contestant. He made it to the final three and then named runner-up for the season. During his time on the program, he was widely chastised for his remarks regarding Shanna Moakler, which viewers and commentators alike described as body shaming. In addition, Hall has received backlash after he highlighted certain aspects of Chris Kirkpatrick's personal life.
