Joseph Matthew Alwyn (born 21 February 1991) is an English actor.
He has appeared in films including Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) and The Favourite (2018).
Early life and education
Joseph Matthew Alwyn was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, on February 21, 1991. Alwyn, a psychotherapist mother and a documentary filmmaker father, was born in North London's Tufnell Park and Crouch End districts. He is William Alwyn's great-grandson.
Alwyn was educated at the City of London School. He took guitar lessons for a brief period of time and was a member of the school band "Anger Management" at the age 13. He later played football and rugby in high school. Although Alwyn was "introverted" as a child, he aspired to be a performer and joined the National Youth Theatre in his late teens. He appeared in two student performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English literature and drama at the University of Bristol. He attended four drama schools in 2012 and was accepted by all but one—the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, where he earned a bachelor degree in acting. Alwyn began working with an agent who had come across Alwyn at a student showcase during the third year of the program. The agent informed Alwyn that a production firm was aiming to film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016), which would be Alwyn's first appearance in a film.
Personal life
Alwyn's personal life is largely private, with him referring to the lifestyle we live in as a "knee-jerk reaction to the society we live in." He is concerned about the media's invasion of personal information. Alwyn was dubbed a "notoriously low-key actor" by GQ. He was dubbed "Hollywood's Most Private Leading Man" by the Wall Street Journal. Alwyn has been in a relationship with Taylor Swift since 2016. As Swift was more open about her intimate life in the past, media outlets have taken note of the secrecy Alwyn and Swift maintain about their relationship.
"I" don't really [because I] want to be shielded and private," Alwyn said in April 2022. We live in a world in which access is so perplexing... and, yes, even if you don't give it — something will be stolen." Alwyn wrote a letter to Swift about rumors of suspected involvement with Swift. "I'd have a pound for every time I've been told I've been engaged," Alwyn wrote in The Wall Street Journal. Well, the truth is that if the answer was yes, I wouldn't say, and I wouldn't say no, then I wouldn't tell, and if the answer was no, I wouldn't say."
Career
Alwyn appeared in Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, a film based on Ben Fountain's 2012 book of the same name. Lee said he chose Alwyn because of his "ability to convey the book's intricacy of war with only his facial expressions." Critics lauded Alwyn's naturalism in the film's reviews. Journalists went on to describe the film as his "breakout." He appeared in The Sense of an Ending, an Indian filmmaker directed by Ritesh Batra, in 2017.
Alwyn appeared in a number of 2018 films. In the period black comedy film The Favourite, directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, he played British nobleman Samuel Masham alongside actress Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Nicholas Hoult. At the 91st Academy Awards, the film received ten nominations. In Chris Weitz's historical drama Operation Finale, starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley in the lead roles and a small part in Joel Edgerton's Boy Erased, a biographical drama film based on a 2016 memoir based on a gay activist Garrard Conley's Boy Erased. Alwyn appeared as English statesman Robert Dudley, Queen Elizabeth I's favorite, alongside Saoirse Ronan as Queen Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth. Alwyn was named Trophée Chopard alongside Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, recognizing his talent.
In Harriet, a biographical drama starring Cynthia Erivo and Janelle Monáe, Alwyn played slave owner Gideon Brodess. In the dark fantasy television miniseries A Christmas Carol, based on England writer Charles Dickens' 1843 novella. He appeared as Bob Cratchit. In 2021, he appeared in a minor role in drama film The Souvenir Part II and starred as a 1960s industrialist in Jojo Moyes' 2008 romantic book "The Last Letter from Your Lover," alongside Felicity Jones, Callum Turner, and Shailene Woodley.
Jemima Kirke and Sasha Lane appeared in the 2022 drama collection Conversations with Friends, an Hulu adaptation of Irish author Sally Rooney's 2017 book of the same name. He appeared in two 2022 films, including with Margaret Qualley in the French thriller film Stars at Noon directed by French filmmaker Claire Denis and as the uncle of the titular character in Lena Dunham's medieval thriller film Catherine Called Birdy, which was based on Australian writer Karen Cushman's 1994 children's novel of the same name; both films were received generally favorable feedback, with the former premiering at the Cannes Film Festival and winning the Grand Prix. In Aneil Karia's latest version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Alwyn appears alongside Riz Ahmed and Morfydd Clark.
With American singer-songwriter and girlfriend Taylor Swift, Alwyn explored his musical prospects. He denied that he had intended to work with Swift, but "it came from playing around on a piano and screaming badly," and "being overheard by Swift" and saying, "Let's see what happens if we get to the end of it together." On Swift's eighth studio album, Folklore (2020), he co-produced "Exile," "My Tears Ricochet," "August," "This Is Me Trying" and "Illicit Affairs"; under the pseudonym William Bowery. "Exile" debuted on top ten charts in several countries, including number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number eight on the UK Singles Chart, with number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number eight on the UK Singles Chart at number six. "Exile" was nominated for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammy Awards in 2021, while Folklore took home the Album of the Year, winning Alwyn his first Grammy nomination. He (as Bowery) co-wrote "Champagne Problems," "Coney Island," and Swift's second album, Evermore. Alwyn revealed to The Wall Street Journal that the name "William Bowery" was derived from his grandfather William Alwyn's first name, and that the last name was in honor of the New York City suburb Bowery, where he had spent "a lot of time" when he first landed in the United States. Bowery co-written his penultimate track, "Sweet Nothing" as Bowery, on her tenth studio album, Midnights (2022).
