Samuel Peter W. Riley (born 8 January 1980) is an English actor and singer.

He is best known for his role in Control, a 2007 biographical film about Ian Curtis' life as protagonist Sal Paradise in the Jack Kerouac book On the Road, and as Diaval in the 2014 film Maleficent.

Early life

Riley was born in Menston, West Yorkshire, the son of Amanda, a nursery school teacher, and Andrew Riley, a textile agent. He was educated at Malsis School, Cross Hills, and Uppingham School.

Personal life

Riley and his wife, Romanian-German actress Alexandra Maria Lara, live in Berlin as of 2011. They met while filming Control in August 2009 and then have a son born in January 2014.


Sam Riley Career


His breakthrough role came when he appeared in Control, a biopic about the lead singer of the 1970s post-punk band Joy Division. The film received a high degree of praise in part due to Riley's performance, which earned him a few awards, including the British Independent Film Award for "Most Promising Newcomer" a BAFTA "Rising Star" nomination; and a Mark Kermode nod for Best Actor 2007.

Riley played Ian Curtis in the Michael Winterbottom film 24 Hour Party People, which describes the Factory Records period and features Sean Harris as Ian Curtis. Riley's scenes were, on the other hand, were omitted from the final cut.

Riley appeared in Gerald McMorrow's British science fiction film Franklyn in September 2007. He starred in 13 (1986), an English language translation of the French thriller 13 Tzameti that has yet to have an American and European release. In Brighton Rock, he appeared as Pinkie Brown, alongside Helen Mirren, an extension of Graham Greene's book that was released on February 4, 2011. He appeared in Walter Salles' film version of Jack Kerouac's autobiographical On the Road narrator and protagonist Sal Paradise. He also stars in the 2011 German comedy Woman in Love, in which his wife Alexandra Maria Lara plays the female lead. His job is listed as "Wagenmeister."

Darvell appears in Byzantium (2012), a film directed by Neil Jordan, alongside Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan.

Riley was cast as Diaval in Disney's Maleficent in 2012, as well as Angelina Jolie. The film was released in May 2014.

He appeared in Benoit Labarie in Saul Dibb's film version of Irène Némirovsky's novel Suite Française, starring Michelle Williams, Matthias Schoenaerts, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Ruth Wilson.

In the film Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Riley was also portrayed as Fitzwilliam Darcy (Mr. Darcy).

In the 2018 film Happi New Year, Colin Burstead by Ben Wheatley, Riley played the 'not-so welcome' returning prodigal brother David.

He appeared in the British fashion house Burberry's autumn/winter 2008 publicity campaign, led by Christopher Bailey and photographed by Mario Testino. He modeled the Ermenegildo Zegna's fall/winter 2014 Stefano Pilati-designed couture collection. In 2015, he was named one of the top-dressed British men in the GQ.

Riley was the lead singer of the Leeds band 10,000 Things for a few years, with whom he had moderate success. They signed to major label Polydor for one self-titled album following their first appearance on indie label Voltage Records in 2002. In 2005, the group disbanded.
