Life and career
Lee Taeyong was born in Gwanak-gu, South Korea, on July 1, 1995. He graduated from the School of Performing Arts in Seoul.
Taeyong was scouted on the street by a SM Entertainment recruiter and joined the company after successfully passing the audition by performing the South Korean national anthem. He appeared in the SBS television series To the Beautiful You in the same year. Taeyong was first introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut team of trainees under SM Entertainment on December 2, 2013.
Taeyong appeared in several newspapers in 2014 alongside now-NCT member Johnny and newly Reformed Velvet members Irene and Seulgi. On SMTown's YouTube channel, a video of Taeyong performing part of his song "Open the Door" was released in July 2014. He appeared on several future NCT members on Mnet's Exo 90:2014, a show starring labelmates Exo, where they danced to K-pop hits from the 1990s. In addition, Taeyong appeared in the music video version of Shinhwa's "Yo!" "Missing You" in the Sky is a film by F.M. Taeyong was accepted as a member of NCT and its first sub-unit, NCT U. On April 8, he made his official debut with the introduction of NCT U's digital single "The 7th Sense," in which he and Mark participated in songwriting. Taeyong was announced as a member and leader of NCT's second sub-unit, the Seoul-based NCT 127 later this year. With their single "Fire Truck" on July 6, 2016, he made his NCT 127 debut. Cherry Bomb, the group's third EP, debuted in June. Taeyong co-written all songs on the album, except one. Billboard and Idolator's title track, "Cherry Bomb," was later identified as one of the year's best K-pop songs. In the same year, Taeyong collaborated with fellow SM Entertainment artists Hitchhiker and Yoo Young-jin. In May, Hitchhiker's experimental song "Around" was released with accompanying music video as part of the SM Station project. He collaborated with singer and producer Yoo Young-jin on the rock ballad "Cure" in August 2017, also on SM Station. Taeyong appeared on the soundtrack for the drama School 2017 as a rapper in and songwriter for R&B's "Stay in My Life," along with NCT 127's vocalists Taeil and Doyoung.
NCT 2018 Empathy, the first studio album released by the company in March 2018 as part of a large scale project unifying all of its sub-units, NCT 2018 Empathy. Taeyong appeared in five of the album's units as well as writing five songs for Empathy. Taeyong, a singer from Taeyong, joined the cast of Food Diary in May 2018 as a result of a group of celebrities researching farming and the process of food production, as well as labelmate BoA.
Taeyong co-wrote four songs for NCT 127's first studio album, Regular-Irregular, which also included lead single "Regular." The song was initially released in English and Korean, but it later became the debut single of NCT's Chinese sub-unit WayV's Chinese subunit, WayV, in Shanghai, NCT.
In April 2019, NCT 127 released their first Japanese studio album, Awaken, for which Taeyong co-wrote the song "Lips." Taeyong's first solo song, "Long Flight," which he wrote and co-composed, was released in July 2019, as well as a accompanying music video. The track was the culmination of the SM Station's third season. The album debuted at number six on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart, with the song ranked at number six. Taeyong was announced as a member of SuperM, a K-pop supergroup produced by SM Entertainment in collaboration with Capitol Records on August 8, 2019. The company's promotions began in October and were targeted at the American market. They released their first EP, SuperM, in which Taeyong co-wrote and co-produced the song "No Manners." NCT 127 also released Neo Zone, their second studio album, in March 2020. Taeyong contributed to three songs on the album. It was commercially successful and debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200, selling more than 200,000 copies in South Korea, as well as its repackage, Neo Zone: The Final Round. SuperM's first studio album, Super One, was released later this year, for which Taeyong co-wrote the song "Together At Home." NCT 2020: Resonance, NCT's second group-wide initiative, was announced in September, and Taeyong was appointed as the group's leader.
Taeyong opened his own SoundCloud account and unveiled a new demo single "Dark Clouds" and its remix on March 15, 2021. Since then, he has released demo singles including "GTA1" and "GTA2," "Blue," "Monroe" (featuring Baekhyun of Exo), "Rose" (featuring Seulgi of Red Velvet) and "Swimming Pool" on the website. At the SoundCloud 2021 Playback Awards, "Dark Clouds" received the Top Comments Award, with the most fan comments on the website in 2021. Taeyong served as a judge on the dance revival show Street Woman Fighter, which attracted a large audience around the world in August. Along with fellow NCT member Mark, he later appeared as a guest judge on the program's spin-off, Street Dance Girls Fighter. Taeyong co-wrote the title track for NCT 127's third studio album Sticker, which went on to become the best-selling song in SM Entertainment history. Having worked on the track "Zoo," he was credited as a choreographer and lyricist on the special album 2021 Winter SMCU Express.
Taeyong was announced to be in Suran's "Diamond" from her forthcoming EP Flyin' Part 1 on March 11, 2022. Taeyong revealed the launching of his YouTube channel TY Track on March 14 and later revealed the performance video for his latest song "Lonely" starring Suran the following day. Taeyong launched "Love Theory" in collaboration with Wonstein via SM Station on April 14. Taeyong was revealed to be the MC of Mnet's upcoming dance competition Any Body Can Dance, where he would reunite with Street Woman Fighter leader Michelle Leopol. On June 2, he posted his second performance video for his latest song "Ghost" on YouTube.
