Byun Baek-hyun (born May 6, 1992), better known mononymously as Baekhyun, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and actor.

He is a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group Exo, its sub-group Exo-K, its sub-unit Exo-CBX, and South Korean supergroup SuperM.

He debuted as a soloist in July 2019 with the release of his debut EP, City Lights.

Early life

Baekhyun was born on May 6, 1992, in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He has a brother named Baek-beom who is seven years older than him. Baekhyun began training to be a singer when he was 11 years old, influenced by South Korean singer Rain. He attended Jungwon High School in Bucheon, where he was the lead singer in a band called Honsusangtae (lit. "coma") and won a local music festival. He received piano lessons from Kim Hyun-woo, member of South Korean rock band DickPunks. In addition to musical activities, Baekhyun trained as a martial artist in his youth and has a dan 3 black belt in Hapkido.

Baekhyun was spotted by an SM Entertainment agent while he was studying for the entrance exams to the Seoul Institute of the Arts. He later joined SM Entertainment in 2011 through the S.M. Casting System.

Personal life

Along with fellow Exo members Chanyeol and Suho, Baekhyun attended Kyung Hee Cyber University and took online classes for Culture and Arts Department of Business Administration.

Since May 6, 2021, Baekhyun has been enlisted in South Korea's mandatory military service. Having been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, he is serving as a public service worker instead of an active-duty soldier.

Baekhyun was officially announced to be Exo's ninth member on January 30, 2012, as a leading vocalist of Exo. The group debuted in April 2012 and has since gained a following and commercial success.

Baekhyun and Exo member Suho joined Exo's Inkigayo as regular hosts for the SBS music television show Inkigayo in February 2014. They resigned from their position in November 2014 to concentrate on Exo's upcoming return to exodus. Baekhyun made his musical debut in July 2014, playing Don Lockwood in SM C&C's South Korean production of the musical Singin' in the Rain.

Baekhyun's debut "Beautiful" was his first solo song since his debut as the soundtrack to Exo's web-drama Exo Next Door in April 2015. The album went from a web drama to the top digital charts. Baekhyun was confirmed to appear in Dokgo's action film alongside actor Yeo Jin-goo in May 2015. Nonetheless, production of the film had been scheduled to have been suspended in January 2016. Baekhyun paid tribute to late South Korean singer Kim Hyun-sik by performing his song "Like Rain Like Music" at SBS' year-end music festival Gayo Daejeon in December 2015. Later this year, the recording of his performance was released digitally.

Baekhyun and Miss A member Suzy released a duet titled "Dream" in January 2016. The song debuted at number one on Gaon's weekly digital charts and climbed to the top of online real-time music charts, and later debuted at number one on Gaon's weekly digital charts. On music television shows, "Dream" received first place five times in total. Music Bank and Inkigayo are among the first five times in history on television shows. Baekhyun received the YinYue V-Chart Award for South Korea's Most Popular Singer in April 2016. As part of SM Entertainment's music project SM Station, Baekhyun and South Korean singer K.Will unveiled "The Day" in May 2016.

Baekhyun made his small screen debut in the SBS historical drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, a South Korean adaptation of the Chinese novel Bu Bu Jing Xin, in August 2016. At the 2016 SBS Drama Awards, he was recognized for his role in the drama. He also collaborated with Exo members Chen and Xiumin on an original soundtrack for the film "For You." Baekhyun was a member of Exo's first official sub unit Exo-CBX in October 2016, along with Chen and Xiumin. Hey Mama!, the company's debut extended play, was announced on October 31. Baekhyun began participating in the SM Entertainment's League of Legends tournament in November 2016. S.M., 2016 S.M. He and his labelmate Heechul competed in the Super Celeb League, a game in South Korea and China, where they met both professional players and fans from South Korea and China.

Soyou, a Baekhyun and Sistar actor, released a duet titled "Rain" in February 2017. At the opening ceremony of the 132nd International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in front of Moon Jae-in, the president of South Korea, and Lee Hee-beom, the president of the 2018 Winter Olympics, performed the South Korean national anthem on February 5, 2018. Baekhyun and rapper Loco's "Young" was a collaboration track released by the Station project in August 2018. The song debuted at number four on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart.

Baekhyun debuted as a soloist among Exo members in July 2019, the third soloist among Exo artists, when he was first to debut the EP City Lights. In 2019, the EP surpassed 550,000 copies, setting a new record for the best-selling album by a solo artist in the history of South Korea's Gaon Music Chart. It debuted on the Gaon weekly and monthly charts, ranked sixth on the year-end chart and first among albums released by solo artists. In the 2010s, it became South Korea's best-selling solo album. Baekhyun was confirmed as a member of SuperM, a "K-pop supergroup" that was created by SM Entertainment in collaboration with Capitol Records that would be aimed at the American market in August. In October, SuperM debuted with a self-titled EP and began promoting in the UK. Following the success of his debut EP City Lights and its lead single "UN Village," Baekhyun was named Best Male Artist at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards in December.

Baekhyun released two soundtrack singles, "My Love" and "On the Road," early in 2020 for the television series Dr. Both Romantic 2 and Hyena are available. Baekhyun collaborated with Bolbbalgan4 in May, earning her her hit song "Leo." On Gaon's weekly digital chart, the song reached number two. Baekhyun released his second EP Delight, which featured the lead single "Candy" in the same month. Over 732,000 pre-ordered units, making it the most pre-ordered album by a soloist in South Korea history. By July, Delight had sold more than 1,000,000 copies, becoming the first solo artist in South Korea to do so after Kim Gun-mo's "Average Days" (1901). Baekhyun also launched a remake of BoA's "Garden in the Air" from her album Girls on Top (2005) as the first release from a BoA campaign dedicated to BoA's 20th anniversary in July. "Every Second" for Record of Youth and "Happy" for Do You Like Brahms will be released later in 2020. For the second year in a row, Baekhyun received the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Male Artist. He released "Amusement Park" in a digital single later this year.

Baekhyun performed his first solo concert, Baekhyun: Light, on January 3, 2021, as in-person concerts were not possible due to restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. The concert at Beyond Live at 110,000 viewers from 120 countries. "Get You Alone," the lead single from his self-titled debut Japanese EP, which was released on January 21 a day later. The EP has been designated Gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. On March 30, Baekhyun released his third Korean-language EP (fourth overall) and its lead single of the same name, his last release before enlisting for South Korea's mandatory military service. The album was replaced by Delight as the most pre-ordered album by a solo artist in South Korea, with over 833.000 copies. It debuted at No. 1 on the Gaon Album Chart, and Baekyun's second consecutive Korean-language album to have sold more than 1 million copies. In December, he received his third consecutive Mnet Asia Music Award for Best Male Artist.
