Austin Richard Post (born July 4, 1995) is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter.

He has received acclaim for blending musical genres, including pop, hip hop, trap, and rock, as well as his reflective songwriting and laconic vocal style.

Post first gained notoriety in 2015 after the debut of his debut single "White Iverson," which debuted in the top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Early life

Malone was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 4, 1995. Richard Post, his father, and his stepmother, Jodie, raised him. In his youth, his father was a DJ and introduced Malone to a number of genres of music, including hip hop, country, and rock. After his father became the Dallas Cowboys' manager of concessions, when Malone was nine years old, he and his family moved to Grapevine, Texas. In 2010, Malone began to play the guitar and auditioned for Crown the Empire, but was turned down after his guitar strings broke during the audition. He owed his first love for learning guitar to the Guitar Hero video game.

Malone has always had a passion for alternative rock music, and he appeared at Emo Nite in Los Angeles in June 2017, playing songs from American alt-rock band My Chemical Romance. Malone's first foray into professional music came when he was in a heavy metal band. He says he converted to softer rock as well as hip hop soon after, shortly before starting to experiment on FL Studio.

When he was 14 or 15, Malone chose "Post Malone" as his stage name. The name was expected to be a reference to professional basketball player Karl Malone, but Malone later revealed that "Post" is his last name and he used a "rap name generator" to get "Malone" from his last name. Young and After Them Riches, a 16-year-old mixtape created by Audacity, Malone, was one of his first mixtapes. He showed it to some of his classmates at Grapevine High School. As a senior in high school, he was named "Most Likely to Become Famous" by his peers. As a child, he worked at a Chicken Express.

Malone continued to study at Tarrant County College but was subsequently dropped out. Malone and his longtime friend Jason Probst, a professional game streamer, moved to Los Angeles after graduating from college.

BLCKVRD, a music company formed in Los Angeles, Malone, Probst, and several other designers and artists, joined the band BLCKVRD, which played and recorded music together.
