Kapoor, who has been dubbed one of India's most popular celebrities, maintains his fame despite a shifting career path and has been named recipient of several awards, including three Filmfare Awards.

He has since appeared in action films and thrillers, originally known for portraying romantic roles. Pankaj Kapur and Neema Azeem Kapoor's son was born in New Delhi.

When he was three years old, his parents separated, and he continued living with his mother.

When he was ten years old, the family moved to Mumbai, where he joined Shiamak Davar's dance academy.

Kapoor appeared in a few films in the 1990s, and was later seen in music videos and television commercials.

He made his film debut in 2003 with a leading role in the romantic comedy Ishq Vishk, a sleeper hit for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

He began with appearances in a number of commercial failures before starring in Sooraj Barjatya's top-grossing family drama Vivah (2006). Kapoor received accolades for portraying a struggling businessman in Imtiaz Ali's romantic comedy Jab We Met (2006) and his twin brothers in Vishal Bhardwaj's thriller Kaminey (2009).

He appeared in R... Rajkumar (2013), the actor who appeared in another series of failed films.

Kapoor's drama Haider (2014) and a drug abuse performer in the crime drama Udta Punjab (2016) earned critical praise for portraying the Hamlet character.

He received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the former, and for the latter, he received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.

The period drama Padmaavat (2018) and Kabir Singh's romantic romance Kabir Singh (2019) were two of Kapoor's top-grossing launches. Kapoor also supports charities, hosts award ceremonies, and has appeared on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded (2015) as a talent judge.

Early life

Shahid Kapoor was born in New Delhi on February 25, 1981, to actor Pankaj Kapur and actress Neelima Azeem. When he was three years old, his parents divorced; his father and his mother, Supriya Pathak, migrated to Mumbai; Kapoor and his maternal grandparents remained in Delhi. Kapoor's grandparents were journalists for the Russian magazine Sputnik, and his grandfather, "He would walk me to school every single day." He'll talk to me about dad, with whom he had a wonderful friendship, and read out his letters to me." On his birthday, his father, who was then a struggling actor in Mumbai, would visit Kapoor only once a year. When Kapoor was ten years old, his mother, who was working as a dancer, moved to Mumbai to work as an actor.

Azeem began to marry actor Rajesh Khattar in Mumbai. Kapoor and Khattar continued to live together until they separated in 2001. Kapoor continues to use the last name Khattar on his passport. Ishaan, his mother's marriage to Khattar, has a maternal half-brother. Sanah and Ruhaan are two paternal half-siblings from his father's marriage to Pathak. Kapoor was educated at the Gyan Bharati School in Delhi and Rajhans Vidyalaya in Mumbai. He stayed at Mithibai College in Mumbai for three years.

Kapoor was involved in dance from an early age, and at the age of 15, he joined Shiamak Davar's dance academy. Kapoor appeared in the films Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Taal (1999), in which Davar served as the choreographer as a student. Kapoor performed in the songs "Vogue" and "GoldenEye" at the institute, receiving a positive response from the audience; he said it was the first time he had "felt like a celebrity" during a stage show. He later became an instructor at the university. Kapoor was accompanying a friend to an audition for a Pepsi commercial starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, but he did not appear in the role himself during this period. Among others, he appeared in television commercials for Kit Kat and Close-Up, as well as other artists, and was featured in music videos for a variety of artists, including the band Aryans and singer Kumar Sanu. On the 1998 television series Mohandas B.A.L.B., Kapoor also served as an assistant director to his father.

Personal life and off-screen work

Kapoor's personal life is the subject of ferocious tabloid coverage in India. He began dating Kareena Kapoor during Fida's filming in 2004, and the two of them openly discussed their friendship. When Midday revealed a series of photographs of them kissing in public, they were embroiled in a well-publicised scandal. Despite the couple's assertions that the photos were faked, the paper denied any wrongdoing. During Jab We Met's filming in 2007, the two became estranged. Kapoor and his partner decided to keep his personal life away from media notice after their split. However, tabloids speculated on Vidya Balan's relationship with several other actresses, including Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan. Kapoor lodged a police complaint of stalking against former actress Valiantta Pandit in 2012.

Kapoor told Mira Rajput, a university student from New Delhi who is 13 years younger, that he is planning his marriage to her impending marriage. Kapoor met Rajput through the Dharmic religious group Radha Soami Satsang Beas, according to the Times of India. The couple married in Gurgaon on 7 July 2015, and Rajput gave birth to their daughter Misha in August 2016 and their son Zain in September 2018.

Kapoor performs on stage and hosts awards ceremonies in addition to acting in films. In 2006, he appeared on RockStars, a world tour in which he appeared alongside Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham, Salman Khan, and three other celebrities. Kapoor has co-hosted three Screen Awards ceremonies with Shah Rukh Khan, and he co-hosted three International Film Academy Awards from 2010 to 2014.

Kapoor practices vegetarianism, and cites Brian Hines' book Life is Fair for influencing this lifestyle choice. He also supports charitable causes for a variety of causes. In 2010, he appeared at Superstars Ka Jalwa, a charity fundraiser that raised funds for the Cine and Television Artists Association's employees. He also lent his assistance to the NGO Swayamsidh, which supports children with special needs. He adopted three villages in support of NDTV's Greenathon, an effort to boost environmental awareness and improve electricity availability to rural areas. Kapoor also helped revive the Victory Arts Foundation NGO, which was established by Shiamak Davar, support underprivileged children by offering dance therapy services. He appeared in Because My World Is Not The Same, a short film by Zoya Akhtar's short film, to raise breast cancer awareness. Via advertisement campaigns, he supports the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals group.

Shahid Kapoor Career

Career

After seeing Kapoor in the Aryans' music video "Aankhon Mein," producer Ramesh Taurani was keen to have him in a film. However, Taurani found Kapoor, who was 20 years old at the time, to be too young and underweight to be a comedian and advised him not to wait for a few years. Kapoor, on the other hand, turned down a lead role in N. Chandra's sex comedy Style in the hopes of working with Taurani. Taurani found a good idea for Kapoor in the teenage romance Ishq Vishk (2003), which Ken Ghosh was directing for his firm. Kapoor, who previously worked on a larger physical build, was eventually recruited. He attended acting classes with Naseeruddin Shah and Satyadev Dubey before starting work on the film.

Ishq Vishk (Kapoor), a high-school student who participates in a romantic relationship with two classmates of contrasting personalities, is interviewed by Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala. Since it was a departure from the common portrayal of teenage heroes in Indian films, Kapoor was attracted to the prospect of playing an unlikable lead. Ziya Us Salam, a Hindu writer, did not find him to be "hero stuff," adding that "boyhood seems to have overstayed on his nose," but he is not necessarily bad in the acting department." Despite this, the film was a sleeper hit at the box office and received the Kapoor the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

Kapoor appeared in a film that he found to be drastically different from Ishq Vishk on his debut. Fida (2004) portrayed him as a love-struck student who is tricked by a woman (Kareena Kapoor) and her companion (Fardeen Khan) to rob a bank. Despite criticizing the film, Rama Sharma of The Tribune noted that Kapoor "shines in his role." He seems to be new. He manages to evoke empathy as a impulsive emotional and innocent individual who is pulled into violence for these very characteristics. Kapoor appeared in the romantic comedy Dil Maange More, in which he was paired opposite three women: Soha Ali Khan, Tulip Joshi, and Ayesha Takia later this year. Patcy N of Rediff.com praised his dancing abilities but was suspicious of Shah Rukh Khan's imitating style. Both his 2004 ventures were commercially flops.

In 2005, a string of poorly received films continued, although all three of Kapoor's films failed at the box office. The Deewane Huye Paagal and Vaah, two of his first two films of the year, were released in 2012. Both life and death Ho Toh Aisi! Kapoor was plagiarized from the Hollywood film There's Something About Mary, which featured Kapoor's love interest; analyst Khalid Mohamed described him as "the only likeable element in this tragedy," but journalist Namrata Joshie wrote about it. In John Matthew Matthan's drama Shikhar, Ajay Devgan's drama Shikhar, co-starring Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Amrita Rao, the former was "coloredoutput: Kapo Kapoor was "never short of spontaneity and youthful exuberance" in the film, according to Sukanya Verma.

Kapoor appeared in two films in 2006, the thriller 36 China Town and comedy Chup Chup Ke. Kapoor starred as one of the seven perpetrators in the murder of an heiress, and Chup Chup Ke played a depressed man who appears to be deaf and mute in 36 China Town, a murder mystery from the director duo Abbas-Mustan. The former was his first commercial success since Ishq Vishk. Later this year, Kapoor's romantic drama Vivah, which a film portraying an ordered marriage, had more success. The film, which was made on a shoestring budget of 100 million (US$6.6 million), earned over 530 million (US$6.6 million) worldwide and was Kapoor's highest-grossing film to that point. However, reports of the film were critical; Raja Sen. called the film a "nightmare" and said that Kapoor "isn't offensively bad, doesn't ham it up like mad, or speak in a strange accent. Having said that, he isn't an actor at all, standing around doing his boyish grin, not to mention the scenery. There is no screen presence at all."

Kapoor's first release of 2007, the ensemble comedy Fool & Final, was no success. However, the Imtiaz Ali-directed romantic comedy Jab We Met, which was his second release that year, was one of the year's best-grossing films. The film follows the life of a struggling businessman (Kapoor) whose life undergoes a series of changes after he encounters a vivacious girl (Kareena Kapoor) on a train ride. Ali felt that Kapoor's previous performances did not speak for his acting abilities, and so she suggested he portray a more complex character. The BBC outlined how "endearing" he was in the film and CNN-IBN's Rajeev Masand said he left a "indelible" role in a film he felt solely belonged to Kareena Kapoor. Kapoor received his first nomination for Best Actor for his appearance.

Kapoor played twin brothers, one with a lisp and the other with a stutter in Vishal Bhardwaj's critically acclaimed action film Kaminey (2009), despite starring opposite Vidya Balan in the romantic comedy Kismat Konnection (2008). Kapoor consulted with speech specialists and researched the medical and mental aspects of the two disorders in preparation. Kapoor did not have a lean physique for one of the brothers' appearance, a look he considered to be "radically different" from his personal appearance, engaged in functional fitness and followed a strict diet. Critic Joe Leydon wrote for Variety that Kapoor "impressively displays sufficiently varied levels of emotional intensity to maintain the appearance of two distinct characters." He gives each sibling an appropriately raised hunkiness quotient, which is just as important." Kapoor's success in 2009 as the best by a Bollywood actor, according to Rediff.com, and he earned his second Best Actor award at Filmfare. Kaminey's revenues grew to over 900 million (US$8.8 million) around the world. In Dil Bole Hadippa!, a romantic comedy co-starring Rani Mukerji, Kapoor's last appearance of 2009 was as a cricketer. It was a financial loss at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it was not a financial loss.

Kapoor reteamed with Ken Ghosh in Chance Pe Dance, a comedy-drama about a struggling actor in which Kapoor's appearance was described as "uneven" by Daily News and Analysis's Aniruddha Guha. He appeared in Paathshaala, a drama about India's education system, starring Nana Patekar, after which he appeared in Yash Raj Films' Badmaash Company, a comedy-drama about a group of overambitious teenagers who have become con men. Rachel Saltz of The New York Times praised Kapoor's role in the film, but Mid-Day's Tushar Joshi thought he was miscast. Satish Kaushik's romantic comedy Milenge Milenge, which marked his fourth collaboration with Kareena Kapoor, was his fourth and final release this year. The film was postponed since 2005, plagiarized from the Hollywood film Serendipity. Kapoor requested a postponement of filming in Phuket, Thailand, during the premiere of Dil Maange More in December 2004. Since the hotel was booked for them after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, it may have saved their lives. None of these films, with the exception of Badmaash Company, did well commercially.

Kapoor appeared in his father's directorial Mausam (2011); co-starring Sonam Kapoor, the star-crossed passion that took two years to resolve, took two years to finish. Kapoor did not do additional work while filming for it because it was his "dream project." Kapoor, an unambitious village boy who will serve as an air force pilot, has been trained to fly the F-16 Combat Falcon. "while he doesn't quite cut it as a convincing IAF pilot," Rajeev Masand said, "Shahid Kapoor is a natural performer as the small-town brat." Kapoor later regretted for wasting so much money on the film because it was a box office flop, and he was later regretful for investing so much time on the project.

Kapoor continued to play in Kunal Kohli's Teri Meri Kahaani (2012), co-starring Priyanka Chopra. It tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers who have been reincarnated in three distinct eras. "Shahid and Priyanka give it their best shot, but their charm doesn't make up for the lack of a genuine kahani [story]," filmfare reported. Kapoor's first film of 2013 was Phata Poster Nikhla Hero by director Rajkumar Santoshi. His role was played by Vishwas Rao, a struggling actor who appears as a policeman. Critical comments on the film were critical, though Kapoor's appearance was lauded. The film did not receive much attention at the box office, prompting industry analysts to question his commercial appeal. This changed later this year, when he appeared in Prabhu Deva's action film R... Rajkumar; despite a poor critical reception, the film earned over 900 million (US$12 million) worldwide, becoming Kapoor's highest-grossing release to that date. In a scathing review, Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV called the film a "momento mess" and said that Kapoor "ends up looking more moronic than macho" in it. While filming a stunt scene in R... Rajkumar, Kapoor sustained burns on his back and hands.

Kapoor returned to film Haider (2014), an adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet set during the 1995 Kashmir war in which he starred Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor. Kapoor referred to the film as the "toughest" of his career, and he waived his fees to participate in it. He shaved his head and learned to speak in a Kashmiri dialect for the role. Haider received critical acclaim, but Indian nationalists were dissatisfied with the film's portrayal of the conflict in Kashmir. Sanjukta Sharma of Mint found the film to be a "impressive reimagination of Shakespeare," and he praised Kapoor for playing his part with "impressive energy and inventiveness." Anupama Chopra, a Hindustan Times columnist, wrote that Kapoor initially seemed uncomfortable in the role, but that "slowly [...] comes to inhabit Haider, veering from rage to obsession in a heartbeat." Kapoor has received numerous awards for his work, including the Screen Award, Producers Guild Film Award, and Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

Kapoor appeared in Vikas Bahl's Shaandaar (2015) after fulfilling the roles of a talent judge on the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded. It's both a technological and economic loss: It's about insomniacs who fell in love at a destination wedding. Kapoor continued to perform in Udta Punjab (2016), a drug abuse drama starring Abhishek Chaubey that reveals the drug use in the Indian state of Punjab. Kapoor, a teetotaler, found it difficult to be an addict. Despite his obnoxious behaviours, he based the role on many pop stars and was keen to bring out his character's vulnerability. When the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ordered extensive censorship before its theatrical release, Udta Punjab's portrayal of Punjab in it was negative. The calls sparked a discussion on freedom of expression in India. The Bombay High Court approved it for display with a single scene cut, in which Kapoor's character is seen urinating on people. Sukanya Verma took note of the film's anti-drug message, saying that Kapoor was "spectacularly unbridled" in his role, and that "the believability he brings to his difficult transition while retaining his inherent flakiness merits all the praise." Kapoor received the Best Actor award at the Filmfare Critics Award (shared with Manoj Bajpayee for Aligarh) and received a Best Actor award at the same time.

Kapoor portrayed a taciturn soldier who establishes a romance with a film actor in his third collaboration with Vishal Bharadwaj, an epic romance set during World War II called Rangoon (2017) (played by Kangana Ranaut). Filming was interrupted by a reported rivalry between Ranaut and Kapoor, and although they denied the reports, both actors openly mocked each other. Mixed reviews were given to the film; Rajeev Masand described it as "overlong, indulgent to the point of exhaustion," but Kapoor lauded for his role as "remarkable maturity." In addition, Uday Bhatia of Mint was appreciative of the chemistry between Ranaut and Kapoor. Rangoon was unable to recover its 610 million (US$7.6 million) investment.

In Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama Padmaavat (2018), co-starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Kapoor next played Rawal Ratan Singh, a 14th-century Rajput king. After several changes were made, it was approved by the CBFC for release by violent right-wing Hindu organizations, who suspected that the film mistook historical fact. Ankur Pathak of HuffPost was dissatisfied with the film's adherence to regressive patriarchal traditions, and chastised Kapoor for being "a bit stiff and robotic." Padmaavat had a production budget of 2 billion (US$25 million), making it the most expensive Hindi film ever made. With a worldwide sales of 5.45 billion (US$68 million), it is one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and is Kapoor's best-selling Indian films of all time. He appeared in Batti Gul Meter Chalu, a social problem film in rural India about electricity shortages, for which he learned the Garhwali dialect later this year. Filming was temporarily suspended as the company's production company, KriArj Entertainment, refused to remunerate the crew and then resumed, after Bhushan Kumar took over the project. "Kapoor," Saibal Chatterjee, who is undercooked and confused, does his best to make the most out of a bad offer, but he is unable to convey any real emotion."

Kapoor appeared in Kabir Singh, a Telugu romantic drama in which he played a self-destructive alcoholic pining for his ex-girlfriend. He found it difficult to separate himself from the role, and feared that the event would be shared to his wife and children. He lost 14 kilograms in scenes in which he appeared as a college student. Shubhra Gupta wrote for The Indian Express and found Kapoor to be "too old for this role," and that his dissolution never feels as vividly as the one in Udta Punjab. Nonetheless, it earned more than 3.7 billion (US$46 million) worldwide, and Kapoor's second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, as well as Kapoor's biggest commercial success in which he acted as the sole male lead. At Filmfare, he received his second Best Actor nomination.

Kapoor appeared in Jersey (2022), a remake of the Telugu film of the same name, about a former cricketer who wants to make a comeback in his late 30s, after a three-year absence from the screen. He sustained a fractured forehead while filming for a cricket sequence that needed 13 stitches. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, film making and distribution of the film were postponed several times. Archika Khurana of The Times of India praised him for his reputation as a cricketer. It did not do well at the box office, which was disappointing.

Kapoor will appear in Ali Abbas Zafar's action film Bloody Daddy and in Farzi, a crime drama series from Raj & DK for Amazon Prime Video.
