His father is of Irish descent, while his mother, who is half Irish and half Italian descent. In 1999, his parents divorced.

Carly and Shanna Evans, as well as actor Scott Evans, have two sisters. He and his siblings were raised Catholic. Mike Capuano, their uncle, was a member of Massachusetts' 8th congressional district.

As an infant, he loved musical theatre and attended acting camp. Randolph MacAfee appeared in Bye Bye Birdie's musical Bye Birdie. During Christmases, he and his siblings appeared onstage, noting that being onstage "felt like home." Evans spent the summer in New York City and attended classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute before beginning his senior year of high school. In 1999, Evans graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. He was a schoolmate of Jeremy Strong.

Personal life

Evans is a descendant of Buddhism. He is a fan of the New England Patriots and narrated America's Game: The Story of the 2014 New England Patriots and America's Game: The 2016 Patriots. Evans adopted Dodger, a local animal shelter, while filming Gifted in 2015.

Jessica Biel from 2001 to 2006, actor Minka Kelly on-and-off from 2007 to 2014, and actress Jenny Slate from 2016 to 2018.

Evans defended same-sex marriage in 2012, saying, "It's absurd that civil rights are being denied to people in this day and age." It's embarrassing, and it's sad. I'm not saying that I'm 100% in favour of gay rights. We'll be ashamed that this was an issue in ten years." In August 2016, he approved Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's continued enforcement of the state's ban on assault weapons. In the 2016 presidential race, Evans endorsed Hillary Clinton and was skeptical of Donald Trump's presidency.

Evans called the bill "completely ridiculous" after Alabama passed the Human Life Protection Act in May, which places a near-total ban on abortions in the state, and continued by saying, "If you're not worried about Roe vs. Wade, you're not paying attention." In July 2020, he launched A Starting Point, a website that publishes short interviews of American elected officials on a variety of topics around the political spectrum, with the intention of presenting "both the Democratic and Republican point of view on hundreds of topics." In October, Evans hosted a virtual fundraising event to help Joe Biden's 2020 presidential campaign. In the 2021 New York City Democratic canoral primary, Maya Wiley favors her over.

Evans is a supporter of Christopher's Haven, a charity that provides housing to families affected by childhood cancer, and has participated in fundraisers to support the charity. Since the two bet that resulted in donations for the hospital and Christopher's Haven in 2015, he and actor Chris Pratt visited patients in the Seattle Children's Hospital. Evans initiated a virtual fundraiser in May 2020 for Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, World Central Kitchen, and No Kid Hungry. He won $80,000 for Christopher's Haven by placing third in a charity fantasy football tournament with his Avengers co-stars.

"You make a lot of strange connections with a lot of thirsty people," he said, "but you're actually one of the thirsty people." It was a blast. It was really bad. It's like the L.A. welcome committee. Evans made his television debut in The Newcomers, a family drama in which he plays a young Judd, who falls in love with a girl (Kate Bosworth). In addition, Evans appeared in the television series Opposite Sex, which lasted for eight episodes. Evans appeared in a 'Guilt' episode.'

He was a principal actor in The Perfect Score, a teen heist-comedy about a group of students who broke into an office in order to rob answers to the SAT exam. Since randomly receiving a phone call from her, Evans plays college student Ryan, who must rescue a kidnapped woman (Basinger). "Evans proves himself to be a vivacious leading man," the magazine's review found. Evans remarked that some of his early films were "most awful."

Evans appeared in Fierce People, an adaptation of Dirk Wittenborn's 2002 book of the same name, which was filmed in 2005. He appeared in London, a romantic drama in which he played a drug user with relationship issues. Critics mocked London's response; Variety magazine described it as "noxious" and thought Evans' character was the worst, and film critic Roger Ebert called the film "dreck."

In Fantastic Four (2005), based on the Marvel Comic of the Same name, he portrayed superhero Johnny Storm / Human Torch, his first comic book role. Despite a split audience, the film was a commercial success on release. Joe Leydon of Variety praised the actors for their efforts, and that Evans delivered a "charismatic breakout performance." He reprised his role in the sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2005), two years later. Rob Salem, a Toronto actor, thought the film was a "significant change" from the first, and the Chicago Reader thought the cast was "amusing enough" to carry the sequel. Evans said they left him "a little uncomfortable" in 2016 after he'd imagined them as "not exactly the way I'd imagined them."

In the animation TMNT (2007), based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series, Casey Jones appeared. The film was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company to mixed reviews from critics, but critics were not impressed, but it was a commercial success, grossing $95 million worldwide. He appeared in Danny Boyle's science fiction thriller Sunshine (2007), which follows a group of astronauts on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying sun. It received generally favorable feedback; Roger Ebert wrote the script as "ethical... they almost all play professional astronauts/scientists, not action-movie heroes." In addition, he appeared in The Nanny Diaries (2006), in which he plays the love interest to Scarlett Johansson's character. Battle for Terra, another science fiction animation about a peaceful alien planet that is largely destroyed by colonization by a displaced majority of the human race, was his last release of 2007. It premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a larger theatrical release in 2009. Critical reception was largely mixed; Rotten Tomatoes, a research company, gave the film an approval rating of 49 percent based on 95 reviewers.

Evans appeared as Detective Paul Diskant in the thriller Street Kings in 2008, starring Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, and Hugh Laurie. He appeared in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, co-starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Ellen Burstyn. It's a romantic drama based on Tennessee Williams' 1957 screenplay. Evans' appearance was criticized by critics, and a Village Voice reporter called Evans' appearance "catatonic." He appeared in the science fiction thriller Push in the following year, alongside Dakota Fanning and Camilla Belle. The film follows a group of people with various superhuman abilities who band together to take down a shadowy organisation that is genetically altering ordinary people into an army of super soldiers. Principal photography was held in Hong Kong, where Evans developed bruised skin from doing his own combat scenes. The film's reaction was generally critical; Claudia Puig of USA Today described it as "silly" and "convoluted," while San Francisco Chronicle editor Mick LaSelle predicted that Evans, "one of these days" will make a good movie.

Evans appeared in Sylvain White's The Losers, an adaptation of the DC Comics imprint Vertigo's comic book series of the same name. Because the role "doesn't take life too seriously," Evans was attracted to playing Captain Jake Jensen. He's the one that actually loves life and is always looking for a joke." Despite mixed reviews, The Guardian's reviewer lauded the cast for their "breezy charm" and Evans' comic relief. Evans appeared in another comic book adaptation, Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), in which he portrayed Lucas Lee, one of Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes. The film was a box-office disaster, but critics were lauding it and that it was revived as a cult film again. Puncture, directed in Houston, Texas, starred Mark Kassen and Adam Kassen. The film premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival as one of the festival's spotlight programs. Mike Weiss, a real-life young lawyer and heroin user, was depicted by Evans. Critical reception was split on its first day; New York Post writer Lou Lumenick praised the "solid" results despite ignoring deficiencies in the dialogue and subpoenas, despite noting shortcomings in the execution and subpoena. The A.V. The film "rarely manages to concentrate on [Weiss]," the club critic said. Evans was cast in the romantic comedy What's Your Number? An adaptation of Karyn Bosnak's book 20 Times a Lady, (2011). Nathan Rabin of The A.V. criticizes The A.V.'s Nathan Rabin. Evans' and Faris' chemistry was "frisky," the club gave the film a C+ rating and opined that it was "frisky."

In 2010, Evans signed a multi-film contract with Marvel Studios to portray Marvel Comics character Steve Rogers / Captain America. Evans initially turned down the role, but he later worked with Robert Downey Jr., who urged him to play the role. Evans accepted and went to see a therapist afterward, and marvelled at Marvel's tenacity. "I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now," he found the character amusing to act. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), the first film to be released. The protagonist is turned into a super-soldier Captain America, and the Red Skull must be prevented from using the Tesseract as a power source for world dominance. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $370 million worldwide box office. The Sydney Morning Herald's optimistic review called the film a "new twist on twentieth-century history" and lauded Evans' "confident-but-subtle care" in his role.

Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner appeared in The Avengers a year later. The film was another commercial hit; it grossed $1.519 billion and became one of the top-grossing films of all time. Rotten Tomatoes, a review company, gave the film a 92% score out of more than 350 reviews. The Avengers received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects and a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) nomination for Best Special Visual Effects. In the biographical film The Iceman, about the murderer Richard Kuklinski, Robert Pronge, he played hitman Robert Pronge. The role was supposed for James Franco, but before filming began, Evans was left out. Evans wore a wig and grew a beard in order to look the part. David Rooney, a writer for The Hollywood Reporter, lauded Evans' versatile appearance, which was unlike his Captain America persona.

Evans was cast in Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer (2013), which is based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige and returns to the science fiction genre. Bong was initially reluctant to cast him, but after seeing Evans' appearances in Sunshine and Puncture, which showed a "sensitive" perspective, he changed his mind. The story unfolds aboard the Snowpiercer train as it travels around the globe, carrying the last survivors of humanity after a failed attempt at climate engineering to reduce global warming. The film was critically acclaimed, with Salon magazine's critic referring to the cast performances as "sensational." Snowpiercer was featured in several lists of the best films of 2014, including The Guardian's classics of modern South Korean cinema.

In 2014, Evans appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. Captain America appears in the film as part of Black Widow and Falcon to uncover a ruse within the spy firm S.I.E.L.D. While confronting the Winter Soldier assassination attempt, the Winter Soldier was on his way. Principal photography began in August 2013; Evans was prepared by three months of strength training and mastering all the battle sequences. It was well-reced and a commercial success, grossing $714 million worldwide, similar to the first film. Despite the plot being "a little too complicated," Peter Howell of Toronto thought Evans was "impressive" for bringing the comic book character to life. Since learning his character, Evans recalled The Winter Soldier was his favorite Marvel film, and he loved working with directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

Evans suggested in March 2014 that he might consider doing less acting so that he can concentrate on directing rather than acting. He made his directorial debut in the romantic comedy Before We Go, in which he also appeared, opposite Alice Eve. The film tells the tale of two strangers who meet at Grand Central Terminal and form an unlikely friendship overnight. It premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival; Ben Keninsberg, the New York Times critic, opined that it was a modest effort, but that the actors' chemistry made it watchable. He starred in another romantic comedy in the same year as Michelle Monaghan in Playing It Cool. He appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to 2012's The Avengers, in the following year. In 2016, he reprised his role in Captain America: Civil War, the sequel to Captain America's The Winter Soldier. Both of these films were box office hits, grossing $1.4 billion and $1.1 billion worldwide, respectively. Later, the Hollywood Reporter learned that his Civil War pay was $20 million.

In the family drama Gifted in 2017, Evans played an intellectually gifted seven-year-old girl who becomes the subject of a custody dispute between her uncle (Evans) and grandmother (Lindsay Duncan). Despite being set in Florida, filming in Georgia took place in order to profit from the state's generous grant of $3 million. Evans played his part in "conviction" despite a predictable plot, according to a critical reviewer. He was accepted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the same year.

In 2018, he appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and in spring 2019, the fourth sequel Avengers: Endgame. Both of these films were produced by Anthony and Joe Russo; they had intended to film them simultaneously but decided against doing so due to difficulties. "We had to fight to get an actual paper script," Evans said of Scarlett Johansson and Avengers: Infinity War before filming. On an iPad, we had either pages or bits. It's been arduous." The reviewer from Time magazine criticized Evans and co-star Chris Hemsworth's "blast to watch" in Avengers: Infinity War, although USA Today stated that the film was lacking in pace and substance. When Avengers: Endgame wrapped filming in October 2018, Evans said it was emotional: "I was letting myself go to work every day and being a little overwhelmed and grateful." By the end of the day, I was sluggish. I was starting to cry, but it was certainly bawling." The fourth sequel earned $2.7 billion worldwide, and Robbie Collin of The Telegraph praised the filmmakers for making one of the most entertaining films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the performance Lobby Hero, directed by Trip Cullman, which opened at the Helen Hayes Theatre in March 2018 as part of the Second Stage Theatre's first Broadway season, Evans made his Broadway debut in the show Lobby Hero. It was described as a "terrific Broadway debut" by Ben Brantley of The New York Times, who found it to be a "marvel of smooth calculation and bluster." Evans was nominated for a Drama League Award. Evans played an Israeli Mossad agent in The Red Sea Diving Resort, which was loosely based on Operation Moses and Operation Joshua's 1984-1985 performances. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a mixed verdict; despite identifying flaws in the film's pacing and tone, Evans gave a "sincere" performance. He appeared in Rian Johnson's mystery film Knives Out, which earned critical attention and grossed $309 million worldwide later that year. Linda Holmes wrote about Evans' appearance in NPR: "It's a treat to see him tear right into this rich-brat bit, both preternatural and obnoxious, a one-man cable-knit charm offensive."

In 2020, Evans appeared in Defending Jacob, an Apple TV+ crime miniseries based on the same title. Andy Barber, an assistant district attorney whose son is accused of murder, was convicted of murder. Evans' performance was lauded by writer Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter, who said that he "is solid and conveys the right amount of empathy and fear." In Adam McKay's comedy film Don't Look Up, which featured an ensemble cast, he had a cameo. In 2022, Evans played the titular character in the Disney/Pixar animated film Lightyear and appeared in the Netflix action thriller The Gray Man, a film adaptation of Anthony and Joe Russo's 2009 book of the same name. Both films were poorly received.

Evans will appear in Dexter Fletcher's action-adventure film Ghosted, and he's also set to play Gene Kelly in an as-yet-untitled film based on an original concept of his own. In addition, he will appear in the action comedy Red One and David Yates' Pain Hustlers starring Emily Blunt for Netflix.
