Elijah Jordan Wood (born January 28, 1981) is an American actor, voice actor, film director, and DJ.

In the Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), he portrayed Frodo Baggins. Wood made his film debut in 1989 with a small role in Back to the Future Part II.

He went on to become well-known as a child actor with appearances in Avalon (1990), Paradise (1991), Radio Flyer, Forever Young (both 1992), The Adventures of Huck Finn and The Good Son (both 1993).

As a youth, he appeared in films such as North, The War (1994), Flipper (1996), The Ice Storm (1997), Deep Impact, and The Faculty (both 1998).

Wood has appeared in a number of films, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Sin City, Green Street, Everything Is Illuminated (2015), and I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2016). Wood's voice includes the role of Mumble in Happy Feet (2006) and its sequel; the title character in 9 (2009); and Spyro in the Legend of Spyro video game trilogy (2006–2008).

He formed SpectreVision, a film production company that specializes in horror films like The Greasy Strangler and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night in 2010.

Early life

Wood was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the second of three children born to Debbie (née Krause) and Warren Wood, who operated a delicatessen together. He is of English, Danish, Irish, and German ancestry, and was raised Catholic. Zachariah is his older brother, and Hannah has a younger sister named Hannah. He began modeling and taking piano lessons in his hometown at age seven. He appeared in The Sound of Music and played the title character in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in elementary school. He appeared as a choirboy in a version of See How They Run. In 1989, his parents sold their delicatessen, and the family, without his father, moved to Los Angeles in order for Wood to pursue an acting career. When he was 15, his parents divorced.

Personal life

Wood has a tattoo of the number nine in the Sindarin script, as well as in the English language (rather than Quenya) below his waist on the right side of the body. It refers to his character as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. All of the other characters of "The Fellowship" got the same tattoo, with the exception of John Rhys-Davies, whose stunt double received the tattoo instead.

Wood was ranked No. 1 in May 2006 when it was first introduced. 7 on Autograph Collector Magazine's list of the "Top Hollywood Autograph Signers."

Wood visited Curepto, Chile, one of the worst affected by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on February 27, 2010. He made personal visits to several of the victims and was joined by Cecilia Morel, the First Lady of Chile.

During the 2016 presidential race, Wood was a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders.

Career

Wood was inspired and appeared in local shops. In Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl," directed by David Fincher, he got his first glimpse in the music video. This was followed by a pivotal role in the made-for-TV film Child in the Night, as well as a minor role in Back to the Future Part II. Wood, nine years old, auditioned for a role in Kindergarten Cop, but director Ivan Reitman told him that his appearance was not credible, and that "a cruel thing to say to a nine-year-old" later. Wood's son, playing Aidan Quinn, attracted acclaim; the film was nominated for four Academy Awards; and it was nominated for four Academy Awards. In Paradise (1991), Richard Gere's Internal Affairs included a small part. Wood co-starred with Mel Gibson and Jamie Lee Curtis in Forever Young in 1992, and Joseph Mazzello in Radio Flyer.

Wood appeared in Disney's adaptation of Mark Twain's book The Adventures of Huck Finn in 1993, and he co-starred with Macaulay Culkin in the psychological thriller The Good Son. He appeared in The War alongside Kevin Costner the following year. Wood's review by Roger Ebert praised the film as "the most talented actor in his age group in Hollywood history," Wood said.

Wood's title role, opposite Bruce Willis in Robert Reiner's North (1994), was followed by a Super Bowl commercial for Lay's "Wavy" potato chips (with Dan Quayle). Wood appeared in The Cranberries' "British Thoughts" music video in 1995, was the lead actor in Flipper, and he co-starred in Ang Lee's critically acclaimed The Ice Storm. In 1997, Wood played Jack "The Artful Dodger" Dawkins in a made-for-TV adaptation of Oliver Twist, as well as Richard Dreyfuss. He continued to play a key role in the sci-fi disaster film Deep Impact and in Robert Rodriguez's scripted The Faculty. In 1999, Wood played a suburban white teenager in James Toback's Black and White and a junior hitman in Chain of Fools.

Wood appeared in Frodo Baggins' 2001 The Lord of the Rings, the first instalment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of J. R. Tolkien's multi-volume book, and he was the first actor to be cast. Wood received top billing, alongside a cast featuring Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Miranda Otto, Sean Bean, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, and John Rhys-Davies. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot in New Zealand by a single photographer for principal photography alone, with pick-up shots every four years for the next four years. Jackson gave Wood two gifts: one of the One Ring props used on the set and Frodo's sword. He was also given two prosthetic "hobbit feet" of the sort used during filming.

In 2002, Wood contributed to the DTV production of The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Peter Jackson's second part of his trilogy, was announced later this year. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Wood's first appearance after his Lord of the Rings triumph was in Eternal Sunshine, an unscrupulous lab technician who loves Kate Winslet. In 2005, the film was nominated for Best Original Screenplay by the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay. Kevin, Frank Miller's sequel to Frank Miller's comedic book film version Sin City (2005), was his next appearance. Wood hosted MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed is the successor to Wood's production of the Xbox 360 games console, which was announced on May 12, 2005.

Wood starred as a young Jewish-American man on a mission to locate the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in Everything Is Illuminated (2005). It was based on Jonathan Safran Foer's novel of the same name. He appeared in Green Street (also 2005) as an American college student who joins a violent British football team. Both had limited availability, but were highly praised.

Wood shot a small part of the comédie de t'aime (2006) film, which each have 18 five-minute sections and were directed by a different director. Vincenzo Natali was in charge of Wood's section, "Quartier de la Madeleine." The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Wood played Mumble, a penguin who can tap dance but not sing in George Miller's animated film Happy Feet (2006). Happy Feet earned over $380 million worldwide and was nominated for Best Animated Film and Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards. Wood reprised his role in Happi Feet Two (2011), the film's sequel.

He appeared in 2006 as part of Emilio Estevez's drama Bobby, a fictionalized account of the hours leading up to the US gun shooting on June 5, 1968. Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Wood marries Lindsay Lohan's character in order to prevent being drafted for the Vietnam War. Bobby was chosen in a competition at the Venice Film Festival. Wood has excelled at producing and acting, and he has established himself as a well-known disc jockey. Wooden Wisdom was founded by David Cowie and his colleague Zach Cowie and they have toured around the world. They have performed at the Bushmills Live 2012 festival at the Old Bushmills Distillery, the opening of the Brickell City Centre, and the pre-Emmy party at The London West Hollywood Hotel.

Wood has agreed to co-produce and also appear in Indalo Productions' Black Wings Has My Angel, based on Anthony Moody and Rob Malkani's noir book of the same name. Wood, along Tom Hiddleston and Anna Paquin, was supposed to start shooting in late 2012, but the film was delayed.

Wood, alongside Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller, formed The Woodshed, a production company that supports horror films. SpectreVision was rebranded by the company in 2013 as SpectreVision.
