Sidharth Malhotra Career

Career

Malhotra appeared in the television series Dharti Ka Veer Yathviraj Chauhan in 2009, in which he appeared in a small role of Jaichand. He successfully auditioned for a film directed by Anubhav Sinha, and was keen on furthering in acting. However, the film was shelved due to his work as an assistant director to Karan Johar on the 2010 film My Name Is Khan. He made his acting debut with Johar's teen drama Student of the Year in 2012, alongside co-debutantes Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. He was cast as Abhimanyu Singh, a scholarship student with limited financial resources who competes with his wealthy best friend Rohan Nanda (Dhawan) to win an annual school championship. Rajeev Masand, a film critic, of CNN-IBN, thought his appearance to be "earnest," adding that he had "a pleasing presence." Year of the Year was a financial success, with grossing 1.09 billion (US$14 million) around the world.

Malhotra appeared opposite Parineeti Sharma and Adah Sharma in the 2014 romantic comedy Hasee Toh Phasee, which tells the story of a scientist and an under-confident young businessman after a year absence from the screen, which was similar to co-stars Bhatt and Dhawan's second appearances after him. Mohar Basu of Koimoi found his performance to be "restrained" and "heartfelt," according to NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee, who likened his screen presence to Amitabh Bachchan's early work. The film did moderately well at the box office, with global sales of 620 million (US$7.8 million).

Ek Villain, the Mohit Suri-directed romantic drama in which a hardened criminal whose terminally ill wife Aisha Verma (Shraddha Kapoor) is assassinated by serial killer Rakesh Mahadkar, was Malhotra's second release of the year (Riteish Deshmukh). Even if he has a difficult time doing harm, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express described his performance as "watchable" — he's just so friendly and wholesome all the time, even when he's crunching bones. With worldwide sales of over 1.7 billion (US$21 million), the film became a commercial hit. He was named as one of the youngest generation of actors of Hindi Cinema after his success at the box office.

Malhotra appeared in a 2015 version of the 2011 American film Warrior, directed by Karan Malhotra and co-starring Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Jackie Shroff. At the box office, the film received critical feedback and fell short of expectations, but Malhotra's and his chemistry with co-star Akshay Kumar were praised for the film's success.

Kapoor & Sons' next launch, the Shakun Batra-directed family drama, was a critical and commercial success, grossing 1.53 billion worldwide. The film stars Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Fawad Khan, and Alia Bhatt, and Alia Bhatt portrays two brothers of contradictory characters (Malhotra and Khan) who return home to their dysfunctional family after their grandfather suffers from a cardiac arrest. Malhotra was overshadowed by Khan in the film, according to a reviewer for India Today, but Namrata Joshi of The Hindu said that "he has his own with his radiant presence and vulnerable gazes."

Malhotra continued to excel with a leading role in Baar Baar Dekho, as a mathematician who travels in time. The film was produced by Karan Johar under the banner of Excel Entertainment, and Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. The film, directed by Nitya Mehra, received mixed to critical feedback from the critics and flopped at the box office. He appeared in dual roles in A Gentleman, a comedy comedy starring Jacqueline Fernandez from the writer-director duo A Gentleman, which was released by Fox Star Studios and opened on August 25, 2017. Despite being a huge success, it opened to a cold reception. Both the films failed at the box office.

The film Ittefaq, a 1969 mystery film starring Abhay Chopra, starred Malhotra opposite Sonakshi Sinha. The film was released on 3 November 2017 with a 90 percent approval rating based on 5 reviews, but it failed at the box office with a lifetime collection of 500 million.

Neeraj Pandey's Aiyaary, which was released on February 16, 2018, featured Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee, and Rakul Preet Singh. The film started on a note of 30 million and collected 183.1 million, finally establishing as a modest success. "Aiyaary falls short of the mark on the whole, and is a lengthy wait," Malhotra's two new releases of 2019 were poorly received by critics and audiences alike, and were described as box office failures. He appeared in Jabariya Jodi, his second collaboration with Parineeti. The film, which was released on September 9, 2019, received critical feedback and was deemed a flop. His second appearance in Milap Milan Zaveri's masala actioner Marjaavaan, co-starring Tara Sutaria, Rakul Preet Singh, and Riteish Deshmukh, which was released on November 15, 2019.

Malhotra appeared in Shershaah, a biographical-action film based on the life of the Indian army officer Param Vir Chakra (PVC) Vikram Batra in 2021. The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on August 2021 after several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics gave it mixed praise. However, praise for Malhotra's success in particular had been directed. At the time of its launch, Shershaah was India's most watched Indian film.

Mission Majnu and Thank God starring Ajay Devgn are two of Malhotra's forthcoming films. Yodha, the Yodha of Dharma Productions, is currently shooting for Dharma Productions. Malhotra will appear in Indian Police Force, a web series directed by Rohit Shetty, which will also be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.
