Poonam Dhillon (born 18 April 1962) is an Indian Hindi-language film, theatre, and television actress and politician.

Femina Miss India (1977), a former Femina Miss India (1977).

She is best known for her 1979 film Noorie and with her six films with Rajesh Khanna; Red Rose, Dard, Nishaan, Awam (from 1980 to 1987) and Jai Shiv Shankar (1990).

Sohni Mahiwal (1983), Teri Meherbaniyan (1985), Karma (1986), Maalamaal (1988), etc. are her other famous films. Dhillon appeared in Bigg Boss in 2009 and was seen as Sharda Modi in the Sony TV series Ekk Nayi Pehchaan in 2013. She has worked with theater, beginning with award-winning "The perfect Husband" and now performing "The Perfect Wife," which has 20+ shows in Usa, Dubai, etc.

Personal life

Dhillon was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on April 18, 1962. Amreek Singh, her father, was an aeronautical engineer in the Indian Air Force, and she would often be transferred. Her mother was a school principal, and both her siblings are doctors. Poonam grew up and aspired to be a doctor. Poonam went to Carmel Convent in [Chandigarh] for schooling and then completed her education after being a part of films at the age 16.

She was pursuing an MBA in International Business in 2013. Dhillon was married to producer Ashok Thakeria and has two children, a daughter Paloma, and a son Anmol.

That was the first time Dhillon came to fame when she was named Miss Young India 1978 at the age of 16.

Yash Chopra noticed her and offered her a role in the film Trishul (1978), where her song "Gapoochi Gum Gum" with Sachin Pilgaonkar became very popular. Chopra made her debut in Noorie (1979) opposite Farooq Shaikh, which she also produced. The low budget film Noorie shot in Bhaderwah, Kashmir, became a huge success at the box office, partially due to Khayyam's music. Poonam was nominated for the Best Actress award in this film.

Subsequently, she went on to appear in around 90 films in Hindi, including Sohni Mahiwal, Red Rose, Teri Kasam, Dard, Nishana, Yeh Vainta Raha, Samunder, Romance, Kasam, and Sitamgar. In six films, Dard, Nishaan, Zamana, Awam, Red Rose (1980 film) and Jai Shankar were paired with Rajesh Khanna. When Juhi Chawla had to drop out, she made a special appearance in Judaai as a favour to producer Boney Kapoor.

She has appeared in regional films including Nyay Danda (Bengali), Yuddha Kaanda (Kannada), Ishtam (Telugu), and Yavarum Nalam (Tamil), 13B: Fear Has a New Address (Hindi).

In 2009, Dhillon appeared on Colors TV as a contestant on Season 3 of Bigg Boss. On the program, she came in second as the second runner-up. Her best role on Indian television, as the uneducated yet ideal wife of a wealthy businessman, was with Ekk Nayi Pehchaan on Sony TV in 2013.

She has appeared in The Perfect Husband, a Hindi theater performance that won the best comedy play award in 2005 and concluded a Golden jubilee run. Sooraj Thapar and Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi Kabhi co-starring Asif Sheikh followed her in another role in "The Perfect Wife." She has also been seen in a play called U Turn, which is the Hindi version of a Marathi play.

Dhillon ventured into make-up vans, pioneering the technique in India's film industry. "Vanity" is the owner of a make-up van company.
