Shaikh began her career as a child artist in Chachi, Ch. 420 and One 2 Ka 4. She appeared in Zoya's Indian drama film Tahaan, which received "The German Star of India award" at "Bollywood and Beyond" festival in Stuttgart, Germany, in 2009.
Shaikh was chosen for Nitesh Tiwari's biographical sports film Dangal, along with Sanya Malhotra, who had never performed before. Geeta Phogat was selected by Shaikh to be its Geeta Phogat. She watched several wrestling videos to learn "how wrestlers move, walk, and their body language" in order to prepare for her role. Both Malhotra and Sheikh completed five rounds of auditions, physical preparation, and workshops with Tiwari and Aamir Khan. They were trained by coach and former wrestler Kripa Shankar Patel Bishnoi. Dangal was released in 2016 and became India's highest-grossing film ever, grossing more than 2,000 crore (US$250 million) globally.
In the epic action-adventure film Thugs of Hindostan, Zafira Baig, a warrior-archer Thug, appeared. Shaikh will be seen in a Hindi remake of Tamil film Aruvi. Applause Entertainment is releasing a Hindi version. In an untitled 2022 Sam Manekshaw biography film directed by Meghna Gulzar, Fatima Gandhi will be seen as Indira Gandhi, Vicky Kaushal, and Sanya Malhotra.
