Born in Westminster and brought up in Maida Vale, Ridley, Ridley trained in drama at the Tring Park School of the Performing Arts.

Making her debut in the independent horror film Scrawl (2015), she began acting on television and in short films. Ridley rose to international prominence as the lead role of Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and Rise of Skywalker (2019).

She has appeared in the mystery film Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and lended her voice to the animated Peter Rabbit (2018).

Early life

Daisy Jazz Isobel Ridley was born in Westminster, London, on April 10th, 1992, and she grew up in Maida Vale. Louise is the youngest of three daughters born to Christopher Ridley, a photographer, and Louise Fawkner-Corbett, a bank communications specialist. Kika Rose and Poppy Sophia, as well as two older half-sisters, are among her older sisters. The Fawkner-Corbetts, her mother's relatives, were landed gentry with a military and medical history. Arnold Ridley, her paternal great-uncle, served in the military as well. He began his career as a playwright and actor (and is best remembered for playing Private Godfrey in the sitcom Dad's Army). John Harry Dunn Ridley, OBE, Arnold Ridley's uncle, Daisy's grandfather, was the head of the Engineering Secretariat at the BBC from 1950 to 1965.

When growing up, Ridley said that Matilda (1996), referring to the titular character (played by Mara Wilson) as a role model. Although she was not a huge Star Wars enthusiast as a child, she avidly followed the Harry Potter series.

Ridley received a scholarship to Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire, where she attended from age nine to eighteen. She then concentrated on her acting career before deciding on classical civilisation at Birkbeck, University of London. Ridley spent almost two years as a bartender at two separate pubs in London before being cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She began studying for a Bachelor of Arts in social science through online courses at the Open University in 2016.

Personal life

Ridley lives in Primrose Hill, London. Since 2017, she has been in a relationship with actor Tom Bateman, who appeared on the set of Murder on the Orient Express.

Ridley revealed she had been diagnosed with endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome at age 15, necessitating her to have multiple laparoscopic surgery procedures. She claims that her acne left her feeling low in self-confidence as a result of her acne. Ridley is a vegan.

Ridley sent an anti-gun violence message on both Instagram and Facebook following the 2016 Teen Choice Awards, which paid tribute to victims of gun violence. The public reacted angrily to Ridley's public retaliation in her Star Wars films, with critics accusing her of hypocrisy in relation to the violence depicted in her Star Wars films. She deleted her social media pages as a result, but briefly returned to Instagram, claiming that the reason for the demotion was because she had "a tumultuous few months ahead [and] so needed less distractions." She reiterated this position in 2017, saying that social media is "highly harmful for people's mental stability," including hers. Ridley expanded on the topic in a recent interview, promising never to return to social media.

Career

Ridley began her career with minor roles in Youngers, Toast of London, Silent Witness, Mr Selfridge, and Casualty. She appeared in the short film Blue Season, which was part of the Sci-Fi-London 48-Hour Film Challenge. In film three of Lifesaver, an interactive film that was nominated for a BAFTA Award, Ridley played the lead. Kim also appeared in a Wiley's song "Lights On" music video, portraying Kim. In the final cut, Ridley made her film debut in the British independent horror film Scrawl, 2015.

The casting of Ridley as Rey, one of the main characters in The Force Awakens, was announced in April 2014. In February 2014, she was cast in the film for the first time. She was, at the time of her casting, a "complete unknown," according to Rolling Stone. Director J. Abrams' selection was seen as a follow-up to George Lucas' decision to cast relatively unknown actors for lead roles in the first Star Wars film in 1977.

Ridley began filming her scenes in May 2014 at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, and before the film's debut in December 2015, she appeared on a stamp with the droid BB-8. The Force Awakens was a major box-office hit and the highest-grossing film of 2015. Her appearance received critical acclaim, with Richard Roeper describing her role as "a breakthrough figure" and adding, "[Harrison] Ford has a chemistry [shared] with Ridley and [John] Boyega] [shared].

Ridley, the executive producer of the documentary The Eagle Huntress, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016; she also performed narration for the film's wide release. Ridley was one of many actors on Barbra Streisand's 2016 album Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway. The song "At the Ballet" from A Chorus Line stars Anne Hathaway, Ridley, and Stévie Stront, one of a trio of dancers aspiring to be cast in a forthcoming performance.

Ridley appeared in Ophelia, a reimagining of the Hamlet story, alongside Naomi Watts and Clive Owen in January 2018. The film was shot from April to July 2017 and premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. In February 2018, Ridley narrated the role of Cottontail in Peter Rabbit, an adaptation of the children's tales of the same name by Beatrix Potter.

Rey appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the last film in the sequel trilogy, in December 2019. She is not expected to reprise her role after this film, and is quoted as saying, "I don't think anything could top [The Rise of Skywalker] for this role." However, she does show an interest in returning as the character if necessary, saying, "[...] never say never." I'm always looking forward to a return visit. But also the amazing thing is that it's within this vast, wide universe with all of these tales that have yet to be told. I believe there are a lot of fun stuff to make before any potential revisitation." She also saw some truth in her co-star Boyega's assertion that she would be jealous if future films were made with someone else playing Rey.

Ridley appeared in Chaos Walking, Patrick Ness' adaptation of the young-adult novel. Viola Eade was opposite Tom Holland, who played Todd Hewitt. On March 5, 2021, the film was released. Poor test screenings that followed the film's release were postponed occasionally, and later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It received critical feedback and was considered a box-office flop.

She contributed to the point-and-click mystery video game 12 Minutes, alongside James McAvoy and Willem Dafoe. The game received praise from critics, with Ridley's success lauded by analysts. Kate, a horny AI, made a surprise appearance in Judd Apatow's 2022 film The Bubble as Kate, a horny AI. The film received critical feedback.

On June 7, 2021, Ridley began filming The Marsh King's Daughter, a drama in Ontario, Canada. Filming wrapped on August 6, 2021. Mind Fall, a sci-fi thriller film starring Mathieu Kassovitz, is currently shooting a Young Woman and the Sea, a biopic of Disney+ in the role of Gertrude Ederle. Sometimes I Think About Dying, an indie film directed by Rachel Lambert in Astoria, Oregon, with Rebecca Lambert directing and Ridley also acting as a first-time main producer on the project. She will play a character in the French stop motion animated film The Inventor, which is due to be released in 2023.

It was announced in May 2022 that Ridley would appear in Magpie, a contemporary noir thriller written by her partner Tom Bateman, based on Ridley's original story plan and directed by Sam Yates. 55 Films' producers, Ridley, Bateman, and Kate Solomon star in Magpie's "Hitchcockian thriller that will take viewers on a true ride." In early 2023, filming in London will begin.
