Natalie Bassingthwaighte Career

Music career

Bassingthwaighte had considered a career in music for many years and had been a member of an R&B band but it didn't work out and her curiosity was focused on other options. By 2004, she had started working on her own demos: songs with an acoustic-rock sound, and later this year, she was hired as the lead singer for Australian electro-pop band Rogue Traders. The group, which began in 2002 with James Ash on keyboards and Steve Davis on guitars, had released a debut album before requesting a permanent singer. Bassingthwaighte auditioned for Ash and Davis after being introduced to the band's music. The pair had auditioned from 15 to 20, and after she performed their song "Voodoo Child," she became the band's front-woman.

The band released "Voo Child" as their fifth single, the first with Bassingwaight, and was rated platinum for shipments of 70,000 units in Australia in May 2005. "Voodoo Child" debuted at number seven on the New Zealand Singles Chart, number three on the UK Singles Chart, and number fifteen on the Irish Singles Chart, and fifth on the Irish Singles Chart. At the 2006 MTV Australia Awards, the single received the accolade for "Best Dance Video."

Also this month, Rogue Traders released their second studio album, Here Come the Drums, which debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart at number two and lasted seven weeks in the Top 50. It was awarded 4 stars and became the country's most popular record. "Breakthrough Artist – Album," "Best Selling Album," "Best Pop Release," and "Best Group" received four nominations at the ARIA Music Awards in 2006.

Bassingthwaighte was still a Rogue Trader member, but she made solo appearances and launches. In December 2006, she performed a duet with label mate Shannon Noll on their front page of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's "Don't Give Up" for the various artists' album Home: Songs of Hope & Journey. According to the ARIA Singles Chart, Noll and Bassingthwaighte's version ranked second. Bassingthwaighte and Noll teamed up again in 2007 for "Please Come Home for Christmas" on the album "The Spirit of Christmas 2007.

Rogue Traders' third album, Better in the Dark, which spawned the hit singles "Don't You Want A Feeling" and "I Never Liked You" in October 2007, and "What You Mean" was released in October 2007. The album debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart at number four and gained platinum status. Bassingthwaighte is listed as a co-composer for five of the album's twelve tracks, as well as all three singles. On February 20, 2009, the album debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart at number one and was certified gold.
