Jai Waetford (born 25 January 1999) is an Australian pop singer and songwriter who appeared third on the fifth season of The X Factor Australia.

He then signed with Sony Music Australia and released his debut single "Your Eyes," which debuted at number six on the ARIA Singles Chart.

Waetford's self-titled debut EP was released in December 2013 and debuted at number 21 on the ARIA Albums Chart in December 2013.

Waetford debuted as Angus Beaumont-Hannay in February 2016, his first episode aired on 2 May.

Heart Miles' latest EP was released on June 3, 2016.

Early life

Jai Waetford was born in 1999 and is from Campbelltown, a suburb in south-western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Alana Dow and his grandparents Hannah and Roger Dow raised him. Waetford's father and his mother were separated at an early age. From YouTube videos, he learned how to play guitar. After finishing Year 10 in Campbelltown Performing Arts High School and left school in 2014.

Waetford appeared on stage for the fifth season of The X Factor Australia in 2013, performing "Different Worlds" by Jes Hudak and an original song titled "Don't Let Me Go" from Jes Hudak and an original song titled "Don't Let Me Go." He made it to the super bootcamp stage of the tournament. Waetford performed "Titanium" by David Guetta on the first day of super bootcamp and advanced to Paulo Nutini's "Last Request" segment. Waetford performed "We Are Never Really Getting Back Together" by Taylor Swift to the judges and a large audience of one thousand on the final day of super bootcamp. He made it to the home visits round and was pushed into the Boys category, which was coached by Ronan Keating. He sang Elvis Presley's version of "Always on My Mind" during the home visits and made it to the live shows. Waetford advanced to the grand final by finishing third behind Taylor Henderson who came second and Dami Im who won the show.

Waetford signed a recording deal with Sony Music Australia after The X Factor ended Waetford. "Your Eyes," his debut single if he had won The X Factor, was released the same day. The song debuted at number six on the ARIA Singles Chart and was rated gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association for orders over 35,000 copies. Waetford toured with Third Degree, Taylor Henderson, Dami Im and Jiordan Tolli for The X Factor Live Tour, which ended on December 2, 2013. He unveiled his self-titled debut EP on December 6, 2013, peaking at number 21 on the ARIA Albums Chart. On March 28, 2014, Waetford's second EP, Get to Know You, was released. The ARIA Singles Chart peaked at number 32 and reached its peak. In April 2014 around Australia, Waetford was the supporting act for Justice Crew's #HypeTour. Shy, Waetford's third EP, featured six covers and one single.

In February 2016, he released the single "Live Not Dreaming" and the EP Heart Miles, which was released on June 3rd 2016. Both 'Life Not Dreaming' and 'Heart Miles' as well as a promotional video featuring Jai discussing a long-distance friendship containing snippets of each of his latest songs from his EP have been shot. In May and June 2016, Jai toured a variety of cities to promote his latest work in Europe, Indonesia, and Thailand, which included appearances of Drake's "One Dance" and Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself."

Waetford's first single in a year, "Lost in You," was released in October 2018. "I wrote 'Lost in You' about someone who captured me to a point where my entire life revolved around this individual," Waetford wrote. It was strange to me when I was writing this because I found myself involved in everything I did; I was living for someone else." In an interview with the Herald Sun, Waetford discussed his mental instability in the past, saying he "couldn't find happiness in anything."

Waetford was approached by the Australian Suicide Prevention Foundation in August to be an ambassador for their You Are Not Alone campaign after revealing his mental illness in a candid social media post.

"Get Over" and "Mates," Waetford's first singles, debuted with urban music store Complex. Waetford and James Agnus co-wrote "Mates" (Carmouflage Rose, Tigerilla, Tkay Maidza), who also wrote the book. "James and I were trying to find a sound that mashed urban drums with pop instrumentation and vocal melody," Jai says of the collaboration. "We then discovered this beat and ran with it, and ended up really digging the result." It's all about the online world and the real world colliding. Often we say things online that we wouldn't say in real life, and 'Mates' refers to a situation in which that happened to me."
