Maria Elena Vidal (born August 1, 1960) is an American singer-songwriter.

She is best known for her hit single "Body Rock," which debuted on the US Dance Charts at #48 on the Hot 100, and #11 in the United Kingdom, and charted on international charts.

In 1984, it was the theme song to the film Body Rock.

The song is regarded as a dance masterpiece.

Early life

Vidal was born to parents of Hispanic origins. Desmond Child and the two of them began writing songs and beginning to perform. Despite these, she worked at a diner for extra money. Gina was given the nickname by the diner's owner and manager due to her slight physical appearance to actress and photographer Gina Lollobrigida, as well as the restaurant's owner and boss.

Vidal was a founding member of the Desmond Child & Rouge, a New York City-based band. In 1979 and 1980 for Capitol Records, they released two well-received albums. They toured the country and performed on Saturday Night Live, where they were the musical guests. "Our Love is Insane" was their own special blend of rock and disco. The band was known for their appearance on the soundtrack to The Warriors in 1979, with the song "Last of an Ancient Breed."

Vidal, a member of Rouge alongside Diana Grasselli and Myriam Valle, was asked by Paul Shaffer (the band's keyboardist), to perform on a live comedy album that he was on for Gilda Radner. When making the album, Radner and producer Lorne Michaels decided to make it into a Broadway show instead: Gilda Radner – Live From New York opened at the Winter Garden Theater in 1979. On stage, Rouge performed as both musicians and as a variety of characters. They toured Boston and Chicago, where they were made into the film Gilda Live directed by Mike Nichols.

She first solo effort when the band parted ways was an album with EMI, where she collaborated with producer John "Jellybean" Benitez. She was asked to perform the theme song for the 1984 film Body Rock, which was produced by Phil Ramone while recording the album. It became a worldwide phenomenon, with the highest ranking at number one. 26 in Australia. Vidal went around the world to promote it.

She appeared in the 1985 horror comedy film Once Bitten as a member of a high school band and performed two songs on the Once Bitten soundtrack.

After hearing her demo of "Do Me Right," which had been written and produced for her by Desmond, Jimmy Iovine signed Vidal as a solo artist to A&M Records. It was the first single off her 1987 self-titled debut solo album, particularly in South America. David Fincher produced the music video.

"Obsession" was she sang a duet with Desmond Child on the Burt Bacharach/Desmond Child's written power ballad. Vidal was making her third solo album with British-owned Charisma Records at the time, but the album was never released.

Vidal has performed with many other artists' songs as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer.

Vidal contributed backup vocals to Kiss' Paul Stanley's solo album "I Can't Wait" as well as a few other tracks from Nick's solo album "Rock a Little" and was a featured vocalist for The Smithereens' single "A Girl Like You." Belinda Carlisle's solo albums, including the 1989 album "Runaway Horses," appear on several of her Belinda Carlisle's albums, including the 1989 version "Runaway Horses." Other highlights include vocals for musicians including Ellen Foley, Aerosmith, Seal, Alice Cooper, Celine Dion, Toto, Bette Midler, Real McCoy, and Cher.
