Alaska Life

Mara Olvido Gara Jova (born June 13, 1963) better known as Alaska is a Spanish-Mexican singer, DJ, and television personality well-known in Spain and Latin America.

She was one of the founding members of La Movida Madrilea, the cultural and artistic movement that arose after Francoist Spain's dissolution.

This movement, in which music, theatre, cinema, and fashion all united, was a demonstration of what Spain had been like under Franco.

She has been active in many music companies since the 1970s: Kaka de Luxe 1977, Alaska y los Pegamoides 1980, Alaska y Dinarama 1983, and Fangoria, a Spanish electropop band.

Alaska continues to thrive today, and has established itself as a pillar of 1980s Spain.

Alaska Career

Life and career

Alaska was born in Mexico City on June 13, 1963. Her father, a native of Asturias, Spain, was in Mexico exile from Fidel Castro during the Spanish Civil War, as well as her Cuban mother, who was still living in Mexico. Her parents migrated to Spain in 1973, two years before caudillo Francisco Franco died, settling in Madrid.

Alaska was a big fan of musicians such as Lou Reed and T-Rex, but David Bowie had the most influence. She even told her mother that she would like to be a boy just so he could be gay.

She collaborated with Bazofia, a fanzine, who used the pen name Alaska. (All her friends call her Alaska, so cold in Alaska) She was inspired by Reed's lyrics "Caroline Says II."

Punk's birth had a huge influence on the young Alaska natives, who later formed a band. She travelled to El Rastro, Madrid's most popular flea market, looking for band members, where she met Nacho Canut and Carlos Berlanga.

Alaska, along with Fernando Márquez, Nacho Canut, Carlos Berlanga, and Enrique Sierra, among other things, formed the band Kaka de Luxe, one of the first Spanish punk rock bands, where she appeared on rhythm guitar. Gara, Canut, Berlanga, Ana Curra, and Eduardo Benavente formed the band Alaska y los Pegamoides in 1979. Alaska was lead singer for the first time with the group "Pegamoides" from P. They adopted the name in honor of one of the bands they adored: Siouxsie and the Banshees. Carlos Berlanga left "Pegamoides" and joined Nacho Canut in "Dinarama" due to some artistic inconsistencies. Eduardo Benavente and Ana Curra were among the first goth bands in Spain at this time. "Pegamoides" broke up a few months after Carlos Berlanga left the band. Alaska performed "Dinarama" in 1982, and the band's first album, Canciones Profanas, was released in 1983 under the name Dinarama+ Alaska. The band opted to use the term "Alaska y Dinarama" on their upcoming album, Deseo carnal, and they kept the name until 1989. Carlos Berlanga left "Alaska y Dinarama" in 1989 during the band's last album Fan Fatal, where all songs are dedicated to the bands they adored and admired over the years: Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode, Parális Permanente, and others.

When "Alaska y Dinarama" ends, Nacho Canut and Alaska, as "Fangoria," call themselves "Fangoria." In the style of Pet Shop Boys, they changed their music style to electronic pop. They released Salto Mortal, their first album since forming "Pegamoides." After that, they left the company and began a trilogy of independent companies: Un d'a cualquiera en Vulcano I, Un d'a cualquiera en Vulcano II and Un d'a cualquiera in Vulcano III. They didn't appear at many concerts. During this period, Alaska became a symbol of the LGBT community and became very involved in favor of Madrid Gay Pride.

Subterfuge, a significant indie company, has announced Fangoria's newest album, Una Temporada en el Infierno, which is regarded by some as a masterpiece of electronic music. After releasing a lot of CDs, Fangoria's band became very popular. Fangoria was an amazing electronic band, and Alaska was a superb performer on another album with Subterfuge, Naturaleza muerta. Fangoria had to abandon its current recording name due to some creative differences with Subterfuge. In 2004, DRO (Warner) released their next album, Arquitectura Efmera.

Alaska appeared on Televisión Espaola in the late 1980s as the host of a Spanish children's show La Bola de Cristal, which was located in the United States.

Fangoria traveled to Mexico in 2006 to promote their latest album El Extra Viaje. Alaska appeared on two sketches of Telehit's Desde Gayola (a Mexican parody display). In the first sketch, she appeared as herself in an interview with Tesorito, the actress played Galaxia (a DJ) with Supermana, Chef Ornica & Manigüis.

Since 2011, she appeared in the MTV Spain reality show Alaska y Mario with her partner/manager Mario Vaquerizo.
