Early life
Rivera was born in Long Beach, California to Rosa Saavedra and Pedro Rivera. Prior to Lupillo being born, Pedro Jr., Gustavo, his mother and his father moved to Long Beach, California, where Lupillo graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1990.
Career
Rivera aspired to be a restaurateur first. Pedro Rivera's father, on the other hand, was a recording label/studio operator (Cintas Acuario). When a contracted singer failed to turn up for a recording session, Rivera recruited his son Lupillo to work at the studio, wanting to give him a hands-on business experience.
Lupillo was given the challenge of looking for local talent in jail, with the understanding that some of the talent could be recruited by his father's business. Lupillo Rivera was nicknamed "El Torito" when he first began to sing. He was more popular when he became more popular, "El Toro del Correo."
