Simbiatu 'Simbi' Abiola Abiola Ajikawo (born 23 February 1994), also known by her stage name Little Simz, is a British rapper, singer, and actress.
Following the introduction of four mixtapes and five EPs, she debuted her debut album A Curious Tale of Trials + People on September 18, 2015, via her independent label, Age: 101 Music.
The album debuted at number 20 on the UK R&B Albums Chart and at number 43 on the UK Independent Albums Chart.
Stillness, her second studio album, was released in Wonderland in 2016.
Grey Area, her third studio album, was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2019.
Early life
Ajikawo was born in London's Islington, Nigerian parents. She and two older sisters were raised on a community estate. During her childhood, her mother was also a foster carer. She is ethnically Yoruba.
She attended Highbury Fields School in London and then went on to attend St Mary's Youth Club in Upper Street, Islington, where pop stars Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke also attended. Ajikawo has attributed Mary's Youth Club influence on her career, describing it as "the place where it all began for me... a second home."
Ajikawo later attended Westminster Kingsway College and The University of West London, where she pursued her music education from there.
Personal life
Ajikawo lives in London. Letitia Wright, a childhood friend, and actor Fady Elsayed. Ajikawo and Wright have been good friends, and Ajikawo photographed Wright for her single, "Selfish" in 2019. Although Ajikawo believes in God, she does not now adhere to any faith.
Model Harry Uzoka was assassinated in 2018 in New York, prompting her to write her song "Wounds."
Career
Simz' acting career began in 2010 with Vicky of the BBC children's film Spirit Warriors, first broadcast in 2010, and as Meleka in the E4 television series Youngers. Shelley appeared in Netflix's revival and third season of Top Boy, which premiered in fall 2019. She appeared in Venom - Let There Be Carnage, a Sony/Marvel film, singing her song Venom in a nightclub.
She describes her music as rap and experimental. Despite being closely associated with the grime genre, she has also taken inspiration from other genres, such as reggae, blues, synth-rock, and jazzy R&B.
Simz has appeared at Rising Tide, iluvlive, and Industry Takeover (Urban Growth) Hackney Empire, Somerset House, and the House of Lords. Jules Buckley led a complete orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC 1Xtra Prom 2015. Simz can be seen on the Leave to Remain film soundtrack, performing "Leave It As That" as the lead. She launched her second studio album, Stillness in Wonderland, on December 16, 2016. It was inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and bolstered by a comic book, art display, and festival. She appeared on Gorillaz' opening act on their Humanz Tour in 2017 and was the vocalist on their album Humanz's Super Deluxe Edition.
Simz's music is released on her own Age 101 Music record label with a unique distribution licencing contract with AWAL Recordings. Simz and her partner AGE 101 signed a worldwide deal with AWAL Recordings on September 6, 2018, after AWAL had released her debut album "A Curious Tale of Trials + People" in 2015. The deal was renewed on June 18, 2020.
Grey Area's 2019 studio album Grey Area was released with critical success and was nominated for the Mercury Prize and the European Independent Album of the Year Award (2019).
