Early life

Estelle Swaray was born and raised in Hammersmith, London, England. Her mother's family comes from Dakar, Senegal, and her father is from Sierra Leone. She was the second child in nine years to be born. When she was growing up, Estelle's parents were extremely religious, and secular music was not allowed in the family's house. Instead, Estelle grew up listening to spiritual music, especially American gospel—and traditional African music. However, she will occasionally listen to hip hop when not at home.

She spent her youth listening to her parents' reggae records and aunt's soul collection before discovering hip hop. "I jumped into hip hop from my uncle; he was always playing with Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane; he was a bad boy, and my mother wasn't thrilled that I was hanging out with him." Career

Estelle got her start in London's renowned hip-hop record store Deal Real. Her coworkers encouraged her to try out on stage and appear on television; she soon found herself on many London clubs and performing with the likes of Manuva and Rodney P.
